Lyrics
Underneath this canopy of snow
Where fifty-seven winters
Took their toll
Where did you go?
And I believed in you
I believed in you
Like Elvis Presley
Singing psalms on a Sunday
(Where did you go?)
Well she's gone to meet her maker
Back to where she came from
Come to save her soul...
Come to save her soul...
Come to take her home
'Cause it's late and past
Your bedtime
Well past bedtime
Angel
My angel
Fly over me
Angel...
She took her life
Within her hands
She took her life
Within her own two hands
And no-one can tell her
What to do now
And I believed in you
I believed in you
Like Elvis Presley
Singin live from Las Vegas
(Where did you go?)
Well she's gone to meet
Her maker
Back to where she came from
Come to save her soul... - Hudba
My mother committed suicide just before her 58th birthday. I found this song and couldn't believe the way it resonated with me. She loved Elvis. Annie is speaking to me directly, I'm certain of it.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope she found peace.
Amazing.
Your mum is with her soul family. She is safe. I'm sorry you've had to go through this. I send you so much love. I'm happy that this song brings you some comfort 💗

@im not have another beer
Yes she had one of the greatest voices in her genre but she also had, it seems to me anyway, an ability to emote her songs that crossed over. You -feel- her songs. You feel them on her albums. You feel them in her videos. You felt them in her live shows I am told, especially in smaller venues. It's rare and not many have it or the ability to sustain it consistently. One of my top 3 female vocalists in her genre....maybe top 1 depending on my mood. Woman is totally amazing.
Watch the videos, she is a PERFORMER, hair, makeup, wardrobe, she tells a story, plays characters & has them interact & exchange from video to video.❤
One of the most emotive and grossly underrated Eurythmics tracks ever in my humble opinion. The song was inspired by an Aunt of Annie Lennox in Aberdeen who sadly took her own life in 1987.
Sadly, the video was never shown on MTV in America at the time because it was perceived as dealing with issues around the occult, and could cause "outrage in certain sections of American society". So much for 'the land of the free'!!!
Annie is a wonderful person, still has a home in Aberdeen where she was born, and has (personally) raised over £60 million over the years for various medical research and welfare charities around the world for people and animals in need. Good on ya Annie!
+Itzdat Managgen among my favorite of their songs--and they're my favorite musicians--so glad i was able to see live on their '89 tour. a friend committed suicide very shortly after this song came into my life, they became forever connected in my mind and heart, for which i'm grateful. it works. it helps.
i also got the vhs video compilation back in the day, and really resonated with this video.
+Stephen Velez I saw them live in '89 too! Maybe we met 26 years ago? ;-) It's weird how life has it's twists and turns, as a close friend of mine now plays keyboards for Annie when she goes out on tour. But yes, I find this track very comforting in many ways. Especially when you lose someone dear to you... which sadly happens more and more often as the years go by :-( Thanks for sharing your experience.
where did you see them in '89? i caught them in worcester, ma, at the good ole centrum!
+Stephen Velez I saw them at the very beginning of the tour at The Point in Dublin, then right towards the end of it at the NTC in Melbourne, Australia. Makes me sound like a massively dedicated fan but the truth is I was working for RCA Records at the time. I also saw Annie at the RFH in London back in 2011 when Dave came on with his guitar and did a couple of tracks with her at the end. Sounds cheesy but it was pretty emotional really.
There's always a cliched complaint about the US from a British poster. That whiny nonsense takes away from serious criticism.
(I'm not American).
My mother died in a car accident on September 19th, 1990 when I was 26....I heard the news from my younger brother who lived in the same city at the same time....it changed me completely....my life was never the same....i go on....i work....i love....i laugh....i cry....but im different.....this song made it all easier to deal with.....i still work and strive and play and laugh....thank you for making it make a little easier.
My mom died in April 2019. 💔 Please. Continue to live your life in a happy way. Moms would want us to be happy, not sad, grieving, miserable and crying all the time. Remember a mom would always want her children to be happy. 💐
Annie Lennox----one of the all-time best female vocalists in Rock! 💜
And most beautiful faces ever...(imo).
Eurythmics have a handful of underrated singles. This is one of them.
And one underrated album - Savage.
@@Mark-zu6oz My favorite album of theirs.
@@Cicilo1983 Mine as well, with Sweet Dreams a close second.
@@Mark-zu6oz It's odd, because although I loved Savage when it was released, I never would have predicted that it would become the one I'd keep returning to over the years. Yes, the Sweet Dreams album is really high on my list as well, probably tied in second place with Touch. But every album they made is amazing, really. You NEVER knew what to expect from a new Eurythmics album, which is one of the many reasons why they fascinated me.
Without knowing its background... This is their most beautiful song. We all dedicate it to a missing beloved one... That's almost sorcery. God bless Annie and Dave.
Lets meet someday. Brazil with love
@@nyllabrasileiro7044 I hope so... Best wishes
I love the way this video shows Dave rescuing Annie from harm.
Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox will soon be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. For real. And they just got inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. I love the music that they brought into my life.
So long overdue for both of these extraordinarily talented people.

Oi como você está sempre assisto você pode me falar Que músicas linda e maravilhosa
I have been on a Annie binge for a month now. That's crazy. Every one of the Eurythmics songs are catchy.
Should be in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
100% agreed. I think they'll get in within the next 5 years. With the Cars getting in in 2018 and Roxy Music and the Cure getting in in 2019, and if Depeche Mode can get in this year, that should clear the path for Eurythmics as well as other new wave groups.
I agree baby
Absolutely !!! One Of The Greatest Duos In Rock And Roll History !!!
In my humble opinion, one of THE greatest acts ever to grace this Earth.
I knew when I bought the Sweet Dreams album as a teen, and liked the album tracks even better than the hits, that this was an act for the ages.
Now (2022) they finally are!! 🙌
Her voice is out of this world. Moulding every song into a soothing miracle.
Not many people would write a song about someones that died Annie Lennox is such a strong person
There was a time when I, sadly, and nearly, ended the life I live in. The album, and this song came out at that time back then. It was like a wake up call in a way. It's been nearly 30 years of battling to survive, in which I shouldn't be, yet, here I am. Annie is truly an icon who has touched the world in ways most of us can only slightly imagine, yet, she is humble and fierce in her approach to the new, and her fight for the weak. And she will say "she's only a woman doing her best to do the right things". And Annie, AND Dave, too, continue on doing just that... though they part time to time for personal projects and life, they always reunite and they create. What a beautiful thing that is. Her voice, like a very few others I love, can paint a landscape of emotions that will remind you... You Are Alive! Peace.

Keep hanging on Tony, sometimes today is all we have and for most of us... it’s all we need ❤️
I had also a song few years ago, which were on the radio and that saved also my life. So i understand u very well and wish u all the best Tony ! Tc, God bless u and is always at ur side
Tony just take 1 breath at a time.
❤️
Thanks to be here. ♡
This is their most beautiful song.We all dedicate it to a missing beloved once❤
Annie will go down in music history as one of the greatest lyricists of all time.
My mother died when I was 57. Parenting me had to have been a nightmare, so I think of the “where 57 winters took their toll” line as reflecting that struggle. She was in so much pain near the end that morphine was her only relief, and the onset of a final comatose phase prompted those closest to her at the moment to quietly facilitate a fatal overdose. No one can tell her what to do now. I believed in her like Elvis Presley singing live from Las Vegas. Fly over me angel.
Congratulations to Annie and Dave of Eurythmics for their induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame earlier this year. There are cool pictures on-line.
Also, congratulations to Eurythmics for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Nov. 2022 which is soon now.
Well Derseved & Long Overdue!
I love Annie Lennox. What a voice & what an advocate for charities she's involved in. My respect & admiration always.
She's an alchemist, with her words and voice she turns suffering into beauty, reflection and comfort.
yup, she does that.
There are definitely people with unique soul system if you like, Annie is one of those high-spirited creatures of God!

Thank God for youtube - there are so many songs we would have forgotten without youtube to find and see them!
Reading the positive comments on this song and how it means different things to so many give testament to the power of music and art in general. So many people take a positive feeling from the performance and lyrics that goes beyond a simple listening of them. The ability to do this is truly a gift which people like the eurythmics share with us... and for which I for one am really grateful
Beautiful and sad song. One of my favorites from the Eurythmics.
A masterful power ballad. I love the two lines about Elvis. They almost make my cry everytime I hear this.
Beautiful bassline-beautiful song.
For My Beloved Mum, R.I.P.
Although this song was written about the suicide of a woman, when it came out, my father had just died and I was still in shock and these words haunted me and yet summed up everything that I was feeling for the loss of my wonderful dad. x There was really heavy fog during the week he passed away and a little blackbird flew lost and hit my front door so loudly that I opened the door. I wondered if it was him calling to tell me he was still around. My Angel, fly over me, my angel. Where did you go
I know your comment is 9yrs ago, I hope you are doing well. I lost my Dad 12yrs ago but my 21yr old sister was killed in a car crash overseas in 1990 when I was 13 and I would belt this out in my bedroom off her Revenge LP over and over. Must have driven my parents mad but they never said a word. This song resonated through my soul and I would ugly cry to it for years to come. I just made my 12yr old watch the music video with me after making him watch "Would I Lie To You" but he took off before I could make him listen to my other equal favourite to Angel, that is "I Remember You". I live all their music though. I only found this music video in the recent years.
This single is a masterpiece!
I Think this is one of their best.
Essa música é tão linda que chega a constranger sempre que a ouço. Annie Lennox é sinônimo de competência. Surreal. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Bellissima melodia, voce straordinaria. Vibrazioni che vanno dritto al cuore❤😊
One of the Best Songs from them. So underrated ! Still great in Dezember 2019 !
Annie, my sweet, sweet Annie Lennox, I cannot find the words to express the greatfullness that your music has given me, or how its such a huge part of why I am still alive. I'm not a religious man, but I believe in the gospel of music. All I can say is shit like this song, the music of The Eurythmics and several other bands, have saved my life. I'm not here to preach for or against orginised religion. I can only speak for myself. If you're out there and you are suffering from mental illness like me, let the music save you! I know it's all fucked up. But let the music save you!
Ethereal and mysterious yet calming and peaceful.......
just such a beautiful song.. it makes me feel sad.. a beautiful kind of sad.. so deep and meaningful.. this is true art
My wife passed away in February she was my angel miss her so much
No words to describe the feeling.
Under this canopy of snow..

That's where I'm at!!! Horrible feeling to feel as if you belong or needed anywhere. I can most definitely relate.
One of my favourite songs of all time. I still love it after all of these years. Annie looks beautiful too ! The whole album, We Too Are One is great from start to finish. I still play the whole album on a regular basis.
Tears streaming down my eyes ,wow what a song 😢 and I'm a guy ,what a voice
One of my favorite Eurythmics songs. One of many, for various reasons. Love Annie's vocals in this and her emotion, I can feel it in her voice. The video is also top notch. Although I'm still trying to decipher it.
this song makes me cry i think of my mother in a nursing home with all timers , love her
Amo a voz perfeita de Annie Lennox ❤️❤️❤️
Que época boa! Não sou dessa época mas vendo essa cantora cantando e a interpretação dos clipes são as melhores ,que voz!😍
I saw the "Revenge" tour at Radio City in NY, and she pulled this out as the encore. I was so blown away, it almost knocked me out of my seat. The whole concert was pure gold, but this was the crowning glory.
Anne is in the top ten of all time!
LOVE EURYTHMICS FOREVER ROCK AND ROLL.
As we approach the first Mother's Day after my mother' s death, she was dying of cancer and when the treatments became more difficult to take then the disease she stopped treatment -- thus taking her life within her own two hands/no one could tell her what to do. More than 57 winters took their toll on her (almost 80) and her canopy wasn't "snow" (more of a dark grey), but now she is gone I miss you mom, Fly over me.
The final scene was epic.
Moved my soul . I must say.
In December 1992 we sadly experienced a pain I would never wish on another human being when the baby girl (Nicola Jane) we expected in March 1993 was stillborn. Less than 12 months earlier I had lost my father unexpectedly. In my own way I relate the lyrics in this song to both events. Annie Lennox is a legend.
No me canso de oirla, que grandes!
30 junio 2023, sentimientos como la primera vez que escuché esta canción 😢
Loving you Larkins! Now and forever!
I love so much this song!
Wonderful song, beautiful voice, and a great video.
Love her short hair and her strong and peaceful voice of course.
Looks ugly to me.
She's an incredible woman. Love her much.

Read a quote where she said androgynous was a deflection from the sexism & chauvinism of her industry (she came out in Elvis drag 1st American television appearance, confusing John Denver).
how much i love this woman!!!!
Touches the heart...Just so lovely!
A masterpiece ! 🧝♀️
Masterpiece..
Beautiful song,love it!
I work nightshift for the meantime at a large retail store, this song has been in my head all night. Seriously, all night.

Annie's voice is haunting and addictive. don't listen to the others like "Love is a stranger", "Why", "You have placed a chill in my heart" and "Don't ask me why".
Happy Birthday, Annie! Love you!!!

beautiful song , we miss this kind of sound .thank you
it was a great band to me .
What a beautiful song full of strings song so beautfully by annie lennox
So glad Eurythmics had foresight to produce their videos on high-resolution film. If it had been done just on video, it would be low-resolution.
Awww, that made me cry. I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost my mom less than a year ago. {{{hugs}}}
She's so beautiful :)
There is also a version with a choir: amazing song!
Annie Lennox is wonderful! I love her... #Eurythmics
Esquisitely Superb ❤️❤️❤️
This song came out around the time my grandmother died.
Anyone who thinks Annie Lennox isn't the greatest female singer ever can go jump off a cliff. Simply stunning vocals here.
Beautiful song. 😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
She is the best. This song means a lot to me.
Dedicated to my beautiful sweet grandmother R.I.P. 12/27/16
this song reminds me of a friend of mine, a sister, who took her life. This is a beautiful song. very sad but beautiful
You look Elvis so much we loved Elvis so much and every single thing that talks about this thank you

Annie is a Legend 💞👌
That's music simple beautiful
Video e Música belíssimos, muito tocante.
Beautiful….
Beautiful song
I first heard the music and loved it and the lyrics. Then I saw the video directed by Sophie Muller and I got angry at her with all this fire (which looks real). The first part of the video is Muller beautiful then all this fire later. How dare Sophie Muller make Annie and Dave do these fire scenes? But later I come to like to see Dave rescue Annie from the flames and approve of the whole video. Kudos to Annie, Dave and Sophie to this fascinating music video.
What an unbelievable hit making machine the Eurythmics were back in the 80's. Annie Lennox is really a Soul Singer who become famous during the synthesizer pop era of the time. What a very emotive song Angel is......
New album every year, I'd buy the new 1 & say, "Well, it's not as good" & then do it all over again next year. 1 summer bought them, Aretha, Cyndi, Madge, Whitney, Tina. My sister's birthday is July & had NO idea what to get her, saw what was in my hands & went - "HERE!" When she died found Medusa disc in her glove box, listen to Annie covers every road trip, that woman should cover every song ever written!❤
Check her covers of American songbook standards on Nostalgia, she'll put a spell on you, as always.
This is for you Joe Larkins, 20 years ago you were stolen from me killed in a head on collision less than two hours after we made the most beautiful love planning out our lives together dreaming of our future wrapped in each others arms. I'm blessed to have shared your last days on earth. I'm still in love with Joe. You will always be my ANGEL
That is a powerful message Suzanne - a devastating loss and I admire your strength.. I have no doubt he has chosen to watch over you until you are together again..
