I think the Maori haka is a good example of why it's a shame there aren't any war themes this time around. Overall I do love the entire track though.

I agree that the earlier themes sound more 'authentic', and I generally prefer the medieval themes of all civs for that reason, but the Industrial themes are still very good. Even the miscellaneous themes are really nice. Certainly one of the best game soundtracks I've had the pleasure of enjoying.
The atomic era ones sound way too techno for me, I get it it’s supposed to sound modern but whenever i hit the atomic era usually the music slider gets turned down lol, like poundmaker, Zulu, and Māori have absolute jammers from ancient to industrial but the second they hit atomic I just lose interest lol
Ottoman theme is actually something they used to play in actual war so it makes sense that it makes you wanna go to war ^^
I'll be honest. Civ introduced me to lots of world genres that I may not have otherwise explored. My father has always listened to powwow but the Cree soundtrack in Civ is really what got me starting to appreciate and search for Northern style singing. Absolutely beautiful.
Edit: I found it interesting that you found the Atomic era version to be your second favorite version. I found the Industrial era version to be my favorite and the best balance of respect and fusion, as the composition kept both the singers and the drum(s) central and leading the composition, with the orchestra feeling more subordinate to the Poundmaker singers rather than vice versa, which seems to be the more typical outcome of songs in Western media that try to infuse indigenous elements into the music. For me, other than replacing the Cree drums with other percussion, I felt like all the additions created an atmosphere where it felt like there was more competition between the futuristic synth/reverb and the singers. That's just my two cents. I am proud of Geoff Knorr, Phill Boucher, Roland Rizzo, and the Civ team for the amount of effort they put in to make something respectful, genuine, and new.
Suleiman has probably my favorite set of music even though I still haven't touched him yet in my 100 hours into this game
it's honestly so good, every song is but once the middle part starts i get hyped
The only part that I disagree with is Hungary as it's my favorite song in the game mainly the renaissance era version of the song. Because I think it's very fitting of Hungarian culture and it sounds really nice.
The greatest thing about the poland theme is how it switches between a cultural and peaceful theme to a warlike march, signifying the struggles that poland went through from the industrial era onwards, while stille keeping its cultural heritage intact. Listening to it you can feel an army incoming, and how the cultural part of the piece fights back against it
My top (SSS):
5. Brazil both guitar themes (Branca and Tardes em Lindoia): just bring me nostalgia and happiness.
4. Cree (Medieval): at first I didn't like it so much, but, when the transition from the vocals into the drums hits, it's amazing.
3. Shaka: The contrast of being a war Civ with such a happy melody, make it so enjoyable to play with them.
2. Kupe: I just find myself humming and singing their theme pretty often, there's some form of calmness to it I love.
1. Russia Atomic Theme: That Russian theme is the reason I let any game drag enough just to listen to it, it's powerful.
As of the rest of the civs, all of them are S tier in my heart
Japan in C tier, Scotland in D tier, and Rome in F tier? Heresy!
I now take in to account how much I like a civs theme when I put them on my map. It makes a huge difference in my aggravation level.
Actually the music of China is based on a well-known Chinese song in the early 1700s, the song name is called 茉莉花 (Mo Li Hua), in English it means flower Jasmine.

yeah that's very fair! it's definitely subjective and as i mentioned every theme is so good, so it's just hard to rank them haha

Arab here. Hearing your opinions on Arabia's theme and Egypt's theme is very interesting. I agree with your ranking of Egypt, especially with the medieval pick. Its very solid and yes, the original song is in Egyptian Arabic and the composer Say-yed Darwish is Egyptian Arab. Arabia's theme, on the other hand, is very interesting. It does not follow the Maqam Hijaz style (which comes from Western Arabia) as Civ 5 Arabia's theme. If there were some more emphasis on more traditional Arabian instruments I'd personally rank it a little higher, but for now I rank it as a solid B tier. Civ 5 Arabia theme is so much better imo.

Mr. Boes, this is undoubtedly your best tier list. I loved the others, but your wide breadth of knowledge about music theory and the research you put in here make this a genuinely useful resource for anyone interested in this game's music.
Very glad I finally had a chance to watch this whole thing. Loved your original ranking, and love the update too. I'm slated to play a Maori game soon, so I think I'll add the other S tier music civs as well, plus Brazil who I have in S tier.

I just take into account how much I start mimicing an orchestra's conductor's movements while listening. If I do: B or higher.

Balinese = faster tempo and harder hit
Javanese = slower tempo and soft hit
Those gamelans really make me feel I am on a temple, doing a prayer while actually I am playing a game 😂
yeah indonesian civ 6 theme is awesome. the only thing come close to it is civ 5 indonesian war theme

Great video Boes! I really enjoyed listening to your commentary on each civ. I also had classical training on piano so I found myself almost 100% agree with your tier list. One question tho, would you be interested in sharing your thoughts on civ's OST as well? I personally think Maori's OST Me He Manu Rere is even better than its main theme which is already S tier.
yeah there's a lot of the ambient themes/secondary themes are amazing! i forgot which civ that i mentioned this about but some of the ambient/secondary themes are even better than the main themes haha

My favorite industrial era theme is the incans bc of the overall drive of it makes it feel like a train chugging along. Also I’m biased bc I’m a drummer and it’s in 5/4
1. You may have the music tier list, but Saxxy has most attractive leaders
2. The real tier list is Vietnam S tier for waking me up when I fall asleep, everything else is C tier because I no longer have hearing after Vietnam’s music
Ottoman Theme is best in my opinion because it makes you feel that you are the center of the world and epic war gonna break out.
Great tier list, gotta agree with the Mongolian theme, makes getting overrun by horses somewhat bearable

In my opinion, France theme only make sense when you are playing as Catherine (Black Queen). Catherine emphasizes on having the most diplomatic visibility as possible. In the ancient era and the medieval era, you can only do it through sending delegation, hence the cheerful music. However, when other civs enters renaissance era and gain the diplomatic service civics, they realized the existence of spy (not saying that the AI doesn't know that spy exist prior getting the civics, just that they haven't figured out the concpet of spy since they couldn't build it). At this time they realized that Catherine has been playing two face (since she acquires spy on medieval era). On one side, she is your friend that sends you gifts, open borders, etc. However, on the other side, she have been spying on you the whole time. The music then turns darker signaling that this the era where Catherine is just playing the AI using spies. real The theme really tells a story and really the best theme when playing as Catherine (Black Queen). Otherwise, the theme just doesn't make sense, especially when playing as Catherine magnificence.
The music helped push the Zulu into at least my top 5 favorite civs/leaders to play. I think Zulu get overshadowed because their abilities are pretty simple, but they are devastatingly effective.
The fact you are guaranteed to hear their music throughout the eras makes them that much more enjoyable to play. Best song for sure.
Portugal second imo. I imagine looking out over the ocean with a sense of longing, knowing in my heart there's more out there to be discovered, and the time is near that I will discover it.

US. Didn't get the S tier and was thinking it was ridiculous. However, after listening to numerous versions of that tune, it is clearly fantastic. A tier though. Sumeria industrial is clearly S++. Most epic tune of the game. D tier is blatantly wrong.
For me the Mongolia industrial theme is a clear S. Would also have the medieval English in A, love the mashup of Scarborough Fair and The Bold Grenadier

My favourite theme is probably the Ottoman or Mali one. Idk but they sound so cool, especially their atomic ones.
If I had a top 5 it would be:
1. Ottomans
2. Indonesia
3. Hungary
4. Vietnam
5. Mali

Terrific playlist once again Boes! Found myself agreeing with most of your rankings and Civ 6's soundtrack is one of my favourite game soundtracks. Would you consider doing a Civ 5 music playlist? I find the England theme there strikes a patriotic chord a lot more than the England theme in Civ 6 and the Civ 5 version of Epitath of Seikilos is much better than in Civ 6, in my opinion :)

FR, Civ VI has some of the best music I've ever heard in a game. Knorr and co did such a great job. My favorites are the Industrial themes for Hungary, the Ottomans, and Vietnam. Those Eastern European themes make me feel ready to go dominate while the Vietnamese theme makes me emotional considering how much Vietnam went through.
Once you hear the Avengers theme in it you can't unhear it
All themes of every Civs from Ancient to Atomic deserve an S Tier, Boes. (Maybe except for Gaul but Belgians might hate me for saying that). Anyways, liked your video, and gave you a sub you totally deserve because of this.

In my humble and honest opinion, medieval themes for most civs are simply beautiful, and medieval Greece sits in a special place in my heart.

Ancient macedonians were greeks, the slavs didn't migrate into the balkans until the 6th century AD. Not that it matters much, but just so you know.
In my opinion, Rome has great early game music, but sucks once you hit the industrial and modern eras
the french theme is a classic and well known tune, that's why Rhapsody also uses it.
For me Maya is S tier.
The composer could not have chosen better for The Maya Theme, not only is it a song very close to me but a true maya composition, one that is very beautiful and jolly.
They could have gone with anything else more generic but they chose this very fitting song that would be obscure to anyone who is not familiar.
Also the Inca got done dirty, it's obvious but they shoudl have gone with "El Condor Pasa" instead. "Siempre Macho" doesn't hit the same.
Highly recommend checking out the song Waloyo Yamoni from Christopher Tin. I think it’s better than both civ theme songs he has done

As a Chinese, I find that using Jasmine 茉莉花 just feels super generic. Its like the first traditional Chinese piece non-Chinese people learn of when learning the language.
The same can be said of Kalinka, which is the core of Russia's theme.
Hard to disagree with the changes you made from the previous list. For me the Mongolia theme stands above all, the music so good that #@%$ transports me to the ancient mongolian slopes, I'm sitting on a horse next to Genghis getting ready to pillage the next town, amazing. Great work Boes.
