Shaka SHAKA! great to see the shaka being put to proper use. To many people just chuck around shakas ithout knowledge of the proper use,without proper training and ignorant to the dangers associated with wild shaka usage. I had an awesome day last week when i pulled a shaka air guitar combo just like back in "the time" aahhh the good old days.
joe aaron is a good surfer... but too much flash for the duct tape
Joel Tudor is more old school. Joe Aaron is a modern long boarder. Both are outstanding surfers.
Both of them are incredible long boarders.
though they both ride logs but have different styles. Joel rides more traditional craft hence the pivoty turns and traditional style (1:00). while joe rides more modern craft hence the flowing turns and more modern style ( 1:10). joels style of riding and type of longboard is what is found in the duct tape invitationals. the boards have to be a certain size and weight (like 15 lbs) so modern boards/style pretty much are banned. #knowledge
If you go to a skatepark on a razor scooter you are a dork, even if you can do crazy backflips. I think this is a similar thing.

I've met both of them. Both great surfers. The difference is from a young age Joel was being groomed to be the face of the long board surfing establishment where Joe is much more underground, grassroots Meaning in the big picture a threat to the mainstream crown. Personally I prefer Joe's surfing.
How does someone get an invite to the log board comp in the US Open? If Joe requested a go, why the knock back? Is there a trials event for this show? Is there more to this story?
My opinion : Joel's in control and he's like his idle (Nat) "a bit of a prick".

Joe Aaron has a smooth fancy style. He rips and nice hang tens and other moves.

Or maybe Joe wasn't invited because he looks like the love child of David Hasselhoff and The Scorpions, and it pains Joel and any other longboarder to think that they somehow influenced the kid in his pursuits.
He's a great surfer. But I think he lacks the effortless style that Joel embodies. And the pure joy as well. I can't picture him ever surfing all by himself somewhere. And that (coupled with his Knight Rider / "winds of change" appeal) is probably why he could pull an air reverse on an 11 foot log and still never get the invitation.

They both have a nice cutbacks and hand *English*,as well. I think it's called Longboarding for a reason. I also think that there are politics involved that cuts through competition in general. Whose the best surfer? The one that's got the biggest smile on their face!

Both these guys rip. It's just different. It reminds me of Dewey Weber,or Dora. Flamboyancy is always ridiculed, and then later appreciated. I glassed Joel's boards a decade ago,and the kid is really great. As a matter of fact I think Joe brought some boards by a shop in San Clemente that I glassed. Also a great kid. It's sad to see division in surfing. It reminds me of when longboarders hated shortboarding,then shortboarders hated longboarders. Lame! I have a full quiver with me at all times. Because I want to surf no matter what.
Joel is has a cleaner style, but Joe has better speed and faster carvs.
Both Surfers are incredibly talented individuals and unbelievable longboarders.
that said, Joel and Joe have completely different styles and approaches to longboarding and I think thats where Joel has neglected to invite Joe. Joel wants his event ran the way he wants it ran, and thats just how it works for his contest

I haven't surfed for years, but it is obvious that Joe is is every bit as good as Joel. Tiger invites the best players in the world to compete in his tournament. Otherwise Joel, or Tiger, may as well go buy their own trophies to put on the mantel.

Great surfing should just be enjoyed by the surfer and the watcher, it's only the ego that desires to be awarded for talent. Wouldn't it be great if egos, personality conflicts and even competition be apart from the act of riding a wave well. Purist utopian concepts aside, what the hell was that move with pointed toe popping out from behind the other foot on the nose. Bit different.
I think Joe's style is much better than Joel. He got a fancy foot movement.

Look, your surfing is sick... But complaining and comparing your self to a legend isn't going to get you an invite..... Why don't you just focus on your surfing. For one if I was Tudor I'd laugh my ass off. Just keep shredding....

JT was clear he is all about old school with a focus on style. JA is great, but more modern, faster and innovate, but also less elegant, and sometimes maybe a bit pushy. Compare JA to Alex Knost and you see another style. More the combination of style and modern elements. Each on his own great surfers.
