Gears and E3

  • The Gears team thrived on events like E3, with its glitz, glamour and
inspiration. E3 was a moment that drove the team to glory, and the
intense pressure made victory even sweeter. E3 is no more, and for good
reason, but we lost something special: a heartbeat that focused the
    industry.
This is the first in a series of Gears related videos.

That trailer is without a doubt my most memorable E3 moment. I can’t recall the last time I looked forward to a release date so much.

We already miss E3 as like you said game production was a more focused pipeline to hit deadline & the quality was there as well (I remember how I use to gauge many games / quality when viewing them at E3.

I am always so psyched seeing a new video from you! Your knowledge, trajectory, insight and the way you share this with us is one of the few nice things of the internet for me.
I still remember seeing the mad world trailer for gears of war 1. As a Nintendo kid all of my short life to that point I knew it was a new moment, the cinematic feeling was unlike any other thing I’d seen. I sold my wii and bought a 360 with gears as soon as I could afterward

As a videogame and development documentary fan, I love “The Road to E3” - it’s one of the reasons why I’m watching this channel. The other being that the content is absolutely fantastic. So, how do we bring the same energy boost to developers now, without 1. E3 and 2. the crazy and stressful crunch showcased in many of these stories?

Developers have always struggled to manage their titles. It's a tough problem and multiple year development cycles has made it even more difficult.

I remember some of these presentations. Took days off for E3. Crazy times and it’s been a long time. Weird there isn’t an E3, as you said it’s been coming for a while though. I think it started when it shifted from trade show to just show off.

Gaming is on a path to self destruction if we dont get back to some sort of order like E3. Its all now loose dates and delays. I would love to see a gears collection remaster. I doubt it will happen though.

The only thing we miss about E3 are the surprise game reveals and executives from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft making themselves look like fools during the 2006 E3.

I went to every E3 and except for the last few, they were great. I spent almost 2 decades being annoyed by my peers bemoaning the existence of E3 and wishing its demise. They had no clue what E3 meant to the industry they were so comfy in. They didn't understand that it was the one time of the year that all of the mass media was talking about games and game developers without attaching some negative connotation or tragedy with our business. Back when you could actually PLAY things, it was also the only time you really got to see what might be inspiring or coming for your lunch. I remember the E3 where Devil May Cry debuted. We were working on Buffy and felt pretty good about it. Then, we saw DMC and went back to rework all of Buffy's combat to be less stiff and fully-committed and into the combo-laden / improv-heavy powerhouse that it became. E3 was a great tool for professional game development and it will be missed, at least by this 4-decade professional who remembers what it was like to be ignored or shoved into some back room at CES.

Thanks for sharing the Buffy story! Exactly the kind of inspiration that helped drive games to be better. Were you at the Atlanta E3 where they didn't turn on the AC during setup?

I attended a handful of E3s in my life. Thought I never was in the industry except for 1 of them technically. I was either a student or someone who knew someone that got me a pass. My first event was the E3 of PS3 reveal and then several onwards for the years. I think it's going to be missed and mostly it's because of like what you said. The glitz and glamour is one thing, but it's a chance to show off to your peers. There's nothing else really like that, and these digital showcases that started back with the Nintendo Directs and now every major console publisher has an equivalent to is not the same. It's too controlled. I missed the screw-ups and live demos and little things that showed it was real people behind this in a way that sanitized trailers and interviews don't really do.

    • @laurafryer6321

If E3 had a structure to secure all you said, then yes it will be miss.
But the reality is that it change with the years to the point of becoming something that doesnt benefit anybody who can´t afford to have the best presentation.
Also the analogy of the E3 being the Super Bowl of gaming was only accomplish when new consoles were on the horizon, because the rest of the time was to show stuf that was not ready to be shown, people noticed and that hurts it.
The internet and the capacity to allow people to play betas on their home was the final nail in the coffeen.
BTW: Sorry if my grammar aint perfect, english is not my 1st language.

Cliffy B was such a boss back in the day. Man E3 being gone hurts and I dont care what games media says, Geff Keily Summer Games and The Game Awards aren't going to cut it (last year's two events proved it). Gamescom is the last big event, even though Keily does opening night, it's it's own thing and it the only thing that still has that E3 gravadous. We might not se the effect of a E3-less world until much later. But its good to see people inside the industry that had love for the event. E3 was freaking Christmas superbowl and my birthday all at once, hours on the PC, looking up all the games and articles and later watching live the press conferences..now its all spread out and esperatic and sterilized and produced...E3 was make or break, live. Sure there was cringe but the game was there and the live reactions from the crowds... hard to believe its all gone now. It might come back, something else might take its place. Its so sad to see it all gone
