I love this one !! Spandau Ballet were part of my teenage years and this is a stunner !!!! Thanks Jamie for this one !! I’ll be digging into this one as soon as I’m out of hospital..!!!!! 🎵🥃🎷🎷🎼🥃🐾🐾❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. NMHRK
Ahh.. Brings back memories. 1983, was dating my wife in high school. Got married in 85’ Now 36 years later that song is still one of our favorite’s. You played it right on target Jamie!😎 🎷🤓
Thank you so much. In spite of the scooping (which seems very much in keeping now) I always thought Spandau Ballet sax solos were a lesson in how you didn't need to be technically flashy to play really appropriate pop solos. I've yet to master that art.
Thank you so much, this is fab. If it's not too much trouble, would you possibly be able to add the song's chords to this and other music sheets...? It would help us learn more about the effects individual notes have when played over certain chords - and how to use them effectively in solos 🙂
I know a lot of experienced sax players scoff at this solo but for a beginner it is very satisfying to play, a lot like the sax solo in Electric Blue by Icehouse (you should do that one for all your Aussie fans). Thanks Jamie. Definitely buying you a coffee for this lesson.
I never scoff at pop solos or easy to play stuff. I USED to scoff at some people’s technique etc, but not anymore. Once I’VE had a few globally iconic sax solos of my own under my belt I’ll think about judging everyone else’s! 🤣
thanks Jamie - this is great. I know there's lots of very good sax players watching your stuff to learn all the amazing hard stuff, but I am only at grade 3 level and so most sax solos are too tricky for me right now. I have a list of favourites I want to be able to play one day and this one is great as its in the most basic key and the fingering is easy, just the last bit that needs a bit of practice. Thank you!
Any idea what copper tenor sax Steve Norman played at LIVE AID? Looks like Buffet Prestige Tenor Saxophone Copper Body S-1. Sounds a bit like my Buffet Series 400, but cooler looking. Thanks, Jamie, for #149 sheet music, although I didn't know you did so many as I think I have only a dozen of your gems. Nailed Norman's performance, too.
Also, I missed you singing like Steve Norman! Just another skill set sax players often are asked to fill-in when with pop groups. Plus the LIVE AID concert, Steve let loose from this solo to embellish their ending.
At last! Thanks ever so much for this, Jamie! It was one of my requests on your channel a few months back, and during the wait - and in my impatience and eagerness to learn to play - I did actually manage to find a transcription on Musescore, and without giving it much thought started to learn it... only to realise (when I had virtually all of it under my fingers) that it had actually been transcribed a tone down in Bb (so starting: F, Eb, D, Eb... etc). No big deal as it still sounds good, and it was great fun and most satisfying to learn (with arguably more difficult fingering); but now that you have finally delivered this splendid and accurate transcription, I think I'll give it another go out of thoroughness, for sure - and this time in the correct key! I was just heading towards 16 years young when this song hit the charts back in 1983 and so it's perhaps unsurprising that it's my era and brimming with 80s nostalgia for me, and so I could never ever see it through "Sax Snob Tinted Spectacles"... and now, at the ripe old age of 54, it's great to be able to at least attempt to have a go at this classic Steve Norman solo for myself! I have a good half dozen plus of your sax tutorials on the go at the moment, at varying stages of competence (with more printed off and waiting in the wings), so thanks enormously once again, Jamie, for the splendid effort you put into these first class tutorials for us all. Certainly worthy of a coffee, I think! Do keep 'em coming! P.S. Oh, by the way, based on your recommendation on the "Maneater" tutorial, I signed up for "Mr Casual" Charles DeChant's sax course as well - and yet another wonderful sax learning resource it is proving to be indeed (and it's delightful to hear his background/behind-the-scenes reminiscences, etc as a nice bonus). So lots to keep me busy... and learning... Onwards and upwards...! 🎷🎷🎷👍 👍👍
One sax solo that would be great to do is Richie Cole on The Manhattan Transfer's cover of "Shaker Song". Another would be David Sanborn on Kenny Loggins' "Heart To Heart". For 80s New Wave, The Blow Monkeys' "It Doesn't Have To Be That Way" and "Digging Your Scene" are awesome for Pop Sax. I hope you can do any of these soon.
I love this channel but I have ADHD and I can’t cope with all the amazing inspirational stuff that comes from your channel Jamie …. BUT thats not a critiscm …. I LOVE THIS CHANNEL a and I want so much to try out all the amazing stuff BUT I DAREN’T. As one of my many coping strategies I have to TURN off the feed for some of my 101 interests in life because I won’t get anything else done…instead I tell myself, I’ll get all my other S**t together first and then come back and indulge and pick up my sax again after nearly 15 years of not playing it with exception to just picking one of my 3 dusty tenor, soprano , alto saxs and then play a riff that’s been in my head for days just dying to be tried out…. Maybe when I have finished building my garden, rebuilt and levelled my shed, built my workshop, completed building and designing my CNC machine. Garage workshop …. Radio studio, recorded my favourite Prog rock artists …. Worked out some Nubya Garcia phrases…oh look I m back to Saxaphine again…. Oh God…l.lol 😂😂😂😂
Excuse me! I’ve seen the light thank you very much. In any case, I always loved Waiting For A Star To Fall, Candy, I’ve Had The Time Of My Life, Forget Me Nots, When The Going Gets Tough, Arthur’s Theme, The Best, Urgent, Englishman In New York, Maneater etc. 👌🏻
What did they use for the tenor sax part in the original? It sounds so soft and non raspy for a tenor. Is it a special kind of tenor that's used or is it filtered?

Probably one of Steve Norman's most iconic solos from his catalogue with Spandau Ballet, my favorite is probably Gold
Oh yeah, Gold. That’s on the list too.

Thanks so much 🙏🏻 haven’t missed a Sunday since I started in jan 2019!
Heard this on the radio the other week and was like, "wish there was a Get Your Sax Together about this" lol.
Perfect!
Among the best sax coaches on You Tube; certainly, the most genuine, hospitable and kind-hearted instructor on the 'net.
Thanks.
Lohvissimo, champion.
Thanks so much. 🙏🏻
How elegant and gentle you play it, that's lovely. Sounds like red wine....!🙏🍷Thanks !

you are such a star. I love whatever you play Jamie....
Thanks Peter! 😊

Yeh, sorry, I always forget. This one is just Fmaj7 to Bbmaj7 for tenor, Cmaj7 to Fmaj7 for alto. One bar each alternating.
Slow solos like this require such good tone control and long tone practice. Your tone is amazing and you do this so well. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks Gordon 👍🏻
I remember you and Jasmine’s vlog at a Wet Wet Wet gig bumping into Steve Norman! A poetic rendition, in the new romantic tradition thank you.
Em, don’t think it was steve Norman actually, I’ve never met him?? 😬
Thank you Jamie, this is awesome

Spandau Ballet
👍🏻
What is great about these is that they're not in silly keys with loads of sharps and flats like most of the transcriptions.
That’s certainly true is this case! No pun intended.
Yes - another one of my favorite songs and favorite sax solos... and a GREAT video... thank you for posting!

I find it difficult to tounge all the 16th notes, especially on that last rundown, is it ok to slur all those notes?
Yeh, they’re not all tongued, don’t worry.
Awesome. Played like a true sax snob! Not enough scooping for my taste 😈

No I don’t think so. Not all of it, some of it I think! Can’t remember tbh.
They should have hired YOU to do that solo.....dude on the recording sounds like a dying swan......
🤣
Surely people can work this out on their own? It would be a good first transcription.
Maybe they can maybe they can’t. Still fun to do the video though! 👍🏻

Nope. Normal tenor!
@@GetYourSaxTogether how does it sound so soft then?
@@camouflage81 tone, recording, mix, phrasing and stuff I guess. The saxophone can sound a million different ways.
