      @@finelife6019 Exactly. I don't remember a scene where a possible kiss or love confession or gesture was so intensely resisted but could be "read". I read the novel about 10 years ago but my English then wasn't good enough to enjoy it, while I watched the film a couple of years ago.

      Although Hopkins or Hopcyn is most common in Wales, it can also be an Irish and English patronymic surname and he could have English antecedants from other sides of his family.
      He's definitely got Irish heritage on his mother's side, Muriel Yeats.
      He is a distant relative to the famous Irish poet William Butler Yeats!
      Emma Thompson has a close Scottish heritage.
      Her mother, actress Phyllida Law, is Scottish.

    As a Brit, it does get tiresome watching all these rather quaint films about upper class type people. Go watch the movie "Kes". There's the REAL Brits.

    • @utssb
      @utssb Před 7 lety +33

      The film is centered around Mr. Stevens and Miss Kenton. They are working class. The film isn't quaint at all. It's about a butler who is exerting a massive amount of control over himself as to feel nothing. He tragically pushes away a woman who is attracted to him. His mind is obsessed with an abstract concept of complete servitude because his father infected him with it when he was a child. It's meaningless tradition that has no consideration for Stevens.
      You know, like being a Manc.
