  • I grow eggplants on the windowsill at home. The video shows transplanting eggplants into large pots for growing at home.
Nothing prevents you from growing eggplants at home! In fact, many types of eggplant often grow better in containers than outdoors. There are so many different types of eggplant! There is sure to be a variety that suits your taste.
Eggplant is easy to grow and some varieties are so beautiful they can be used as ornamental plants. The flowers are gorgeous and the eggplants look like small (or large) molded sculptures. This makes eggplant a popular container vegetable because you can always move it around for a better view.
The most famous are purple pear-shaped eggplants, which are sold in our grocery stores. But there are hundreds of different varieties, shapes and colors that make the eggplant fruit particularly attractive.
Growing eggplant from seed requires some care, but it's worth it because there is a huge variety that you can buy in seed form, while nurseries often only grow a few species. The seedlings can be transplanted into the garden in about two months, or they can be grown to maturity in a large container.
Even if you do not have a vegetable garden or greenhouse, you can grow vegetables in containers on the terrace, balcony or windowsill at home. An outdoor location that has constant access to the sun is ideal, as both light and sun are essential for a good harvest. Eggplant grows well in warm soil.
Grow eggplants in spacious pots. Pots should have large drainage holes to help balance soil moisture levels. Drainage holes will allow excess water to escape from the container, minimizing the risk of root rot. The larger the pot, the less water you need to water. The most important factor for any pot is drainage, so make sure there are many holes in the bottom of the pot and don't be afraid to drill a few more if needed. Fill a container with good quality soil. Add balanced fertilizers when planting and add them when watering. Transplant your eggplant seedlings into larger pots as they grow. When the weather gets warm, temper the plants by moving them outside for a few hours during the day. Increase your outdoor time each day for about one week. It will then be safe to move them outdoors during the growing season.
Water thoroughly and regularly. But the soil between watering eggplants should dry out a little. Eggplants don't like being too wet or too dry.
The soil should be moist to the touch at all times, but don't overdo it, especially when using pots without drainage holes. In hot and dry weather, they need to be watered several times a day. Try the surface of the soil with your fingertips and water it if it is dry. If you allow the soil to dry out, the eggplant harvest will decrease. But do not let the potting soil dry out completely.
If you are growing eggplants on site, mulch the soil with straw, leaves, or cut grass that does not contain pesticides to maintain a stable soil temperature. Use water soluble fertilizer and water the eggplant before adding fertilizer to the soil. Do not add fertilizer to dry soil. Place a trellis or use a tomato cage, if necessary, to avoid breaking branches that are heavy with fruit.
Handle the eggplant leaves very carefully. They are very fragile.
One of the biggest benefits of containerized eggplant growing is that you don't have to deal with a lot of pests.
While there are sometimes challenges in growing eggplant, these nightshades are still some of the easiest vegetables to grow in pots. And they are definitely some of the most beautiful!
