Shortline High Hood Hauling a Radioactive Train

  • The Florida Northern Railroad's West Coast Subdivision has always been high up on my "to-chase" list, and after receiving a helpful tip the day prior, I knew what must be done. I was treated to a full run from Crystal River to Newberry, with the railroad's iconic high hood GP18 doing the honors. The revenue railcar was just as cool, carrying radioactive waste offsite from Duke Power's decommissioned nuclear reactor. All in all it was an awesome chase, please like and subscribe if you think the same!

    Fantastic video and great catch. I have fond memories of the west coast sub as a child going to rainbow river in the summer and watching the endless trains rolling by.

    LOL this is so cool i was born and raised just south of Dunnellon and this used to be ran by csx coal trains to the plant loved to watch the dash 9's running heavy with a load of coal a mile and a half long....

    Very cool video. Interesting that the short line is able to make enough to stay in operation doing little more than hauling decommissioned nuclear reactor fuel and components. I'm all in for most things that keep short lines in business. Although I hope they can stay in service once the decom is complete. Excellent video as always!

      Thank you, I agree. Shortlines often have great and enthusiastic people running them, the FNOR is no exception. Thanks for the kind words as well!

    Grew up near Weeki Wachee Springs and for pretty much my entire youth, I had not once seen a train on the West Coast Sub at the plant. It's good to see that it actually is still active.

    • @FloridaRailfan

      The power plant is still active to my knowledge, I know they receive coal trains once in a blue moon. I'm pretty sure the FNOR trains are just as rare, so I was definitely psyched.

    Great coverage of a wonderful line and a fascinating operation (if only we didn't have the grafitti!). Really enjoyed your travelogue as we went along.
    Hope you might make the FECRS convention next month. Will be coming down for that and work on our Florida Adventures In Railroading auto-train (the original pre amtrak!) caboose #3 now at new home on the Saint Marys.
    In any event look forward to your next Florida trek as your insights always greatly enhance the journies.

    Hi There! I live in Crystal River FL near the FNOR Railroad Tracks I sometimes railfan there trains, they ran a train last month which I saw in Dunnellon which I have a video of it but sadly I’ve just been informed that FNOR will still being getting coal trains but because the part of Duke Energy's Power Plant in Red Level, FL that was powered by coal has been converted to burning natural gas. The old coal area is about to be demolished up to 2023 But still to this day there receive coal trains on the line which is the West Coast Subdivision used to be own by CSX Back down before FNOR Bought it in 2005 when it used to go up to High Springs, FL and when the FWC Railroad Went out of business. The trains will still run on the FNOR but just not be used that much anymore since the coal trains are marked As Needed And at least CSX and FNOR are saving manatee’s from coal infested waters. But CSX C051 and C052 will still run Also Very Nice Video!

      Thank you, the railroad is a friendly one and I kept my distance :)

    • @Danvers97
      @Danvers97 Před 5 měsíci

      The waste in the car is extremely low level. It's nothing to really worry about. Anything worth keeping distance from is in large sealed casks and you won't be able to get within any kind of close range due to guards and law enforcement. This is likely building materials, papers, soil, gloves, pretty much anything close enough to the actual fuel rods to get irradiated. Technically the gloves your doctor wears for an xray are radioactive waste when they are disposed of just a bit of trivia.

  • @centraliowarailproductions2810

    Nice catches!

  • @davidwood3477
    @davidwood3477 Před rokem +1

    When you speak of radioactive it can be from Low Level which is sightly radioactive, which means it you lived with it 24/7 there would be very minor effect on you to Class B fuel rod waste that unshielded exposure would kill you in 30 minutes. Please keep this in context.
