  • Deciding whether you should plan or procced to taking the step to undertake a PhD, is a very important decision that requires time. Undertaking a PhD is a huge commitment and there may be several reasons why you think this may be the right path for you, but it is very important that you do it for the right reasons. These reasons might be different for everyone, but personally, the two fundamental reasons are the love of research and the zeal to use that research to inflict a positive change or understanding in your society or in the world through your chosen subject. This contribution may be huge or small, but like Tesco says EVERY LITTLE HELPS!
I hope you find this video useful, but here is a general summary of why you should or should not do a PhD.
    SHOULD
    - Want to make a difference within your subject to advance knowledge.
    - Love of subject and research and potentially want a career in research or academia.
    - Interested the idea of independently working on something novel.
    - Want the chance to develop lots of transferable skills.
    SHOULDN'T
    - Everyone tells you that you should do a PhD
    - Just the next step after a bachelors degree or masters.
    - Because it might be something you may want to do later, so you rather do it now.
    - A way to earn a lot of money

I agree with you, Samuel! To do a PhD means working hard and dedicating at least four years of your life to research (and I am not talking about all the time we invested before to get it). In my case, I think a PhD is important to give visibility to my fight for equity. It would be not the purpose, but a way to do much more. So, my choice to do it is related to what you said about changing the world... In fact, that's why I chose to do it in Education. As Paulo Freire says, Education changes people, and people change the world!
But beyond that, I think the process of building knowledge is fantastic, as well as the challenge of thinking about methodologies, exercising listening and making this an opportunity for intellectual exchange!
Oh, and btw, your channel is super nice! I'm a prospective applicant for Cambridge, and your tips are helping me a lot! Greetings from Brazil! Natália. :)

I am applying to both Masters first then doing PHD. I love doing research. I study Chinese and Pakistani and South Asian languages, history and politics. I am applying for International studies/ international studies. I want to be a consultant for China and Pakistani relations. I noticed there is a need for them especially in Asian countries. I am learning Mandarin Chinese, Urdu and Punjabi.
