I got a name for this, Lupinic, simply cause it was based off Arsene Lupin, the gentleman thief. During the 70s, spies were all the rage and in anime, you had no one better than Lupin, until the 80s brought Cat's Eye. It was a nice change of pace from having Sherlock Holmes and James Bond taking care of the light side of spy work. Lupin was the definition of fighting fire with fire with him fighting the far worst criminals than him. His greatest weapon was leverage. In the series, he has a off and on team that are masters of their craft...if only they could agree on Lupin being serious 95% of the time. The code of arms is to steal the greatest treasures, not lives. Another great example is Persona 5 Royal as you're playing the leader of a group known as the Phantom Thieves in which most of the game you're stealing from the most dangerous threats hiding in plain sight in Japan.

This is exactly what I'm looking for, thanks a lot. I was equating it to characters like Carmen Sandiego and Zorro (who also might've inspired the Swordfighter) but even those characters are different from each other. I suppose it's a larger theme than I realized but you're right that the idea seems to go back to Lupin. I'm going to have to read the books because this is right up my alley.
