Be still my heart! Western Maryland Scenic Railroad 1309 is a compound articulated class "H-6" "Mallet" type steam locomotive with a 2-6-6-2 (Whyte notation) wheel arrangement. It was the very last steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1949 and originally operated by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) where it pulled coal trains until its retirement in 1956. In 1972, No. 1309 was moved to the B&O Railroad Museum for static display until 2014 when it was purchased by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR), who undertook a multi-year effort to restore it to operating condition. The restoration was completed on December 31, 2020, and the locomotive entered tourist excursion service for the WMSR on December 17, 2021. This was the first time an articulated locomotive operated in the Eastern United States since the retirement of Norfolk and Western 1218 in late 1991. AWESOME IRON and STEEL THAT LIVES AND BREATHES!

I’d love to see 1309 run in person. I’ve seen her sister, 1308 in Huntington. Most of both sides of my family arrived in the US around 1900, and they all ended up in the southern WV coalfields, most in the New River Gorge, they were around these giants when they operated. Some of my mom’s side lived on the Winding Gulf, where the Virginian and N&W operated even bigger Mallets. I’d love to experience something they considered mundane like one of these Mallets lumbering past.

She's got some serious load behind her.... running hard up a slight incline. Just a gut feeling but something looks off..... She's blowing steam off like an over pressure, smoke colour is okay but loads of it..... she's working hard.
And it may be that the fireman is producing a lot of smoke because photographers love to see smoke. . .
The train operates on a 1% grade leaving Cumberland and then climbs a 4% out of the Cumberland Narrows. I'm not sure what the grade is in the film.

Steam exhaust sounds much slower than actual exhaust - edited in later? Also the wrong whistle for this loco.
1309 cycles through whistles occasionally, this may be the 5550s whistle. It matches up and all the exhaust checks out. This film isnt edited
