Great tip! A couple things that would make this method even easier... 1. Just load the video file as a media source directly in obs instead of playing it in a media player 2. Just record the meeting in Zoom instead of opening another OBS window to record. Other than that this method worked great for me I just did this to simplify the process. Thank you so much!
@@mc.6122 If you load the video file as a media source directly in obs, in the second instance of obs you need to add application audio (beta) and select the first instance of obs as the source, because for whatever reason zoom meeting audio cannot be captured this way. so in the second instance of obs you record zhe zoom meeting with the custom background plus the application audio of the first instance. I also needed to increase the audio input of the application audio.
Son, thank you. You explained it so simply that even a computer challenged old man can do it. I am trying to do a couple of comedy videos, and you are now my go to guy. Thank you.
This is a great process. I was on a Zoom meeting today and was stunned at how good the latest release was at removing my background with zero tweaking.
So I could download clips or scenes from movies, TV Shows, etc. Broadcast them through OBS using the virtual camera onto Zoom, and then add my own green screen?!?! Absolutely GENIUS!
Awesome lesson. I second everyone’s compliments! Thank you for taking the time to figure this out for us! May I suggest the title of this video could be how to replace a background instead of how to remove a background. I’m trying to figure out how to remove a background from a video so I can add a chroma key in OBS and use it as a stinger. Any suggestions?
I’ve tried this beforehand, and especially with racer chairs with the holes in the back, or if you have stuff in your background, it doesn’t work the best
I agree with Hovindu Watawla "I am speechless! I didn't know how to add a video file into OBS. This is an instant hack that is probably so great for any person who doesn't have a green screen. This video is super helpful and thanks you so much for sharing this one" Thanks very much.
You are a great teacher. We do not hide anything from the audience or learners as a teacher. For that, we need to do learn more and more. That is my theory. All the best Kevin
Thank you is much for posting this video. It is the first one I've watched that doesn't promote an app I have to pay money for. Your instructions were extremely detailed and very helpful. Now I don't have to worry about my messy background on my videos! Will definitely be watching more of your videos
This is so awesome. I've been developing my video editing skills and I have been looking for ways to record myself with a green screen so I can put whatever background I wanted for my CZcams channel. You have shown me a new way to do this and I'm looking forward in trying this out tomorrow. Thank you.
I have been looking for this solution for YEARS! You sir are the man! I walked through this process, but it didn't appear to push the audio through to the second OBS session for some reason. That is freakin awesome though. Thank you.
Hi Kevin, yes an excellent work around. I did, however detect that there was a background distortion issue around the edges of your profile at 10.36 from Zoom's Virtual background when moving head/body. This is the problem I personally have when using the Zoom feature without an actual green screen. I am sure that you are aware of this slight imperfection. Is room lighting a solution to a crisper profile without the background lag?
Great video Kevin, I can see this works when the person talking in the video remains still. What about if I move around a lot in my videos, would it still be effective?
LOVE THIS! Thank you so much. I was looking for a way to not have to setup a green screen. Haven't tried this yet, but it makes sense. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again :)
Hi Kevin. I've been using XCAM from XSplit, but it only outputs in 720p eventhough the camera is 1080. Do you know of any other utilities that can strip the background out as recording/broadcasting is taking place? XCam is great, but I'd like to see a 1080 output solution.
Kevin, It looks like I'm the only one that had a problem. I usually can get it with you great help. I'm going to try it on another computer. Thank you!
This actually worked and got me acquainted with OBS and VLC, both excellent open-source products. However, I was creating a standalone video for use in a video project in Sony Vegas, and for that, it didn't work. It worked in that the method you described created a video in which I replace the background but OBS creates the file in a format that Sony Vegas can't use. So it was all for naught in that instance.
Use VLC or Handbrake to change the file format. In VLC, got to Media -> Convert/Save and select the file and what output type you want. There are approximately 20 options to convert to - super quick and easy. If that won't get you a usable file, Hanbdbrake can convert to and from almost 100 different formats although it is a good bit more complex in the available options.
Thank you so much! This is amazing. I was looking how to edit backgrounds out using other software and I was just struggling to get what I wanted. This made the whole process super easy and straight forward.
Bro you are a GENIUS. This is the best! it's FREE! Sure there are extra steps, here I was in my ancient version of premiere pro trying to ultra key everything out 😭 you're actually a helpful person unlike all the other people who are just trying to sell their website.
Hi Kevin, love your vids. Can you please make videos teaching java or python? Edit : I realised that you made basic python already but no java. Can you please make Java or a little more advanced python. Edit 2 : what I'm basically asking for is more coding videos.
Thanks Kevin for a great lesson. Could you please put out an instructional video on how to photoshop a missing person into an image without using Photoshop software. Also how to create a single image from multiple images without the separator lines in between
I'm an old timer and a later comer to your channel. I must say I've found your videos easy to understand and follow. Looking forward to learning more from you.
Wow,,i wish i could have a genius skills like yours, its a great and unique technique of removing video background with no need greenscreen anymore..i just used only my android phone, anyway thank you sir,,you're amazing, keep it up.👍💯
I wanted to get a video that uses the function that remove the background of Zoom, but I didn't know how to do this. However, here is the solution! Thanks!
Thanks Kevin, very clever combination of OBS and Zoom. Now, how to deal with the weird shades that usually appears around the face of the zoom participant which uses a custom background??
Hi Kevin! Thanks for the tips here. Great video! I don't have room for a green screen. Can the same process here be used to change the background while "livestreaming" from OBS? I'd love to have the beach behind me rather than closet doors. Thanks!
Very nice video, thank you! But I have to point out that (believe it or not) the process is more complex on the Macintosh. I am trying to do it myself on my MacBook Pro. I had to install Blackhole, create a multi-output device with Audio MIDI Setup (Applications > Utilities), etc. to get the audio to stream, since the Mac kept trying to run audio through the microphone. Oh, and I have to open the second instance of OBS with the Terminal. On my mid-2012 MacBook Pro running Catalina, the audio in the final video clip was out of sync. I then tried the process on my work MacBook Pro running Big Sur (this is a work assignment, but would come in handy for my personal projects). I found that the OBS video stream slows to a crawl. Thanks again for your video, I will keep trying to get it working on my Macs. (Maybe when I finally update my Hackintosh to Linux, I will try it there also.)
Great video. Very intuitive and helpful. I do have one question. Can this method work for cutting out areas of a video that doesn't have someone's profile in it? Example: Keep the sand and ocean waves in a beach scene, but change the overcast sky to be a puffy cloud kind of day.
Super easy way to do this is in Canva. You have to pay for Canva pro but it has a video background remover that seems to work very well and it's just the click of a mouse. Since there are a lot of other good tools in there it may be worth it to check out. Also an image background remover in there. Not working for canva it's just a tip for the less technical like me.
Great tip! A couple things that would make this method even easier...
1. Just load the video file as a media source directly in obs instead of playing it in a media player
2. Just record the meeting in Zoom instead of opening another OBS window to record.

thank you fr this explanation. i have been trying his steps and it is not working for me.
Wow if this works it will be amazing to edit in old videos with new background. Thanks for tip
This works but my problem here is the audio. There is no audio output
Keep at it sir! Goodluck!
computer challenged girl here too. Music video making.
William, are you his dad?
oh so nice
computer challanged xDDD
This is a great process. I was on a Zoom meeting today and was stunned at how good the latest release was at removing my background with zero tweaking.
Eventually no physical green screen will be needed due to software advancements
So I could download clips or scenes from movies, TV Shows, etc. Broadcast them through OBS using the virtual camera onto Zoom, and then add my own green screen?!?! Absolutely GENIUS!
One of the most useful things I’ve ever seen, such an amazing tip…I am in complete awe, how you figured this cross compatible use-case…thanks a ton!
I am first because I haven't refreshed !
Youre 4th
@@gradientO nice
You really have a talent for explaining. I don't get bored watching your vids they just flow. Thank you.
Man this wasn't funny... I mean this was intensively explained.
Teaching is a gift which you fully possess

I totally agree.
But then you could add a green background in zoom and record the session so you put whatever as background
I’ve tried this beforehand, and especially with racer chairs with the holes in the back, or if you have stuff in your background, it doesn’t work the best
Why is there a applaud button
This is such a great work around if you don't have the space or money for a green screen. Super helpful video. Thanks fo sharing this Kevin. :)
sign of tremendous sophistication you didnt start off with "HEEEEY GUYS"
Wow, Kevin, you are a wizard. Thank you, never knew that we could do that with zoom and obs. You are amazing!
I agree with Hovindu Watawla "I am speechless! I didn't know how to add a video file into OBS. This is an instant hack that is probably so great for any person who doesn't have a green screen. This video is super helpful and thanks you so much for sharing this one" Thanks very much.
This one is 100% legit, im not even a bot.. saved my life when i already finished editing. thumbs up!
Kevin, You are genius. I dreamed about this possibility and you have just made it.
You are a great teacher. We do not hide anything from the audience or learners as a teacher. For that, we need to do learn more and more. That is my theory. All the best Kevin
That was a very interesting technique to learn.

FYI you can record the Zoom video directly using the Zoom's local recording feature. It saves you extra steps and easier on the CPU

If you have a decent GPU OBS + a BGR PLUGIN should do fine in 2022
Thanks Kevin. Your instructions are so clear, i could understand even without watching for most parts of it. 👌
Brilliant!!! This is ingenuity at its best.
Not really the image of you any person is Blurry on the edges
And here I am with a homework I have to finish..
Thanks again man
Your voice is so clear that makes me understand....
Speechless! You did great explaining how to do this. Thank you so much.
