I was so excited when I heard Brennan was DMing but after I watched it I was still blown away by him the way he can just improv when needed is just something to behold.
Matt really told Brennan: "Here's all my lore, all my Gods, all my Magic, in a setting that everyone knows ends horribly. Go nuts."
And Brennan ran with it to the ends of the earth and beyond.
He's playing not just for the Dimension 20 fans but for all the Critters too. There's a lot of people watching.

@@Squeekysquid As a player, I love when stuff like this happens. It's all about trust. I try to let the GM trust me to explore the world and immerse myself in the story, and I have to put faith in my GM to hurt my character for it. All in all, you seem like someone who could pull something like this off.
Take a look at Brennan's double-take when Travis says he can spot illusions and sensory magic, then Brennan checks the table and realizes everybody is looking down at their notes and not at him - and he allows himself to crack a smile.

I don't believe that Brennan originally had that invisible guy there until Travis called out that ability. And right there is Brennan getting the idea to do something fun.
I love Brennan's "The Problem with Invisibility" exposition. Fitting for the Age of Arcanum setting too.
It adds a nice level of realism to fantasy that makes the study of arcane and the status of mages seem so much more appropriate.
He had them hanging on every, word. I'm so so happy that Brennan is getting the love he had rightly deserved for YEARS! What an opener.
100% agree, this series is gonna be a rollercoaster.
Saw plenty of comments on the Twitch thread begging to make Brennan a series regular. Folks, if you want more of this kind of intense, whiplash-inducing storytelling, there's more Brennan over at College Humor's Dimension 20 series. There's also more Lou, and a bit of Aabria, and even a Marisha and a Mercer or two!

@@logicaloverdrive8197 yup, but I understand if people are apprehensive of paying $5-6 a month for a comedy streaming subscription, especially since there's a contingent of Critters who only watch the livestream and/or the Monday CZcams VOD.
Personally, as I can afford to pay for multiple streaming services, it's a no-brainer for me, especially since it's so much more value for me than other streaming services I'm currently subscribed to. Unlike Netflix, Prime, or HBO, I have almost at least one show to watch weekly, and sometimes 3. Dropout should've run out of content 2 years ago when IAC dumped them, but they've managed to constantly drip-feed engaging shows at a shoestring budget, and I love them for it.

When he first introduced his character and said he was a rogue I was like wow that's so smart he's gonna be an arcane trickster but then I figured out he wasn't and I was even more intrigued.

Brennan did his research on individual fears shows hardcore.
Brennan is such a great DM I'm so excited that maybe some critters get to see him DM that haven't had the chance before.

Do you think Travis knows that 2/3 of the EXU Calamity highlight videos on CZcams are of him being amazed, delighted, excited, or shocked? I love how much he's loving this.
I'm so glad he decided to be apart of the EXU calamity series he seems to really be enjoying the ride even saying it makes him want to play a rogue. I think after this Chetney might be going rogue the rest of the way after he got a taste with Cerrit.

it is fun watching Travis and Sam dealing with Brennan DM style since almost of their gaming experiences is with Mercer and his style.
Things are really shaken up! Mercer's style is like an a long epic. Brennan's style is fast and pulpy.
Now if only we can get Emily and Laura playing at the same table and get a "Slippery Cupcake".....
These two and Deborah Ann Woll are my favorite and what inspired me to become a DM and mirror their style. I've tried to blend all 3 into one.

You can hear the breath Travis takes when Brennan says "you're not alone in this room." It's deep like I KNEW IT but also a little shaky like WTF I REMEMBER HOW THIS EPISODE STARTED.
You can see Lou smile when Brennan says mirror.
I feel Like Lou , Marisha, and Aabria knew what was gonna happen when Brennan was announced as DM but everyone else was in for an experience.
this is the first time i have seen Brennan actually dm outside of the little shorts you see, the man has a charisma and a way with words im sure he was a succubus in an alternate life
When he was announced I was so excited that some of the critterverse that has never seen him DM were gonna be in for such a treat he is so amazing.

@@comandantegrimes9549 if you ever have some spare time check out his series "A Crown Of Candy" where he merged candy land withe game of thrones. It was seriously dramatic and political with a candy themed world.
High Level Rogues are incredibly deadly, and the kind of Rogue Travis is playing is very much a "Sherlockian" kind of type, aka the "Inquistive Archetype".
I was really hoping that he was going to be an Inquisitor Rouge for C3. Glad we get to see it though.
Masterind is another fun support rouge for this type of setting

They all killed it this first episode just so good. Everyone especially Travis just consuming the scene Brennan is creating.
Luis out here trying to make a good first impression and be a good note taker, but the description of the invisible man just floors him.

I love this so much. Watching him get to flex his narrative muscles in front of a group more used to a numbers game is a treat.
Man, Travis is the perfect tabletop rpg player its crazy, he gets really into it, puts tons of attention to what everyone does and enjoys the hell out of it, i love both Matt and Brennan but i think how good some players are sometimes get undermined.
Maybe its because they're "newer" players, Travis got into it with CR, like how Lou got into it in D20, they both were great already but they tackled D&D with such open mind and accepting nature that its just a pleasure to see them interact with the DMs like this, as a Forever DM myself, there's nothing i appreciate more than a player like Lou, that's always up for some antics but doesnt destroy the party or make it a worse experience for anyone else or a player that forgets about everything else and gets really into everything that's happening, like Travis.
Lou and Brennan, iirc, have played DnD together for a while before they started doing it for live play. Though, in your defense, live play is a bit different than spontaneous DnD at a home game.

Literally such a good DM I have never seen until today a DM LITERALLY FUCKING JUMP SCARE A PLAYER.
Everyone in this show did such a fantastic job. Travis was my personal favorite, because he was Noir detective trapped in a convoluted plot with very powerful people and his only tools were his insanely trained physical skills. It's beautiful to know we were gifted with such a show and is sad to know the chances of capturing lightning in a bottle again like they did here are very very very small.
And there's something so poetic about a character that can see through everyone except the people close to him.
I would love to watch Brennan and Matt play in the same game. Not DM, but play.
His face as he cries out. "Nooo! You can't do this to me!"
I love this so far. Somehow Brennan made Pervon really cool, interesting and someone who's extremely lethal.

Like I just can't get over how well he keeps EVERY players attention through this entire episode. He has truly mastered the art of leaving people hanging on every word. I can only hope to respectfully invoke his style of DMing. PLUS, Luis has easily become my favorite new addition to this series, his RP is so heartfelt and genuine that I can't look away

@@liminalsoup He'll only need two more levels to get Rogue subclasses. However, the Unerring Eye feature (the one he used to find the invisible man) only comes at 13th level, so the only way Chet's getting that is if he completely abandons Blood Hunter and goes Lycan 5/Inquisitive 15 at the end of the series.
Personally I think 3 levels of Rogue is fine for what Chetney's supposed to be, and I wouldn't even give him Inquisitive; Chet would probably fit Assassin better, since he's a murderous little asshole.

this shows how great Brennan is as the GM, he can jump scares you right in front of your face with just a detail naration and a wave of a hand.. no pictures, no soundtracks, nothing like in the horror movies.

I'm quite behind in the lore of Exandria, I don't even know who is Vespin Chloras, and why the crew was so scared of him. I only understood after reading the wiki.
He had a blink and you miss it mention in campaign 3 so you weren't missing anything much. I believe they were reacting the way they did purely off the info that was given this episode: that he was a mage who may have attempted to overthrow a betrayer god in order to ascend to godhood

there is something understated and compelling about Zerxus. I don't think we've had this kind of levity in character since Percy. Also really dig how he questions the gods and their ethos.
Im not convinced Travis could have rolled a 21 for stealth. He's a level 14 Rogue with a +5 dex. If he took expertise in stealth his minimum roll should be 23+

@@hammer4865 perception/ investigation? Seems like a double up so maybe not. With a 31 investigation (I think) he would need expertise in it to achieve.
Also I was confused because I think he only said he had a +7 to attack but I might have misheard him and it was a +7 to damage.
@@RollModelsYT yeah, imma have to see the full character sheet. +7 to damage means he has two +2 magic hand axes that use dex instead of strength. Not impossible for level 14 in a high magic game.

I do apologize if you look at my other videos I don't usually post this sort of stuff this is my second video I've ever clipped from critical role my other being from campaign 2. I had 19 subscriber and averaged 60 views a video I never thought a video I'd post would get this big now seeing this in the future will post after VOD release I just loved this moment and clipped it but I have been going through a hard time personally lately with depression and anxiety and getting to chat with so many critters has made the past few days amazing for me. I am sorry in the future I will post after the VOD release. Also I am not monetized so I wont make a cent off the video.

Wait wait wait - he let HIS PLAYER roll attack rolls WITH ADVANTAGE against an invisible creature. Even if the creature is DETECTED that attacks are at DISADVANTAGE. And you give you player (impossible) Stealth (without a Hide Action - also against the rules - another rules infraction), then the Advantage would NEGATE the DIsadvantage and the attack roll would be as normal (neither advantage NOR disadvantage).
This DM is soooooo bad.
Oh and WITHOUT ADVANTAGE there's no Sneak Attack damage.

Disadvantage can be cancelled out, and on a 31 roll for a player specifically built in such a way as to detect sneaky mage shit, it's absolutely reasonable to cancel it here, especially as the PC can literally see where the invisible character is. Detection is usually based on sound/smell, which aren't going to give the same level of information.
"And you give you player (impossible) Stealth (without a Hide Action". - He isn't stealthing to hide here, He's having the player roll to see if he can draw weapons without being detected. Stealth is an appropriate roll and the DM clearly rolled perception for the NPC and failed the check
With an absolutely, completely unsuspecting NPC, who has every reason to think he is safe and who failed a perception check, it's reasonable to grant surprise. Page 195 of player's handbook. This gives advantage, which gives sneak attack.
I'd hate to play at your table...you've managed to
1) misinterpret what's actually happening
2) make rule mistakes, which is usually fine but
3)insist you're right
4) turn a very cool scene, handled extremely well by the DM, into a nitpicky, neckbeard rant.

Nothing I said was incorrect and you can't change that fact.
Facts:
1- There was no Hide Action - So he had no Stealth- Fact.
2- The creature was INVISIBLE so the attack would at a minimum be at Disadvantage even if detected - Fact
3- Even if for whatever random rules breaking reason the DM gave the player Advantage to negate the Disadvantage from Invisibility (without and actual basis in the rules) ... but let's say he did, the two would have just negated and the attack would be as normal... but guess what- normal roll is NOT with advantage - so there were be NO SNEAK ATTACK AS WELL- FACT.
All facts.

1) you didn't read or understand what i said. the stealth role was for concealing the weapon draw, not a bonus action hide.
2) invisibility does not guarantee a disadvantage on attacks if detected as per RAW - only if detected via certain methods - not the ones used here. Again, you missed what I said.
3)Given that, the attack would have been made normal. However, advantage was given because of the stealth role for concealing the weapon draw. This makes sense both in a realistic sense and a RAW sense.
It's actually really annoying to see someone who is so confidently incorrect. And even if you were correct? Who cares? Narratively, it makes sense, and everyone at the table clearly loved it, along with the audience. You're doing the thing that mediocre, unsuccessful nerds do where they try to tear down something over a technicality but miss the underlying context. In this case, you're also wrong about the technicality.
It doesn't matter how many times you say "Fact" if you are not, in fact, correct. The facts just don't care about your feelings here.
@@markhammil3148 You are correct RAW, however RAW are not God. DM has final say, and Brennan's reasoning is pretty solid. He knows exactly where the target is on account of having been able to see where his pupils are (he doesn't have to give advantage to cancel disadvantage, you *can* just remove disadvantage), and he has the drop on the target because said target doesn't know Cerrit's onto him. Perfectly reasonable call.
