    Simple. The blade is plasma coated during the manufacturing process for which makes the blade more resilient against the elements. This blade can be submerged in water and it'll be perfectly fine compared to most other swords that would take on rust if done to them. People who own their own have ran water tests on this sword and compared the results with a regular unoiled fighting sword. Before Hanwei came up with this kind of blade, it was always a pipedream to have a real fighting sword that didn't require oiling. It was either you had a wallhanger sword that didn't rust, but would kill you if used in a real fight or a real fighting sword that would hold up in a fight, but then requires oiling to prevent the elements from eating it away. The Hanwei Tactical Wakizashi with its Plasma Coated 5160 Blade has solved that problem by leaps and bounds. This sword is more for fighting in a horrible warzone than to be used as a mere workhorse. It looks modern, it's elegant in its own way and one hell of a sword to own. Also, its great to use with either single or two handed methods. People want this sword the most for not having to oil it after each use for whatever the reason.

    Bought one, love it. I'm no expert but I knew it was for me when I saw it. Maybe it's for beginners.

    I fully understand why the "tactical" katana is so popular. And I honestly wish more brands would make quality ones. The Hanwei ones in particular have a very cool look to them, they hit on what a "tactical" sword should be, and that is SIMPLE. No spikes, no MOLLE comparable sheath, just a Japanese blade made simple. More so, the Blue, brass, silver looks really nice, at lest to me. Blue is not a color used too often on swords, one reason I got a Valiant Armory Rhinelander with a blue handle and accented scabbard, and why I loved one of your Katana projects a while back.
    I think the knife construction on a sword has a mass appeal, take the popularity of the Messer among enthusiast for example. Having a full tang gives a sense of sturdiness, even if it's not actually any better in practical applications. But it has a quality, one can look at it, and instantly understand how it's made, and that can bring some comfort to an individual.
    Sturdy swords in general have a big market. A lot of people want to be able to go out into the woods and slash at trees with out worry, it's the reason I, and many others, have Cold Steel/condor Swordchetes, and why brands like Zombie Tools do so well.
    Say, as a side note; Are you considering looking at the Condor "tactical" ish looking line? I have a feeling, if they are well enough made, they will be as popular as the Hanwei line was.

    Thanks for the info about this sword! Man, I still gotta play Final Fantasy Tactics.

    Final Fantasy Tactics is my all-time favorite game, and I completely agree with you.
    Tactical Wakizashi really fits a category of preferred weapon - indoor, close range, fight stopper..
    The "tactical" aspect appears to replace the traditional fifteen piece handle assembly with as few parts (modern, resilient parts) as possible - this makes it appealing.
    Traditionalists might scoff at such a departure from the intricate perfection of a traditional Japanese weapon, but a fight doesn't care about your folded steel, spiritual essence garbage..
    Marines take bayonet and machete into battle, for all the reasons, and I have no doubt this would also be chosen, if it was an option.
    You can choke up for more delicate work, or you can hang onto the back of it for a maximum delivery of all thirty inches..
    Thanks for another well spoken, informative, and humorous video - I have been both enlightened and entertained..

    I am right there with you Matt, I have no idea why that sword would sell for so much. I had a brand new Tori katana that I had for a few months and when I fell on hard times I had to turn around and sell it. I only got about 45 percent of the MSRP when I sold it, so I have no idea why that one sells for as much as it does. On another note, I thought your idea of what tactical was awesome lol. I too love the Final Fantasy tactics game and wish they would come out with something like it or a remake.
    I have been wanting to ask you something, how do you feel about a well made W2 blade to the Hanwei special alloy steel? Since I know that you have had both kinds of blades before, I would like your opinion on it.

    • @Matthew_Jensen
      @Matthew_Jensen  Před 7 lety

      I have used W2 blades and the hanwei alloy steel blades. I like the steel hanwei makes. I love my bamboo mat and it has held up very well. For the most part, either one will hold up well if it is made well enough.

      I use Josiah Boomershine. He does most of the polishing I need for the projects I have.

  • @gruknarorcishwar-yerhereto8489

    I think it could just be because when I look around for a wakizashi unless you get the very small sub 500$ market your paying almost as much is not the same price as it’s katana counterparts from the same company and such.

    Slap Tacticool in front of anything and people will go nuts for it. I also think people are interested in the gripped handle as apposed to the wraps.

  • @justanotherinternetexpert7743

    OMG I am rather new to the online sword realm and I have noticed people really take this stuff very seriously maybe alittle too seriously in our modern age. Dont get me wrong i love me some swords, that being said I am really loving your videos you seem to know your stuff, all the technical terms, ect. but you are able to make it fun to watch and very entertaining. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, drunken reveiws are awesome!

    • @Matthew_Jensen

      they can be removed but not easily. removing them would likely break them. It is similar to a knife in that way.

    If the blade is a good solid 5160 it makes it valuable as the full Tang makes it customizable. The handle can be replaced with exotic wood or solid g10 scales. From watching your videos it seems to me that the weak link in blades that cost up to two thousand dollars is a loose says wrap that can make it dangerous or expensive to send out to rewrap. How many of you here have spent a thousand on a sword only to discover that it rattles and the wrap slips? Over and over again I see this on your sword reviews. The full Tang on this sword gives you customizing options that will last a lifetime under hard use rather than unravel after a short time. The scabbard can also be remade to fit the blade better. So three hundred bucks is a good price for a good blade to send out and have reworked. It would last longer and be more reliable than most of the high end swords you feature on your videos. Also ko katanas are very rare.

    • @Matthew_Jensen
      @Matthew_Jensen  Před 6 lety +1

      You can weigh tactical and traditional construction on the same scale but for most people they have different uses and appeals. A well made tsuka can last years (not a lifetime) but a good long while. I think the goal of the swords are different for most.
      You do have a valid point about replacing the scales. I suppose you can do that with a nakago as well. You can put a different grip on that from a different style and it would last longer too.

    What's a good Katana for $100-150 price point decently sharp and good looking

    • @Matthew_Jensen
      @Matthew_Jensen  Před 7 lety

      I thought the Ronin RK series was good. My first video was about that sword. It was OK. The Hanwei Practical XL is around $200, I thought that was a good sword for cutting. Otherwise I would go and look for second hand pieces.. You get more for your money that way.

    I had one and didn't care for it. Kind of gimmicky, the edge wasn't very sharp and the habaki had too much play. Sold it off and recently got the Cold Steel Warrior Wakizashi with the extended tsuka, and wow, this feels like a beast.

    Matt, there are people in this world who love swords and therefore want to believe that they are still practical in modern warfare/combat. These type of people flock to any product that attempts to validate this desire/belief. That is why it is so desired. This product says “hey, swords aren’t useless in the modern age, they are practical and it’s ok to think of yourself wearing one into modern combat.” Whether or not this is true, idk. Most combat veterans would say no but mad jack Churchill managed to do it during WW2 so who knows.
