FUN FACT! Disney Studios spent *years* in the early 2000s working on a 3D version of Mickey Mouse whose ears behaved like the 2D cartoon without looking creepy. So your fears of infinite twisting? A group of programmers legitimately had to think about that.

So it took them years to figure that out? Come on, it can't be that hard... there's a thing in CGI called 'billboard sprite' which consists of having a flat plane that rotates so that it always faces the camera(I remember it being used in crowds and foliage in games older than 3d Mickey), from there you just need to use the same equations from the billboard to drive the rotation of Mickey's ears. The only complication I can think of now is constraining the rotation's axis so that it's correctly parented with the head in 3d.
@@israelRaizer Yeah there was no way Disney's 3D division was going to settle for a 2D solution used in video games for render-quality CG animation of their mascot character. Especially since Mickey's ears have volume: you need that dynamic highlight around the inside rim of the ear that a 2D sprite could only do via hand animation, which defeats the purpose. Also, keep in mind the early 2000s is getting close to twenty years ago. A lot of what you take for granted in 3D programs today were unsolved problems back then, including rigging. The complex weighting needed to maintain head and ear volume while also shifting connected geometry around a surface is WAY easier today, practically out of the box. Back then, it all had to be developed from scratch.
Similarly, Tangled is the most expensive movie Disney ever produced, not because it was literally that expensive, but because they sunk the entire budget for modernizing all their 3D engines and programs to Pixar-level
Ironically, in 2013, Disney made a 2D Mickey Mouse series that effectively broke all of Mickey's design rules, and it ended up being an award winning series. Go figure.

Just like Mickey Mouse, Spinel’s heart buns/ponytails always face the viewer too. I think it was because Mickey was made when animation was still new and was animated in the rubber hose style, which again, is just like Spinel. Hope you liked the little fact!
