- There is a clear winner here. And the thing that upsets me is that people are trying to make money from products that do not work, and in this case, can put somebody's wellbeing at risk. You’re welcome. The thing is, it’s not just that you’re wasting $30, but you’re getting something that is wildly inaccurate, and in this case, potentially dangerous. Definitely save your money up until you’re able to get a reliable device

Yes, I created a video about 6 air quality monitors and also a few of these fake monitors like the black one you show here... I am getting ready to create another video that will show exactly what sensor this is in this for CO2 readings, and you will find it quite funny (or angry actually) what they are actually using to detect CO2. I definitely agree with you that to create devices that are scam devices just to make money - that can and will cause a death - is extremely un-acceptable. Great video and nice to know that someone else has created a video about these fake fake fake monitors.
Thank you for your comment. Healthcare is one area that it is absolutely unacceptable to try to sell fake / dud items. It’s not acceptable in any case, but with healthcare, as you mentioned, can cause death. I am very happy to purchase online (esp. directly from companies that make the products, like Apple, etc), but there are a few categories of items that I would not buy from places like Amazon or eBay. And these are healthcare items (like CO2 monitors, face masks, hand sanitisers), food, computer storage (like memory cards) and sneakers. I would particularly not be happy if I received fake items from these categories.

I wouldn't discount all no-name products as I have a few that are very very good, as it is companies like that - that give those of us who don't have allot of money to be able to have decent tools, meters etc. to work with. The monitor that I am getting ready to review/tear-down is a no-name monitor but looks very interesting and am creating this video for someone in Ukraine that doesn't have allot of money who is concerned (after watching my first video) about getting a device he can afford - that actually works, and I am hopeful that the monitor IS one of those (no-names) that do work - but we will see... There really needs to be an agency in place that could put a stop to companies creating and selling devices that WILL kill - if not already. My channel is devoted to helping people make more informed decisions about what they are purchasing and that is very exciting, and more exciting than that - is the hope that one day, these videos - will save a life.

I bought one of these (Aranet4) last week and love it. One of my fave places to go for food, I wanted to be able to sit inside, not outside. But I sat outside and asked to put the meter inside to see if next time I went there I didn't have to sit out in the cold. The place was 1/3 full and got up to a co2 of 1,449 in 20 minutes. So, as I love the food from there, I still go, but sit outside, they even bring the pay machine for me to pay outside (I do wonder how fair it is on the wait staff). A bar I go to I thought would be bad, but it didn't go over 650. Can I also suggest, people try checking their reading in their bedrooms at night ....not for the covid issue, but just for good sleep health ( I didn't know the levels were getting as higher as they were - over 1,900 at 4am....and why the app is useful), and also in the car (hint take off recycled air, AND put the fan on in winter (no wonder I was getting tired on long drives). Also, remember, if you are working from home, try it in your office just to test. Derek, thanks for this review, as I was thinking about buy cheap ones for xmas pressies, not now. Other than the co2 monitor the aranet4 has temperature, humidity and air pressure (hPa) excellent for the data nerds.
Thanks for your comment. The Aranet 4 is great. I agree with everything you said. Some places that you think are well ventilated are surprisingly not, and vice versa. Cars are really bad with the recirculating A/C. I also love your suggestion of monitoring in the bedroom for sleep. And yes, I don’t trust the no-name cheap ones. Stay safe.
I bought one of the cheap no-name monitors from eBay (out of interest, not because I expected it to be accurate). It does sometimes show high readings above 1000 ppm, but often in circumstances where I wouldn't expect the CO2 level to be that high. Also, the reading can change dramatically between updates every second. I don't have any faith that it's accurate. Next time around I'll get an Aranet4 to check against.

I have a Aranet4 and just got another monitor (no name) from Amazon. There's a big difference and I'll be returning the no name one.

Great test however saying everything is not worth buying on Amazon is a bit harsh. The Temtop M2000 can be bought with shipping for around $AUD 300 and it is probably a much better air quality monitor than Aranet4 - it does CO2 and a whole lot more, and you can see reviews from other CZcams videos on how accurate it is.
As usual, before buying, just do your own research. You’re right- there’s a lot of good quality products on Amazon. I’m super careful with things that are health-related because quality / accuracy is crucial to me. I actually didn’t come across the Temtop that you mentioned. If it’s accuracy, than that’s great. I recently purchased a TemTop M2000 meter to create a video review for my channel along with 5 other monitors to compare. The TemTop M2000 was defective and Amazon quickly sent out a replacement... - Unfortunately, the second M2000 was more defective than the first one - so I don't know if it is because TemTop is going way down on quality, but when I told TemTop customer service about the issue I had and that I needed a good one that worked for my CZcams video I was creating, they just suggested that I buy a more expensive model from them... Interesting for sure... The TemTop M10 (that I also reviewed in the video) seems to be a great monitor but unfortunately is does not have the CO2 sensor inside. To get a monitor that has a CO2 sensor inside - is very expensive. I found a handheld CO2 monitor that I am going to be reviewing in my next video, but it is around 200.00. It is a shame that a sensor that is so important to have around has to be so expensive, but like what has already been said "we should just save our money and buy a good one"...
Most cheap chinese CO2 meters have just 1 sensor for organic funnes in it with 1 analog output. I think they call it eCO2, estimated, the idea is if there are a lot of organic fumes, a lot of breathing has happened and there should be low CO2 too. They are often 5 in 1, and the calues are basically junk.
I have such a device, and it shows 450 in a small room, unventilated with me breathing for hours.Cannot be.
If i blow on it, CO2 explodes, as you would expect. But the sensor just reacts to the orgnic components I exhale and assumes CO2 must be high too.
You can easily spot that fake scam CO2 devices. If you put perfume next to it, Co2 will skyrocket, despite nothing has changed for the CO2 levels just because of the perfume. It senses the organic components, and assumes CO2 is a lot higher too, which it isn't.
This is a very common scam.

i'm just wondering about use of this on an airplane.. if the number gets high, what can even be done (if on a plane)? is this just a way to figure if you're exposed to covid or something?
The monitor will give you an idea of what the quality of the air is like. It will alert you when there is poor quality air- in terms of aircraft, it’s especially bad when the plane is on the ground. In a situation like a plane, if you’re wearing your mask, there really isn’t all that much you can do about it. It’s not like you can leave…. The higher the number, the more rebreathed air around, and the more likely you’re to catch something if it’s in the air. I think at this moment, the chances of somebody on the plane with Covid is reasonably high. It doesn’t mean you’re going to get it- it just gives you an indication that if there is something bad in the air, it’s not being cleared. All the best and stay safe

Is it normal for the monitor to record values between 280-300 ppm while outdoors? I have one and it is recording values below 400 ppm.
Mine’s never recorded such low numbers. Have tried calibrating the unit? And made sure it’s not on plant mode, but rather, human mode?

@@freedom_born I’m actually not sure. I haven’t tinkered with the device too much. I just have it around so I know I’m not breathing in too much of other people’s air. These devices are problematic in that there is no “gold standard” to compare it with. We’re basing our decisions on reputations of brands, and we’re making the assumption that the “good brands” are actually accurate, which I have a problem with.

Sincerest thanks you mate. I’ve seen versions like this cheapo one on eBay that costed $90. I’ve seen inkbird ones that cost about $199. But the $90 one looks exactly the same as the $30 one. I understand if you want quality prepare to pay. But since there’s a significant difference between $30 & $90 i can’t “really” trust either. The inkbird option sounds a little more affordable than aranet, but I’ll keep searching

Yep. There are things that I wouldn’t normally buy on eBay. Not only because I might get scammed, but some dodgy products can be downright dangerous. Things like healthcare products and food, I would not buy except from a reputable dealer. Stay safe.
