    How did we get here?
    After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

    It’s been a really weird few months dealing with this, especially not feeling like I could talk about it until I had more answers. It feels a lot better having it off my chest but let me tell you, the waiting game has been the most difficult part. We’re hoping we’ll have answers later this week but as we said in the video, we probably won’t be back with a new one next Sunday. The good news is Todd has been finding creative ways to keep my mind from spiralling...already excited to share all the beautiful things we're growing in the garden. We'll see you soon xoxo

    My mother passed away from colon cancer at age 28 when I was 2 years old. I'm now 65 and started having colon cancer screenings at age 30 every five years due to high risk. It wasn't until ten years ago that only two polyps were found, and those were benign. Back in the day they didn't have the knowledge or tools to effectively detect or treat the disease. Things are much better now and you are smart to take the steps you are taking. Wishing you both and your fur kids the best! Love your videos!

    As one who has been in medicine for 55 years here in the US I am appalled at the medical foot dragging you have described ! Unreal ! Your surgeon should have given you a report as soon as you woke up from the procedure! Now if there was a biopsy done that could take a day or three for results! NOT WEEKS! Owing to your family history the standard of practice is that you should have a colonoscopy every 5 years! I pray you get good news! Best always to Tyler and Todd !

      Colon cancer is also on the rise among younger people across the globe (all countries) for some reason. I was 36 with stage 2A, all good now! Colonoscopys are annoying but so important...if you have family history, get one, don't wait for GI symptoms like blood or anything. I had no symptoms and no family history, just lucky.
      Edit: I also wanted to say cancer sounds scarey but it's not a death sentence! Don't fret, even with advanced stages there's oftentimes treatments...anyway it's not the end of the world, it's just a new way of life.

      I’m sure you’ll be fine, it doesn’t stop you from worrying though I know, went through something similar with a breast lump during Covid . It took ages to get a biopsy appt., then it was inconclusive so they removed it, took more ages for that appointment , they kept saying they were 98-99 % sure it was benign. It was, I worried for several years for nothing.
      Think positive, no sense worrying until you’re told there’s something to worry about.🥰

    Tyler, you may never know who you are helping. I was told to get a colonoscopy years ago, due to gastric pain. I was scared and just…didn’t. Last year, a friend of mine shared about hers on Facebook and invited anyone with questions to reach out to her. I did, and she walked me through the process and even checked on me several times to make sure I went. Fast-forward several months…the procedure was painless, and most importantly, we found out what was wrong with me and treated it. I’m so grateful to my friend for speaking up about the importance of this procedure - and I’m proud of you, too. Praying that you get answers and the right treatment ASAP, dear.

Hospitals take regular payments you know, and they accept what you can afford to pay. Just don't ignore them. As long as you are making an effort to pay SOMETHING on a regular basis, they cannot, and will not, take you to court. The judge would see you are making an honest effort to pay and they will tell the hospital to accept what you can afford to pay monthly. Can't get blood out of a stone and they know that.

    My grandfather had colon cancer 5 times! My dad had a colonscopy at 65 and had pre-cancer polyps removed. At 38, I had the same problem as you, Tyler, and had to fight for a colonscopy. It was a good thing I did. They removed 3 polyps and discovered some diverticulitis. At first, it was 2 years, then 3 years, and now it's 5 years to be retested. At 63, I am good. Diet has changed, but I'm clean and clear. Good luck, and you have my prayers. Being proactive saves lives.

I’ve been on an every three years colonoscopy regime and luckily things have always been clear. I pray that you have all clear results. After many years of clear results my doctor told me after my last one at age 70 he felt I was safe not to have any more!👍🏻. I don’t miss those yummy drinks! My doc also had a great sense of humor and claimed he didn’t recognized his patients by their faces….only when he was walking behind them. Great Doc! Love to you both.

    Tyler my heart goes out to you for having to deal with this and not getting answers for so long 💔 I’ve spent most of my career working in Interventional Radiology- where we do embolization to treat GI bleeds when the GI docs can’t fix them with the scope. I’ve always thought the insurance/private pay situation in the US was such a nightmare and a mess, and I guess in my head I’ve glorified the idea of having a public health sector. Back when y’all were dealing with kidney stones it really put things into perspective- NO CT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT? WHAT?! What if someone is having a stroke?! But the idea that you’ve literally spent YEARS with symptoms that may be mild but could potentially be very serious is absolutely abhorrent to me. I’m so glad you’re doing well but I’m so sad that you weren’t taken seriously and had to wait so incredibly long for a very basic procedure. Colonoscopies are done in outpatient surgery centers in the US. Probably because insurance pays the facility better than they would if it was done in hospital but that a whole different story 🙄 Sending you all the love and good vibes. And also wishing there were some better middle ground between our medicine and yours. It should be so much simpler!

    • @tylerandtodd
      @tylerandtodd  Před rokem +5

      THIS!!! I think the nuance that often gets lost in conversations about healthcare is both systems are broken…having a hybrid of both seems to be a way better option. Having Public health so even the most vulnerable have free access is incredibly important, as is allowing those who are willing to spend their resources to have a faster response time (provided it doesn’t take the place of those without).

    • @alyadams6388
      @alyadams6388 Před rokem +6

      @@tylerandtodd a hybrid with a stronger emphasis on preventative medicine (annual checkups, labs, dietician assessments, etc) in addition to access to mental healthcare (why don’t we get those kinds of annual checkups?!) would be my ideal. That should all be basic fundamental coverage & we pay for insurance in case something big happens… but the insurance company shouldn’t be able to profit off of its members & the extra funds should be put back into the system. Not to mention they shouldn’t be able to deny anything a physicians deems necessary- maybe have a checks and balances system of being able to question a physician if they’re consistently over-prescribing, but treat the dang patient first. I learned recently that it takes a minimum of 90 days to actually get someone off of heroin. But most insurance companies will only pay for 30 days (IF that). The entire system is like banging your head against a wall- if the wall could also take your money 🙄

    • @samanthawright8830
      @samanthawright8830 Před rokem +2

      It also matters WHERE in Canada you are. The East coast healthcare system is in rough shape compared to a lot of Canada. I’m in Ontario. Also don’t have a family doctor currently, but was having health issues and was able to see a doctor at a clinic the same day I decided to see one. He ordered tests, some of which were done that same day and all within a week (including results). Had follow up and a referral to a specialist with an appointment booked for next month. Whole thing was about four months from origin of issue to now.
      I know my story would be different even if I was in northern Ontario. I don’t live in a big city but I am in the southern part of the province. I have not had to travel more than half an hour for any appointments and nothing cost me anything because I have prescription coverage with work.
      So the private versus public healthcare debate is even more nuanced than “if you want to pay for it”. I technically could afford to pay if I had to, but due to where I live that will likely never be necessary for me.

I'm also in Canada, and a few years ago, I started having strange bowel symptoms and my doctor said "it's probably nothing, don't worry about it." I insisted on doing a colonoscopy. I had four pre-cancerous polyps and the doctor said they were fairly large. If I had waited, it might have been more serious. Your video also is heartbreaking because it shows how much the healthcare system in Canada has deteriorated. It is so difficult to get treatment now--wait lists are long, millions don't have a primary doctor. This is not acceptable.
