Otto Apocalypse from HI3 is well written villian. He played with people emotions, experimented on kids, tried to destroy NYC, etc all to revive Kallen. However, he never once made excus for his actions and planned out a lot of things, good and bad. He cured the plague 500 years prior by experimenting on thousands of sick people. He was "evil" not in the taking over the world, he was evil due to "ends justify the means" character.
Let's go against them with their own logic.
If you like Aventurine, you support shady company practices, you support working people to death, you support taking the freedom away from people, and you support forceful methods.
If you like Ruan Mei, you support messing with natural life. If you like Kafka, you support senseless murder. If you like Dr. Ratio, you support looking down on others. If you like Asta, you support spending money that was earned from a shady organization.
There's a lot of characters in HSR that are full of flaws, and I like them as characters as much as I like the good guys like Argenti, Luka, Serval, Natasha etc. They feel real to the world within the story. At this point, I think people are complaining because they're seeing a reflection of themselves that they don't want to acknowledge.

1. Sparkle is a Masked Fool. Every instance of a Masked Fool mentioned in game is negative. These are people who will do anything in the name of a joke. If you meet Aha in SU, they references an instance where they stayed on the Express in disguise while Alkivi was alive and blew it up. People DIED because of this and Aha finds the incident hilarious. Simply put, Sparkle is supposed to be a jerk. I'd say it is debatable that she is racist because it is far more likely she's just trying to get under Aventurine's skin.
2. People may disagree, but no, Ratio isn't a racist. Everyone saying 'pay attention to why he even brought it up' seems to have not paid attention to the context. Ratio, as a character, is shown to be blunt past the point is considered proper and is very straight forward. He also has little patience for anything he deems foolishness. From the beginning of their conversation, it is clear he does not entirely get along with Aventurine and deems his time to being wasted. Almost immediately, it becomes clear that Aventurine has made what Ratio deems to be a mistake: his bags were search through and he admits to losing money and stones. Ratio seems to only be angry about the latter as among the latter was Aventurine's own, one he apparently needs for his protection. His species isn't brought up for no reason. It's brought up because Aventurine is treating the matter like a non-issue and Ratio brings it up to make a point: it IS an issue because Aventurine does not actually have much political power; his stone clearly is important because of that. Considering his personality, Ratio is meant to be coming from a place of concern. He just has the emotional capacity of a rock so he sounds like a jerk until he apologizes (something the game has implied thus far he rarely does).
I also feel like a lot of people just don't understand the words Ratio is using. Ratio calling Aventurine a thrall is not an insult. It's pointing out a fact. A thrall is a slave. He's literally pointing out that Aventurine is a slave and criticizing him for not taking something serious to his wellbeing seriously.
3. All these people are hypocrites. I highly doubt any of them give a crap about all of the other characters who are canonically murderers.
oh damn the way you put it literally dwarfs every try i've made to attempt to explain it. i especially love how you explained ratio's care for completing the task properly, thereby using Aventurine's status as evidence of how he needs to up his game and stay on top of things before he finally get EXECUTED like he was meant to be before he joined the stonehearts. Ratio obviously doesnt want Aventurine to die, at least not in this way and so he is using Aventurine's status to remind him of his situation!!

to me Sparkle doesn't even seem like a villain or EVEN an antagonist... she just seems like Chaos incarnate. She has her own agenda but she did give the MC warnings about the TRUE way Penacony works and even give us shit for not paying attention and be careful around suspicious people (including herself because again, she's chaotic and has her OWN agenda. She doesn't like lapdogs or yes-men and makes that VERY clear when tearing Aventurine a new one. In other words, to me, she's a PERFECT Chaotic Neutral character.
People need to understand that the character is supposed to be a "bad guy", usually bad guys would say or do horrible things, that also includes harm and racism, Yes sometimes a villain are design to be hated, like I despise Mahito in JJK, But was he a good villain? Yes he was. And here's the thing, I don't know if you know this but Kafka is also a killer, So I bet people won't say anything about her on what her occupation is, people will only care more about her looks rather than what she does, so be aware, if you're offended over a character's personality, u can not like the character, end of story, and move on.

Dr Ratio and Sparkle being "racist" is what I would call worldbuilding. Oh these guys hate Sigonians? Why? What have they done? what's their history? why do they have this reputation? 1 single piece of dialogue opens up so many questions that have potential for future answers. It's weird because Aventurine has a slave tattoo on his neck, and I think that sigonians were typically slaves? I forget where I saw that but I think it's a racial thing. Those stereotypes are ACTUAL stereotypes for them and Aventurine doesn't even represent the culture at all so Hoyoverse just took an actual issue and downgraded it for fun. Sparkle is not a "good villain", shes part of a bigger problem with Hoyoverse and how they handle racism, usually sprinkling it in for their own sake.

@@blairwilliams3311 I understand your point, but personally, I've read a few great characters/stories that are, and address racism//discrimnation in a proper way (ex. The Great Ace attorney). It's all dependant on how it is executed in the narrative. If someone has a genuine problem with how sparkle was portrayed along with that scene, then that would be valid criticism imo, since mihoyo already has problems with colourism/orientalism

I haven't read Berserk so I can't really say anything about it but isn't that the point?? It's meant to be an EXTREMELY dark book with little respite or peace. Imo that just means the moments where Guts gets to relax or make genuine connections hit that much harder. People seem to forget, that this takes place in a fantasy setting. And in fantasy, the concept of "evil" races is as old as time itself. Think of Orcs, Drow or many antagonistic species in sci-fi stories. Writers have used this trope for ages and the best of them subvert expectations with it.
Aventurine has been introduced to us as being manipulative, vain and rather cold blooded. Traits that are being connected to his origin. And the connection they drew was pretty on the nose. I'd say that this was done on purpose, to give Aventurine the chance to be more than just what his species dictates him to be.
It would be a rather classic setup to an arc for a character that is perceived as "evil".
And on the other side, if it turns out that this isn't the case and Sparkle simply is prejudiced against him, that's "good". That means that this fictional character has flaws and by that more depth to work with story-wise.
There are so many real life problems out there and people waste time with stuff like this. It's sad.
I genuinely don't understand why people will hate any mention of bad things in media. Do they think that "fantasy" means utopia with no sorts of societal problems to speak of?
@@octirius2819 I think one mayor issue is, that the players who take issue with this, have headcanons that are too strong.
It's like an extreme version of "never meet your heroes", because in this case, the "hero" is just a result of the player's delusion.
The other issue is, just as you say, even fantasy worlds (at least the good ones, if you ask me) have bad/evil things happening in them. These stories are written by people in the real world. A real world with troubles and problems, of course some of that influence will make it's way into a work of fiction.
Those who get offended by that "truth" seem to just lack the ability of critical thinking.

Theory on the companion quest (Im just copying from what I saw online lol) :
Contain spoiler on the main quest, and speculations on characters' identity.
There are three cases presented by Sparkle and all these cases were actually just metaphors Sparkle used to give hints on information of the characters in the story.
In the first case, there were three suspects. The one who lost an arm is hypothesized to be Aventurine for he had lost his stone (the blessing from Qliphoth). The one who had the face ruined is hypothesized to be Acheron for she had made up her identity as a galaxy ranger. The one who had the leg broken (mobility issue) is hypothesized to be Firefly because she's on life support in the medical cabin (can't go around easily). The murder (truth) turned out to be the one with the leg broken. Which is hypothesized that Firefly has great power that she could rely on (to commit murder).
The second case was basically just the victim unalive itself and that anyone could be the murder (in the story there's no specified murder as you can choose anyone and it'll still work). Which is hypothesized to mean that Robin's death had lead to speculations from every faction.
In the third case, what is important is that living people is used to pretend as dead body. Which is hypothesized that Firefly and Robin's death were both faked as a part of some plan.
Additionally, Sparkle told Aventurine to make friends with someone who can't talk, which dead people also can't talk. That led Aventurine discovering Robin's dead body.
Just some interesting theory I read online. (If you feel scuffed reading it, it's because I translated it.)

Sparkle had nothing to do with Firefly's death directly. The Trailblazer also only knew Firefly for like a day and she was sus the entire time.

if you're genuinely interested in hoyo villains, you should surf otto apocalypse's lore from honkai impact 3rd. contrary to popular belief, his path is not as shallow as what people made him to be. all of his choices are nuanced in complexity. he's a villain i enjoyed following a lot.

Speaking of adam there has never been a better example in recent times of how to destroy a character. He was supposed to be the fallen hero who mentored blake in her way of fighting and life.
