Fujifilm is back at it again with a new flagship Super Zoom digital camera, and we got a chance to flog it all day and night. The Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR is the successor to last year's Finepix HS10-a camera that left us with conflicted emotions. The pomp and circumstance engulfing the new Fujifim Finepix HS20 EXR is its-yes, you guessed it-brand new 16-megapixel EXR CMOS sensor. That means we get Fujifilm's EXR shooting technology merged with a Backside Illuminated Sensor, and image and video quality becomes the hot topic of this review. Not only did Fujifilm cram a new sensor into the Finepix HS20 EXR, but the camera now offers SDXC card support, a higher 12,800 ISO cap, and more pixels in the LCD. That's about it, compared to last year's Finepix HS10. Therefore, Fujifilm did not improve upon our suggestions riddled throughout the Finepix HS10 review, so many of our shooting-oriented gripes were relived yet a second time. The Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR is an odd duck, so take a leap into the pond, shall we?
I have always thought, as a real novice, that if you shoot ANYTHING at full zoom it is mandatory to use a tripod.
Also, handling a camera as if it were a power tool or hot potato will yield the results you mention. Slow down, treat the camera like a lover and you WILL reap the rewards with it.
Very fair review. I purchased the HS20 for stills photography and it is absolutely stunning, I am not concerned about video so much. That said, I have also made some perfectly acceptable videos, but definitely not it's strong point.
The low light performance is amazing, and the EXR modes really do work, I strongly recommend this camera to any one wanting the best stills quality from a bridge camera with excellent manual camera control.
I'm glad I saw this review. I'm also glad that most of my photography is still images, typically with a tripod. Looks like I bought the perfect camera for my needs! I've only ever owned two other digital cameras. The first was a pile of rubbish that broke the day after the warranty expired and the next was the FujiFilm S5700. Brilliant Camera, but lacking for my needs sometimes. 4 years later I got the HS20EXR and I'm very happy with it. I think it'll be a long time before upgraditis hits again
I have had this camera for quite some time now and I LOVE it ! It's easy to use and the pictures come out great !

@poatatoecouch7 it comes with a kind of "adapter" in front of the lens, but you need to buy a 58mm fisheye. And the lens itself doesn't help on focus in video mode. That is a setting issue and there's a way to fix it, just search on google or YT
I bought the camera and dust was under the lens in two weeks! I returned it and got another one and dust was under the lens in two days! It's a nice camera for the money. But to think how bad the dust would get over time and the effects on the auto focus? So returned it and went with the Nikon d3100.
this is a pro photography opinions. this camera is for a beginners,so some of you last issue is some kind of pointless (but i agree on all what you've said). If you take an overall look,for such price,it kinda value for money, especially for people that are turning to photography.

I ended up with the Olympus E-PL1. Its a older model but has a great features for a beginner.
@infosyncvideos Well if Fuji manages to resolve that overheating problems the only con for this camera as far as I'm concerned would be the manual zoom and its inability to be used silky smooth as it should do and ADD-ish AF in video recording mode...
Lynxtpm, i went to that website and I saw the Sample images.. Your right they dont look sharp... But if you go to Amazon and you put Fujifilm Hs20 there is going to be some MUCH BETTER IMAGE.
Video quality is not that bad as you say... If you put it in AF mode centre it will look just fine...
Very good review... Coincides with users review on Amazon regarding focus problems. Bridge cameras are meant for good picture and video performance, if they lack in one then they not worth buying. I own a Canon SX 30is and I think it out performs all other bridge cameras in over all features
@jerro95 The lenses are fixed. It does have manual focus, continuous focus and selective focus.

@CSUnicorno That's only really an option if you want to use an advanced camera like that and *NEED* the photo quality... Superzoom cameras are fine for most other things.

Have you experienced overheating problems making camera turn itself off? Another question is would you recomend Nikon P500 over Fuji HS20?

That's what most of us would do, but in that price range you won't get any dslr that will give you that long range telephoto or that wide angle. That amount of lenses would be very expensive. What I saw in the videos is that if you want to use the end of the telephoto range on video mode the stabilizer goes nuts, just like on a Nikon P500. Tripod is a must have. I want to see the images on the full review to see how good they really are, and if it's better than last years HS10.
@CSUnicorno Well, that's a problem. For the same price you can only buy the body of the cheapest dslr. With the lenses you easily triple the price. I myself want to buy a DSLR camera but it's harder to aford. Reffering to the HS-20 I am very disapointed that Fuji opted to go for a comercial 16mp rather then a profesional 10 mp or 12 mp. I'm genuanly woried that all the moving parts (manual zoom, manuan focus, tilting LCD) will start to give after a year or two of intense shooting ...
By the way Canon SX30 has RAW too. Get CHDK hack for it and it will give you many more features than any other camera in its class.
nice but what you failed to inform here and in your written review is that in all EXR modes apart from High Resolution the pixel count drops from 16 to 8. the output image is still excellent but folk expecting full resolution across all modes based on this review might be slightly disappointed.
is there any digital zoom?
If you are still considering a camera I can't comment too much on all of the cameras however Fuji have the HS30exr which is an upgrade on the HS20 so I'd go for that if you decide on the HS20.

@infosyncvideos Could you recomend Nikon P500 as an alternative? Or even Fuji HS10 being an older and much cheaper model?

It looks like there aren't so many differences from one model to the other.
I've seen pictures from both models and yes hs20`s are bigger, but not better as I see it.

Which camera would you recommend: Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR, or Sony HX100V? Also, when are you going to review the Sony HX100V?
I've been taking a look at a few reviews over this camera and I compared images of the same places taken with both cameras and my surprise was that the hs10 has sharper images and less low end noise. I think that the HS20EXR isn`t worth that amount of money while the HS10 is still around on the shelfs. You can get it for less than 300€ in most europe. Check the images on photographyblogdotcom and you will see what I mean.
@WHK97 First of all, better than all the cameras you mentioned, you should get a DSLR .. Second, if you don't wanna get a DSLR then I think I'd recommend the Canon SX40 HS cuz Canon are the best in Cameras overall and he was talking about how good the SX30 was, how about the brand new SX40 then? Hope this helps ...
@eletrizity23 Agree, but name a DSLR for the same money. The HS20 is worth the money just for the lens.

You showed that it has a 'B' bulb mode... however if you can select the shutter speed up to 30 seconds ... how much longer does the B mode allow?
Reason i ask is that i have the S100FS, which has up to 30 secs shutter... but a B mode that only went to 30 secs as well... How Dumb!

Great review. Can you recommend a bridge camera which takes good video? As you say, the video focus on this camera renders the finction unusable, certainly for wildlife vids.
I don't know what you have done with the zoom??? Mine is working perfect!!!

@Ladislavezr no doubt! go for canon or nikon.. sure this fujifilm is quite fun to use.. but practically speaking.. having a canon or nikon entry level dslr is way better than this camera.. tried the fujifilm and I hate the electronic viewfinder..
I'm yet to find any bridge camera that can do it all.

@tripleL914 money wise! i'll rather go with an entry level slr on canon/nikon.. tried this camera.. the electronic viewfinder is awful.. plus you can't change the lens. Even in auto mode.. canon or nikon is better.. how much more in advanced settings?

@infosyncvideos Really? the FF comes with CMOS sensor...an it's litle bigger then sx30is CCD. sx30is image quality is very low.
@infosyncvideos How about the Lumix DMC-FZ100? Is that not a better bet than the FZ40? How do there still images stack up against the HS20?

Hi, have you switched the "focus check" to off?. Go into the menu and it's on P4 of the "set".
It's still a crap camera but I've found this helps a little.
did you ever have any issues with manual zoom in general? Ever find it was finicky or you wanted electronic zoom?
can you adjust a fisheye lense to this cam and does that help the poor focus in video mode?
Is this camera support for CZcams live using obs software?

Great video, but i'M stucked on somethings. I'm trying to lock AF/AE but it's still changing automaticly while recording or shoting photos. Can you explain how we can lock focus & light lock?
In all fairness, I'd buy a camcorder if I wanted to take high quality videos. I always remember that a gadget is either really good at one thing and bad at another or mediocre at both.
@ztarz092 Compare the zooms. The HS20 is mutch better for pictures.

@krunal467 If you want a small pocket camera, Sony's DSC WX5 or WX9 give excellent results. The 1080p video is considerably better than my Fuji HS20's and the point and shoot 'super auto' mode gives perfect stills time and time again. It's the best camera I've ever owned. In fact, it makes complete nonsense out of carrying around a large bridge - or DSLR.

I am stuck between the Sony HX100v, The Fujifilm HS20 and The Canon Powershot SX40 HS. I do not really care about zoom capabilities but i do care about features, performance and especially IMAGE QUALITY. I am not a huge fan of using AA batteries but this review said that the HS20 lasts 3 days. PLEASE HELP. I do not no anything about photography and i am stuck.
