@ashleymartin6521 No his point is very much the reason. Southage has dined out on luck. Yes that happens a game here or there. But the point is it's on the back of poor selcection, tactics prior to games, and during games. A disingenuous win percentage boosted by favourable draws he struggled to get through. A team vastly under performing and hung out to dry by them out of position. Tried experimenting wildly with a player who isn't a midfielder without runners to justify that attempt. That doesn't instill confidence in the modfielders who then step in. The midfielder we ended up with he did a u-turn on after being nudged to do so. He has a dire win percenrage against top 10 teams (sub 35%), a win percentage also bolstered by the relatively new Nations League, of which they've then been relegated. He has failed to make the big decisions when it counts REPEATEDLY. But yeh, a win percentage is worth a knighthood 🙄 Apply any context and it falls apart. Some past teams went out earlier rounds against World Class teams, which SG has never faced, not even the Spain team that just dominated us were better. No ones saging hes an A hole, but his lack of ability to learn from his own errors, and in fact, get worse, speaks volumes. And thus fallacy that hes made players wnant to play gor England like it was a standars for decades, no, it was momentatrily a problem with rival players. Thelose players had moved on, he didn't have to do sh for that to disipate. Yet the previous mentioned players still played better. Context matters ALWAYS. NO ONE is asking for a given cup, it's the lack of plan on the pitch which hinders us more than helps. Theres no plan B, C, or D. He was evidently tactically inept, for ALL THREE tourbaments. As soon as we come across a team who are just as capable, we didn't just lose we got doninated, bar the gane against France, which SG himself STILL cost us by not making the right calls. The end

As a welshman, I know where you coming from. During Qatar, after our first game, Bale should have been dropped. He was a world beater on his day but he was shot to bits in that world cup.
When Southgate played Kane in the final, it wasn't till Watkins came on, that England actually started threatening Spain and when England scored, I thought that was it, they would score another one or two but then just sat back.
Stones, had a good game, and there was one instance, he grabbed the ball and ran into the Spain half. The Spanish players where all over the place, why wasn't stones doing that all tournament??
Personally I was gutted that Southgate has resigned, only because I don't think they would have won anything under him. A Scots perspective here. The only time in the last 50 years I have been fearful of England winning the WC or the Euros prior to Southgate being in charge was 1990. In the last 3 tournaments I have felt that England were absolutely serious contenders to win. In all 3 tournaments this feeling was increased when the draw opened up for England, big time. The only reason England haven't won at least one of these tournaments is down to Southgate's lack of courage. Cowardly in his tactics in all 3 when the big games came calling.

The part of this narrative I keep hearing that is conveniently left out is that the "improvement" is only on paper, in terms of the story it is the same old story, we get beat by the first decent team we face. How is struggling past Columbia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Denmark etc and losing to Cech Republic, Spain and France an improvement? In these tournaments we have had 1 good win against the Germans who let's face it where not an amazing Germany team and a win against a bang average Netherlands side, those where our best wins. Where is the improvement? same old story, going out in the first tough match up. If anything it is a regression given the quality of football we played.

That being said there is no way that our players have less quality than any other European team on an individual basis, so the only thing that can be pointed out as not working is the tactics!. We should be playing that quick passing attacking play that Spain played but we just looked like we’re completely disjointed and extremely defensive!. The quality of the players alone got us to the final, look at the teams we narrowly beat along the way, all better teams than us but with weaker personnel, then we met Spain who are level par personnel wise, but with far superior tactics and style!.

They have come very close in recent years, and I give Gareth Southgate much credit for restoring that hope. I think they missed a big opportunity in Euro 2020(1); if they had won that they might have approached the last two tournaments with a different mindset and belief. It is deeply disappointing; they will have to start all over again, but I am not going to throw mud at Southgate, he did his best, but it wasn't good enough to win a trophy. I wonder how Holland supporters feel, they have been in 3 WC finals and lost all of them.
