  • Naas Botha was a rugby genius and the greatest flyhalf and match winner South Africa has ever produced. In his last season playing first class rugby, Naas scored 5 drop goals against Natal in a Currie Cup game, seven years before Jannie De Beer did it against England. In total Naas scored 210 first class drop goals. Legend.

Naas het 7 Curriebeker-eindstryde vir Noord-Transvaal gewen. In die 7 eindstryde het hy in totaal 100 punte aangeteken. Dit is 'n rekord wat nooit verbeter sal word nie!

Don't understand why teams don't go for them these days - probably to do with being seen to be playing 'entertaining' Rugby (even though people obviously love it!!) Nobody questions sides kicking over 7 penalties in a game so why not Drop goals? The drop goal is by far the more difficult of the two.

Thanks for posting. We were in same grades in school. He was the best in the world but because of apartheid, the world hardly noticed. He was the one individual that caused the world rugby rules to change (through doc Craven). He caused the try (3) points to be increased to 5. All for the sake of motivating running rugby. For all of his opponents, he was the most hated player out there because they always lost, but for us the Blue Bulls fans, forever the darling. A points machine like no other. Since today his skills were unmatched. Long live the legend Naas Botha. Remember those were the days of amateur rugby and no money involved until Naas stirred the bureaucracy by signing a contract aboard. The SA rugby union wanted to crucify or ban him, because they knew that it would create a president. It did and the rest is all history. Naas jou doring ons bly trots op jou. Ters.

Such a shame that SA doesn't utilize this more in our game, so often were unable to capitalize on possession in the opposition half and this would be an amazing counter to that, Rassie and Nienaber should add this to their gameplan just like they did the box kicking, if after 3 or 4 phases it's evident we're not getting anywhere take the three points via a droppie and break the opposition that we, we clearly have the talent.

SA needs to change its style of play in future the game will open up for drop goals and running rugby. We scored extremely low this world cup against the top teams like NZ. Actually we need to learn from teams like Portugal who run and tackle. A Naas Botha would be awesome in our side. The drop goal flyhalf also forces the oposing team to run up to the player where a perfect dummy oportunity is presented keep the teams guessing.

He could kick, dropkick, off-load, run, dummy and tackle. His problem though was that towards the end of his career his shoulder's were badly damaged and he couldn't risk tackling like he did when he was younger. He was such a target for the opposition and took some huge late/dangerous tackles and shoulder charges (including by his friend) Morne Du Plessis. His shoulders and ribs took a battering - he was tougher than most people think. His distribution of the ball was also brilliant - he gave some great ball to Gerber, C. Du Plessis etc. Don't judge his tackling based on his last few seasons - where he still won games!
