- Skipjack can either be a major thorn in your side to find and catch or a blast. Here's a quick video to get you started on locating them, the gear to use, and the basics of catching them. A fast action rod with a sturdy tip, braided fishing line, and a smooth spinning reels are a must for tackle. I can do another video on gear and baits if necessary.

I second that. Need all the help I can get. Dont seem to be a whole lot of useful information out there pertaining to skipjack.
Seriously great advice, brother. Thanks for the great content. Congrats on that record, btw.
Thank you for the basics on skipjack. I really appreciate you sharing your time and knowledge. 🦈🙂🐟
Great Video
Congrats on the TN state record/world record skippy...I remember seeing the articles on local news websites back when it happened and when I saw this video title it brought that back to my mind the picture of you holding the record one and thinking at the time, man that is a lot of bait in one fish.
Thanks man!
Hey bro you know your stuff. I found your channel because my wife knows your wife. She was telling me about yall fishing all the time. I am decent at striper fishing and do it every chance I get.
I live in East Tennessee here in Rogersville TN Where is the closest lake/river I could find skipjack? I don’t think Cherokee or Douglas have any! Thanks for help
They changed your links. What st croix inshore? Im looking at the 7'-7'6" med heavy fast rods, and I was wondering your exact recommendation.
Well done. We catch them throughout the spring below the dams on the rivers here in the southeast. The rocky easements along power line crossings are another great spot.
no boats or kayak so bank fishing is all I do. thanks for posting.
Great info man, thanks. I've caught them in Lenoir City and on the French Broad River, but not consistently enough to count on it.
I fish lake crook can i do the freeze dried Way to keep small shad from getting mushy
Would love to see a gear and bait video keep on with the great work
Will do. I'll make one this week.
Very informative video. Thanks for posting. I can tell you've read some Buck Perry -- no greater guide than him. Keep it up.
Without I doubt. That's the foundation of all of fishing. This is the way.
What kind of boat is that you have? What year and how many feet? Is it an alweld boat
It's an early 1990s express all welded aluminum 16'48"
Man I just subscribed. Hello from Durant Oklahoma so I’ll be asking questions about lake texoma and big cats
I was to believe it was a three hook rule am I wrong on that I am making my own and only put three hooks on
Sabiki rigs for catching bait are legal per the TWRA handbook
@@TopKnoxFishing Thank you for replying I just thought it was three hooks. But I will add some more hooks thank you I enjoy your videos
Hey bud Im Roy, I’m a disabled vet in Durant Oklahoma I’d love to get you over here on texoma and set a new record.
I love catching skipjack just as much catching for catfish. Mini tarpon. Lol
For real man. It never gets old.
Cool!!! Appreciate your time n knowledge You mentioned bigger one’s Lil tricky to keep alive how long would you except em to live 10,12 skips 100 gal tank u have and amount of salt u like to add?? Thanks Mr.World Record enjoyed video!! Good hump day
Like a quarter of a gallon of salt
I can keep them for 24 hours or so.
Ok thanks I knew they were tough to keep alive will live all day on hook if not eat Lol thanks for getting back with me
I was waiting on this video but didn't want to be that guy. Lol
No worries
This is a great video! But as you know its not always easy to find/catch bait. I have a challenge for you. Tons of people talk about using chicken with kool-aid or jello. It would be neat to see what you can catch with your outstanding skills but use chicken instead of Skipjack.
That's a great idea!
Your links above are not correct.
They may have changed since I posted this
What weight jigs are you using?
1/4 to 1/8 0z
Why would you not just locate them and use a throw net? Not trying to be rude it is just the first question that popped into my mind. Are you not allowed to use one?
They aren't like gizzard shad. Catching one in a cast net is near impossible.
@@TopKnoxFishing I got you. We generally pick up a few with a cast net when we're going for Asian carp. I normally just buy 25 lb or so at the beginning of every season. If you ever come up to the st. Louis area I'd love to take you out fishing on the Mississippi.
Can you say which reservoir this is?
Melton
Are there in the tarpon family
Very similar. They're known as "the poor man's tarpon"
Im disabled know catfishing is my passion ever since i was a small kid .
But its got to the point that its too much for me catching bait takes me so long if i catch it at all it usually takes me 2 to 3 days atleast to get a fishing trip together bc its got to be so much for me .
I just lost my dad and i need so bad to go fishing and clear my head ya no .
