That was fun! I can strum with concentration. But I can't strum and sing at the same time. I guess it takes practice, practice, practice
Practice, and playing with others. I do 2 jams a month online for Patrons with easy songs. Playing is more fun than practicing.

I watched this so I could teach it to my 7yo great niece, and it was easy but I did not see how it would make the island Strum, but Then AMAZING, when you put it all together with the AIR not played, it all fell into place. I'm not quite sure even what happened and what you did. I really didn't like it much, but then AMAZING in one step I was playing the Island Strum. So I DO highly recommend this tutorial to learn the Island Strum for the first time. (I had learned it 2 years ago, and really struggled with it). You are a magician, Lisa (Or, should I say, "A MUSIC TEACHER!!!:)

You are FANTASTIC!!!! I'm a 70 y/o pianist and retired music educator/teacher who just decided to buy a new ukulele last week and teach myself to play. Thank you for the banana-coconut chant... helpful, since my strumming technique frustrates. I would love to practice more but my poor fingertips - OUCH. I just found your channel and enjoying the lessons. I have one suggestion (as a variation on your fruits, since I live in S FL and grow all of these in my yard) is to substitute pa-Pay-a for coconut. I find that the up strum (pa) and down on (Pay) matches the rhythm pattern, whereas coconut is more awkward as the first syllable is the strongest in that word. Just a thought that might help!

I bored the pants off my family learning this. I spent a couple of weeks walking around the house chanting down, down, up, up, down, up. And incorporating food into the equation always helps!

There are really solid brands available on Amazon. I own the ukuleles on my Amazon Store front - www.amazon.com/shop/theukulelefool - I get a small commission if you buy any of these. Other brands I have played and respect that have entry level kits - Aklot, Donner and Kimise. You might want to think about size. Most adults find the Concert size a good fit. Bigger hands do like the Tenor size. I play with several folks that like the smaller soprano size. Good luck on your ukulele adventures and banana breakfasts!
