    I recommend Starlight Cruise but I don't think you will be happy with any of them, I do think 2 days is much better than 1, Enjoy the ride.
    These are very cool boats, I like looking at boats anyway but these amazed me for a lot of reasons, the history behind them, how they're made, the fact that there so popular, amazing.

    It's amazing how many things can be made with bamboo I was surprised to see the Lacker Furniture was made from Bamboo you would never guess that from looking at it.

      Bamboo flooring is popular now I think, there are lots of bonuses with bamboo but for me never again, hard to work with and if not treated in this environment it only lasts 2 years at the most.

    In reference to the boat with 2 attached canoes. Those people are having a meal (breakfast?) before getting to work. That boat is not only for fishing. It is their home. The live on that boat year round.

      No one lives there full time anymore but your right they were having breakfast, they have to go back to town every few days to sell the catch, there are floating houses as well not sure why these guys picked this location to anchor, if the wind changed they would be up in the rocks.

      I would think it is very deep in places, but hard to say.

      Actually, if this is HaLong Bay, it's not very deep. It is around 10 meters (~33ft).

    how do they build the hull out of bamboo?

    • @worldtravel5044
      @worldtravel5044  Před 7 lety

      The bamboo is weaved flat, then steamed and laid over a mold, when it cools the top of the boat is added so it keeps its shape, It was a round boat like a big bowl I watched being built many years ago.

      what do they cover the bamboo with? I am sorry to ask so many questions but boat building is an interest of mine. I saw some amazing boats built in this area out of plastic from blue plastic barrels that were ingenious. I would love t see some close ups of the boat construction.

      I have been looking for a video on how there made but did not find one, It was a long time ago I saw the show on it, I know they steamed it somehow and covered the boat with banana and coconut leaves to keep the steam in, after it is dry they cover the outside in a natural tar-like substance, the one I was in was done with a fiberglass risen, but the fishing boats looked to be the tar.
      I like this kind of thing too.

      Well have a video on some concrete boats, built out of concrete.

      I think you might be right about the tar. Years ago I read a book by the Frenchman Bernard Motissier who was a famous sailor. He was stranded in Vietnam and was planning on building a boat and sailing home and was thinking about building a boat out of paper covered in tar as he had seen fishing boats there using a similar method. A young couple in the UK built a seagoing catamaran using a wood frame and covering it in a hull made from multiple layers of paper and pitch. they tested it by dragging behind their car and also trying to puncture it with an axe. it was surprisingly resilient. The boat they built was beautiful, it was in an issue of woodenboat magazine. they sailed to Central America in it from the UK. They also made a unique wing sail unlike any I have ever seen.
