- Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Chuck Noll is one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NFL, but no coach can stay on top forever. And during week 8 of the 1991 NFL season, Noll said something after a 27-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks that left everyone wondering if he was all there, because it made no sense and deserves a deep dive nearly 30 years later

My favorite Steelers fun fact is that Pittsburgh native George Romero (of the Living Dead franchise) directed the Steelers end of year highlight films for the NFL during the 60s

💥💥 There was a game between the Steelers and Seahawks in 1983 in which Pittsburgh was 5-2 and Seattle was 4-3.
There was also a game in 1987 vs Seattle and in which Seattle was 7-4 and Pittsburgh was 6-5
Also the super bowl in 2005.
So both games in 1983 and 1987 was more meaningful then the one in this video that you said was the most meaningful game between the 2 franchises.

I was a freshman in college at the time and had a classmate who was a Steelers fan and he said Noll was nuts and needs to retire
It was overdue, unfortunately.
In defense of Noll, I was friends with Carlton Haselrig, who I believe you will see wearing No. 77 on the OL in this video. Rig was Noll's last project. Rig told me in his final season Noll and he would sit down and have one on ones and Noll would pour out lessons he learned as one of Paul Brown's messenger guards on how to play the offensive line. The result was Carlton Haselrig, who didn't play college football, who was originally slated to be a defensive lineman, became an All-Pro guard the following season after Noll's lessons. I know in "A Football Life" Noll's wife Maryanne tells a story that in 1991 Noll himself said he was done. But there was one very notable exception.

Back in 1989, the season where the Steelers lost their first 2 games by a combined 92-10 and still managed to make the playoffs and win a game there, Sports Illustrated described Noll as "The kind of guy who would walk the deck of the Titanic and ask what the dinghies were there for." This reaction of his seems in keeping with that mindset.
The loss to the Broncos was controversial, but, considering what happened to them, it was, seriously, lucky, simple as that.
Something the 1991 Steelers offense had in common with all of the best offenses in NFL history is that if you ignore all of their big plays, their stats look a lot worse.

I'm hiding this one from my dad. He's a Steelers fan and considers Chuck Noll to be the best thing since sliced bread.
Unfortunately, 1980-1991, proved, ruinous.
Did this video really have to be made? In defense of Noll, he's making a postgame statement trying to take heat away from his team and has some stats to back it up- and I say that fully recognizing your point that some of the stats were inflated during garbage time. Neil O'Donnell was making one of his first starts and he's trying to defend him. Nothing more, nothing less. Also- considering in 1990 the Pittsburgh Steelers- with the top ranked defense in football- missed the playoffs in large part because they did not score an offensive touchdown in seven of their 16 games, perhaps putting up the one touchdown here looked good in comparison. I know I watched this very game- remember it for Tom Ricketts jumping offsides on consecutive plays- and though very disapointed with the loss as a Steelers fan did think the offense had shown improvement- even in this game- from Bubby Brister.

You May Not know this but Chuck Noll and Chuck Bednarik had a fight once.
One of the craziest facts, in my mind, about any NFL team, is that the Steelers, from the 1969 season to right now....have had exactly THREE head coaches. To compare that to the team I'm a fan of, the Detroit Lions? They've had EIGHTEEN different head coaches in that same time span.
I know JG9 appreciates people who subscribe to his channel and watch his videos. However, in order to appreciate his videos (and some of my comments) you have to be able to do the following:
1. Watch his videos all the way through
2. Have a rudimentary understanding of pro football history
3. Understand sarcasm
Noll wasn't built to coach in the '90s and it was sad to watch. How on earth did he say his offense was effective?! The Seahawks' defense was schooling his offense all day long. I don't think he should've said the sky was falling, but you have to wonder what he was watching that afternoon.
Four, SBs, got him a, Lifetime Contract, unfortunately, nobody, including, The, Rooney, Family, had the heart to declare him dead.

Chuck Noll Was A Good Coach For The Pittsburgh Steelers He Had Terry Bradshaw At QUARTERBACK The Steelers Won Four Superbowls With Chuck Noll When The Pittsburgh Steelers Replace Chuck Noll With Bill Cowher In 1992 The Steelers Beat The Seahawks In Superbowl 40.
Noll had steadily seen his lowered his expectations as Steelers legends retired. Extended greatness, then mediocrity left them with countless drafts picking late. Also he started out as a bullying prick and did his level best to humiliate Terry Bradshaw up until he realized that approach didn't work on Bradshaw. Only after he toned it a little bit was Bradshaw able to give his best. As it went, and the game had changed, Noll tried to turn it on and turn it off. By the end, nothing worked. He didn't have the thoroughbreds or even the hobby horses to get it done. Same thing happened to Ditka but way sooner.
The, Cowboys-Raiders, drafted, better, longer, even if the end results were less than the Steelers, both, had far greater consistency, no doubt.
Even in their lean years, the Steelers still weren't the dumpster fire that the 80's Packers were, or the 90's Bengals were, or the current era Jets.....

If you look at some of the drafts leading up to the final seasons of Noll... man they are awful.
It started in 1975, the Cowboys drafted well until 1978, and, the Raiders until 1984, unfortunately, the Steelers would typically flame out, it's, inevitable.
Chuck Noll whiffed on a lot of 1st rounders during the later seasons like Tim Worley, John Rienstra, Darrly Sims and Huey Richardson, but he also hit on a lot of mid to late round picks like Rod Woodson, Dermonti Dawson, Carnell Lake, Greg Lloyd and Barry Foster who along with a great 1992 draft under Bill Cowher would turn the Steelers into contenders in the 90's.
In my opinion, the beginning of the end of Chuck Noll can really be traced back to his decision to draft Gabe Rivera over Dan Marino.

Most of pittsburgh's games in 1991 were close
Yeah Just like Tom Landry before him the game also passed him by because the Cowboys of the Mid to late 1980s were terrible unlike the early to mid 1980s. The the same thing with Noll through out the 1980s because there were only a few decent Steeler teams from the 1980s (1982 (due to the strike shorten season) (1983 Bradshaw's final year) (1984 when they made it to the AFC championship game against the Dolphins and Dan Marino) The one thing that I hate Chuck Noll for that he gave the Steelers Neil O'Donnell as the QB because he was drafted when Noll was the Coach I think it was 1987 or 1988 which made the Steelers lose SB XXX to Dallas.
Tom Landry, at least, had a smoother transition out of town, they actually had the, NFL's, best record from, 1980-1983, unfortunately, Danny White was no Roger Staubach, Jerry Jones may have been hated, but, at least, he knew when to move on.

Here's two opinions of mine where I think Chuck Noll was losing it:
1. 1983. NOT drafting Dan Marino and trotting out the corpse of Terry Bradshaw for one final season
2. 1989 Steelers: Yes they finished 9-7 and made it to the Divisional Round (the AFC Central that year was a logjam: Browns 9-6-1; Oilers & Steelers 9-7; Bengals 8-8), but they had a point differential of -61; which included getting shutout 3 times. Oddly enough, Chuck Noll did win Coach of the Year that year so .... yay. And they drafted future All Pro safety Carnell Lake.
I'm, so, glad I'm not alone on this island, Terry Bradshaw stealing, "one last paycheck," was unforgivable, 1982 was a total fluke, no way do they make the Playoffs without, "The, Strike," 1989 felt like dumb luck, and, if anything, losing a close Game to the Broncos prevented a demoralizing massacre to the 49ers, he really should have gone out on a high note.
I'm not sure how much we can hold Marino against him. 25 other teams missed out on Marino, too (the Bucs didn't have a 1st-round pick and the Niners of course picked after Miami--and they were set at QB anyway).
@pronkb000 The only bigger walking corpse than him at that point was, Art Rooney, Terry Bradshaw took it upon himself to act shamelessly rather than honorably, it truly doesn't get more obvious than that, period.

@pronkb000 That's A You Problem, I can't help you, if 1982 had gone to sixteen Games there's pretty much zero chance that Terry Bradshaw wouldn't have finally buckled under the attrition, unfortunately, Art Rooney, not only couldn't see that, he assumed it was still 1978, and, never underestimate what an athlete will do when they've built up equity with an owner, particularly one they've discovered can be easily manipulated, he knew he was done, but, he also knew he could get paid for what he used to be, simple as that.

Most great coaches get a twenty year run, plus or minus two years, then they are done.
1991 Patriots were one of the top 10 worst teams in NFL history.
Right after he won SB 14, he knew, immediately, that the Steelers were done, unfortunately, he kept going a decade too long, as legendary as he was, just imagine they way he'd be remembered today had he walked away sooner.
