I'm impressed that they managed to print quite high quality speech samples! The last time I saw their projects the sounds were mostly lo-fi pulse sweeps. The large printing area must have improved the highest possible sampling frequency significantly.
I was wondering if you could break down how this worked to me
I'm not the OP, but look up Nyquist theorem. Basically the way digital audio works is that it's rapidly chopping contiguous analog sound into chunks, and taking a measurement of each chunk. The faster you do that, the more accurate it is. This matters especially for higher frequency (pitch) sounds, which by nature need a faster sampling rate to capture accurately.
There's a related concept of bit depth, which also impacts audio fidelity, but I have to look that up before I can explain it.
@@jessefrench9322 Yes, I’m aware of different d/a algorithms and filtered pwm could do it. I’m just surprised that the printing resolution (and scanning) was enough. I’ve done several sample playback routines with different kinds of hardware.

It's an invitation to figure it out. All the necessary equipment and knowledge to build this yourself is obtainable, and fairly cheaply, on the web, if not just CZcams.

This makes for an actually really fun, but possibly expensive skatepark idea. There's a constant beat that occasionally changes every few minutes and while boarding, you can just ride over barcodes and add to that beat, while doing tricks around the park.
