Description
The southern mealy Amazon or southern mealy parrot is one of the largest parrots. Its plumage is mostly green with a yellow-green tail and an off-white “mealy” tinge on the back and nape for which it is named.
Its eyes are range-red eyes with white eye-rings. It has blue-black wing edges that are visible in flight and a bright red speculum. Some birds have a yellow patch on the head.
Vocalizations: Call and song
The loud, far-carrying call comprises a raucous series of throaty chuckling and trilling sounds. Like other parrots, southern mealies have a wide vocal repertoire and are able to imitate environmental and human-made noises, including speech.
Distribution and range
Southern mealy parrots are native to Central and South America.
Habitat
They inhabit tropical rainforests, gallery forests, and woodlands. They also frequent crop plantations - a behavior for which they are deemed pests.
Diet and feeding habits
Their diet comprises plant foods such as fruit, seeds, nuts, berries, buds, and blossoms.
Nesting and breeding
Southern mealy parrots are monogamous, forming lasting pair bonds. They nest in tree holes. Females lay three or four eggs and the incubation period lasts roughly 26 days. The nestlings fledge at around two months old.
Behavior
They are social birds and can be found in pairs or flocks and often interact with other parrots.
Status and conservation
Although they are fairly common within their range, population numbers are declining due to habitat loss and trapping for the exotic bird trade. They are also hunted in some parts and persecuted by farmers. They are classified as “near-threatened” by the IUCN.
