this has been asked a lot, i do not think she wants to do it because she most likely eats a certain way and does not want to promote different ways of eating. bc everyone eats a different way
She probably eats quite little considering that she is so skinny so she doesnt want to share her diet because of that

The fact that Saint Petersburg has managed to keep alive two eminent institutions as the Mariinsky Theatre and the Vaganova Academy deserves praise and admiration from every art lover. The result of accomplishing such a difficult task is plain to see here; exquisitely refined ballet at the highest level without jeopardising the education of the ballerinas. Thank you for a wonderful time, I really enjoyed the video.

@@MariaKhoreva First of all, it's a pleasure to interact with you! I feel so happy! Yes, I do have quite a few questions about your beautiful world! Let's just hope I won't come out as a totally ignorant person.
1) There is a frequent misconception about male dancers; according to it, they don't work as hard as ballerinas do. They just need to lift them up or hold them during "pirouettes", and that's it, their job is finished! While I know how ridiculous (and low-key disrespectful) this sounds, is it true that female dancers are "more important" than male ones, i.e. that there's a stricter selection in regards to ballerinas?
2) It is commonly said that if you study ballet, you can dance any other style that comes from it, from contemporary to jazz, but when it comes to so-called urban styles (like popping, locking, krumping...) ballet dancers look stiff and uncoordinated. While I do believe that it's normal that you won't have any natural advantages in hip hop styles, is it true that you have such a hard time learning them?
3) I know that, in past centuries, lines were straighter in ballet: they did not see all the (beautiful, in my opinion) hyperextensions and oversplits we see today. Some say that ballet is slowly turning in gymnastics, that we should go back to the previous, supposedly more healthy aesthetic. Do you have a personal opinion about that?

@@__Tiziana__ Hi Tizania, I hope you don't mind me answering some of your questions. Not sure if Maria has already answered them in another video, so I'll try to keep it brief. As a professional, she is far more knowledgeable than me but I have a background in ballet and dance history. I am also a bit of an artistic/rhythmic gymnastics enthusiast too :)
1. Ballet was invented by King Louis XIV in the 17th century and at first a lot of his 'ballets' were demonstrations of his beauty, posture, deportment etc. Other dancers were more to support and glorify him, which is understandable considering he was their ruler. For the most part after that, men really did fill the role of the lifter. But around the turn of the 20th century, there was this company touring outside of Russia called the Ballet Russes, which was a more experimental. They had a few big stars, most notably Vaslav Njinsky and Michel Fokine, who also choreographed. Nureyev and Baryshnikov after that helped spotlight and create the cult of the male dancer in the mid to late 20th century. Mariinsky Ballet, and other companies, still perform some of these ballets, which I find fascinating.
2. Urban styles developed out of street performers and so came out of mostly self-trained dancers. Ballet has been very codified from its inception. The Paris Opera Ballet school is the oldest in the world, dating back to Louis XIV's reign. Even other styles like Vaganova, Cecchetti, English, and Balanchine which came a little later have a systematic approach to them compared to urban dance. I think given how long ballet dancers spend in these systems, and the fact that urban dance styles are usually encountered later, it would be hard to drop the upright posture and aim for elegance. Especially when popping, krumping etc. Anecdotally, urban dance requires a lot of isolation and being able to jerk (stop and start) parts of your body, which goes against ballet training. I had some trouble with contemporary dance taking up B-boy style for this reason :)
3. Technical capabilities have grown rapidly since the mid-20th century. With better shoes and more understanding of biomechanics, dance is really athletic now. So I would say this plays a part in creating the lines we see now. Specifically though, a lot of people credit Sylvie Guillem with popularising the 'banana legs' look - hypermobile, hyperextended, slender. Her work with William Forsythe is an example of choreographers leaning into the look and capabilities of her physicality. Ballet kind of selects for this kind of body now, given the flexibility and athleticism needed to perform. Personally, I don't think ballet needs to worry about being too gymnastic, it has always been an art form focused around story-telling, but in competition circuits the (arguably misguided) attention to high legs can be a bit obvious.

I think they both had their academic studies from the age of 10-11 at Vaganova. But their mother is an English linguist and she helps them with their English.
Homeschooling in Russia isn‘t a thing (please correct me if I‘m wrong), as in most other European countries it is practically unknown.

@@mathildewesendonck7225 maybe it's not a norm in Eastern Europe but in the West and Central it's not a new thing and it's getting more and more popular these days. It works a bit better than in the US, you have to pass the exams so it's not possible to just leave a child alone and do nothing with their education or force some flat Earth bullshit.

I am always amused how the public seem to have a view of dancers being narrow to a personal life without an education and not given to a professional life in the arts. Perhaps the few book bios published of a few past dancers' anorexia or the movie industry slants a general public notion with never having attended a performance of a major company. I always say make one trip to an opera house to see a major ballet performance as the La Bayadere and even risk attending a grand opera. At least once in your life.

It is something I wanted to do for such a long time and didn’t got the chance when I was little and even if I know I am not going to become professional it is something I really enjoy. Twenty years ago, I attended a Dance Teachers Summer Seminar at the Vaganova School. We visited the Library, where there was a display of costumes and pointe shoes of famous graduates. Unfortunately for me, most of the descriptions were in Russian, with no one to translate. Perhaps a future video would be you doing a tour, and explaining these treasures? (Also, we visited the Abbey and saw Petipa's grave.)
We were given ballet classes in the main studio, and that's how I found out its floor is raked (sloping at an angle, as you would find in theatres.) Back then, it had a wood floor, but very worn. I think dancing on such a rough surface would make you an even stronger dancer?

Vaganova is soo strict though like they won’t take you as you said if you don’t have good enough feet or natural body shape at the young age for the audition. Closest thing to how Balanchine is (since the dancing is so different)

I speak some Russian and I'm so jealous of your English because my Russian is not nearly as good as your English. Your English is pretty close to fluent. I worked in Moscow for 2 years with occasional visits to St Petersburg. St. Petersburg is my favorite Russian city. I've had several arguments with my Russian Moscovite friends who don't consider St. Petersburg to be a real Russian city. I cannot judge what makes a "real" Russian city. I can say that even though I enjoy Moscow very much, St. Petersburg is closer to my heart and I have several dear Russian friends there. It's very funny, my St. Petersburg friends consider Moscovites to be boorish and ill-mannered. It's all very amusing!
