    We drove through Thermopolis in June and I decided I definitely wanted to film there. The downtown has some great old western style buildings and it's right on the Big Horn River. We'll walk in Hot Springs State Park in a later video but for now let's explore Thermopolis. It sits roughly between Lander and Cody and to the East of Yellowstone. -H

    Wikipedia:
    hermopolis is the largest town in Hot Springs County, Wyoming, United States, and also the county seat. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the town population was 3,009.
    "Thermopolis" (ΘΕΡΜΟ - ΠΟΛΙΣ) is from the Greek for "Hot City". It is home to numerous natural hot springs, in which mineral-laden waters are heated by geothermal processes. The town is named for the hot springs located there.
    The town claims the world's largest mineral hot spring, appropriately named "The Big Spring", as part of Wyoming's Hot Springs State Park. The springs are open to the public for free as part of an 1896 treaty signed with the Shoshone and Arapaho Indian tribes.
    Dinosaur fossils were found on the Warm Springs Ranch in 1993, and the Wyoming Dinosaur Center was founded soon after.
    Thermopolis is located near the northern end of the Wind River Canyon and Wedding of the Waters, where the north-flowing Wind River becomes the Bighorn River. It is an unusual instance of a river changing names at a point other than a confluence of two streams. The dual name is ascribed to the mountain barrier between the Wind River and Bighorn basins, obscuring the fact that the river that drains the two is the same. The term "Wedding of the Waters" dates to at least 1934, when a marker was placed at the location.
    Thermopolis was founding in 1897. The town's name is credited to Joe Magill and Dr. Julius Schuelke and is derived from the Greek words for hot baths and city. The name is thus related to the Greek pass Thermopylae where Leonidas gave his life and those of his men to preserve his city of Sparta.

    I stayed in Thermopolis Wyoming in May 2019. I visited there to see the Wyoming Dinosaur Museum. It was fantastic and well worth seeing. They have the skeleton of Archaeopteryx fossil Jurassic bird, the only specimen on display in North America. We had dinner at the Bangkok Tia Restaurant, the best Tia food ever! We stayed in the Best Western Hotel, which was fantastic. It was a truly amazing experience! I recommend visiting there highly!❤

    Lived here in 1980 for the second semester of my 7th grade year. I couldn't believe we could swim outside in January but because of the hot springs pool we did. I have never been back but my goal is to return one day and check it out.

    Thanks for this walk. Really nice town. I'm surprised and pleased by how many smaller towns in your general area have their own museums. Side note:. Since you enjoyed The Martian, I recommend Mars by Ben Bova if you haven't already read it. The wagon ride with your Dad in Livingston sounds fun. Take care.

    Great walk as usual Henry. One question. In the states there are alot of lines that look like cracks in the road. What causes them?

    • @CityWalks
      @CityWalks  Před 3 lety +1

      Interesting. I thought I'd answered this but it's missing. Anyway, I think that's probably from repairs to the asphalt or blacktop. -H

      I will not and I'm not a technical climber so not likely to make it to the top if I were. Also, it's a sacred Native American place which complicates things. It's a very impressive place though. -H
