Fantastic review - and seams to be the only one that compares the FWD and AWD models. I have test driven the twin engine XC40 and was blown away by the instant performance and overall comfort. I am very close to buying but wanted to see how the single engine compared as I've not been able to try one yet. Its a shame they are sooooo expensive here in the UK for the Ultimate spec. I would have been happy with 19” on my XC40, but that’s what it came with on a dealer order. The 20” is an attractive rim, but to me these ultra low profile tires look like something from a horse drawn cart with a ride to match - fine on a sports car but a compact SUV? You would think Swedish designers have never seen pot holes after a bad winter!

@@bosternou96 they aren’t great. I’m waiting for a set of 19s for my winters to compare them. Two problems, though - 40/45 series rims are bad news for curb rash, even with surround cameras. Then there’s ride quality. I mean, I’ve seen some of these ‘slammed rides’ the kids think are so cool, but are almost undriveable. If you want Ultimate trim, you get 20s - nice if you’re young and hip I suppose. I’d take 18s if I could, but the brakes are too big on the Recharge, according to the dealer.

You always make the point about physical temperature control. On my recent cars, Audi TT and Porsche Macan S, I have not changed the temperature setting for five years. 22 degrees summer and winter on synchronized auto. But I agree that any commonly changed operating function should not need a menu to search.

But I use heated seats and steering wheel, almost every morning in wintertime. Turn them on until the seat/wheel is warm/comfortable and then off again. That really should be physical buttons as well. Maybe if I got used to preheating the car via the app, it wouldn't matter - you can do that, right?

Because the C40 has sequential indicators, but regular flash when using hazards. Same as the facelift versions of S90/V90. Unless there's differences for the German market.

I'm not really a fan of Volvo design, so I just watch these reviews as fun and for general car info., because Thomas is just so enjoyable to watch as a reviewer and as an enthusiast. But one thing I noticed here was how many Mini's there are on the streets (which as a Mini fan, I like), and also other small "city cars" like the Smart and Fiat-500. Also - in the UK we normally refer to it as the “Accelerator Pedal”, and that seems equally fine for electric cars as well as ICE cars. But ... very entertaining and classy review as always.

I have a 2019 XC60, and the sunroof control (a real switch) is one of the worst parts of the car. It is a physical switch but move it too far and it opens the sunscreen and sunroof, often covering oneself in rain or snow depending on the season. It looks like that isn't possible with these new models touch sensor and its new behavior, but I would have preferred the same behavior with a physical button.

Tested the xc40 myself - Harman Kardon sound is really just a marketing hype in this car, it sounds even worse than a standart sound in my current vw. May be speakers are good, but there are very limited sound setup options, no equalizer, no way to increase highs and mids. Probably it's more focused on subwoofer... and regarding multimedia - I can't understand all the reviews saying its easy to use etc. I tested the car for 3 hours and I couldn't get used to it - it looks like from mid 90ties design, very limited functionality... othervise the car itself, the interior looks very nice and premium. And on bad quality roads the suspension felt very nice. Sp for me the biggest cons - multimedia, efficiency. And no use of overpaying for harman kardon.

Since i like the look of the XC40 and I think the XC40 is the better choice for a family, plus more headroom at the back, i was going to go for plus XC40 for £450.
However then i saw the XC40 ultimate is only £15 more than the plus a month…
I was about to go for it, then I noticed the wheels are only 20’’… cannot get 19’’.

      Simple C40 core for £350
      XC 40 plus for £450

Other than "appearance"; larger wheels weigh more, cost more and tire replacement will be more expensive....in addtion to the mentioned fact that larger wheels mean lower tire sidewalls and less comfort; albeit with a bit more responsive steering. Bottom line - consider what your priorities are.

Could any owners share their City range ? not going over 60mph or 100kmh?
I have the MG ZS EV, but the range is just so bad. I get only 125miles 20-90%
But I'm looking for something that can do 200 miles 20-90% in the City.
Not to mention all the issues and time spend in the service center for the MG ZS EV. What a bad luck car...

Good work, Thomas. Does the C40 have a built-in sunshade? Or is the sunroof always letting in the light? Also, is the microfiber breathable? Have a Silver Dawn C40 on order here in Los Angeles. But concerned about comfort in Summer sun with "plastic" seats and no built-in sunshade. One pedal driving with dual motor ist ausgezeichtnet!

I think these modern Volvos are just a bit too over-engineered. I miss an old fashon Volvo 245 that did it's job no matter what. Maybe Volvo will someday come to their senses and build a modern version 245 EV.

I think Volvo has lost its way; Only electric soon, that means they will lose the market from the whole of Africa (54 countries), now XC40 fuel powered, XC40 electric (but small battery powered), now C40 (which is actually an XC40) with a big battery. What happens if they decide to create another coupe the size of an actual S40 in the future? Remember the C70 (C means coupe), the C40 is NOT a coupe. Lets hope they eventuallly decided on something sensible.
I must say, the review is tip top, thanks.
