Dan Auerbach: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- April 4, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- The last time Dan Auerbach came to the Tiny Desk he brought a mariachi band (we supplied confetti cannons). That was our 500th performance at the Tiny Desk, with Dan playing alongside his band The Arcs.
This time out, we have a different kind of celebration - and an explosion of talent - as Dan brings his Easy Eye Sound Revue to the Tiny Desk. It's an abundance of gifted musicians who have all played with a long, long list of legends, including Elvis, Don Williams and John Prine. Their set recalls a time and sound from the '60s when southern R&B, including Nashville, was a force.
Midway through the four-song set (that includes tunes from his 2017 album Waiting on a Song), Dan introduces a powerhouse: the seasoned but relatively unknown blues-and-soul singer Robert Finley. The husky voiced gentleman, with a giant smile and magical charisma, is heart-winning and heart-warming. It's remarkable that this legally blind singer is only now getting the attention he deserves. Hopefully this inspires you to go digging to hear the album Robert Finley and Dan Auerbach released at the end of 2017 called Goin' Platinum.
For those of you who saw the recent Tiny Desk Concert from fellow Nashville musician John Prine, you may remember John telling tales of writing songs with Pat McLaughlin in the morning, going to town for some meatloaf and then recording the song by day's end. Well that's Pat on the mandolin here in this Tiny Desk set. His playing is both astonishing and low-key. The small band for this stripped-down version of the "Revue" is fleshed with Dante Schwebel on guitar and Russ Pahl's resonator guitar sounds.
Dan Auerbach is a master of ceremonies, a community maker and a great songwriter. His world is one where it's hard to tell if this pool of talent has gathered around to join Dan, or if he's managed to reconnect some old magic in hopes of going along for a great ride himself. Either way we win.

I wish i could know his name
@@Albyyy31 Pat McLaughlin
pat mclaughlin
Dan asked for extra sauce on his mandolin player
He used to play with John Prine
I think it’s really cool dan brought back bluegrass and scurvy
Best comment on CZcams ever
He’s was the man for the job.
You should check out Billy Strings
💀💀💀💀💀
Clearly you havent heard Brushy One String
dan auerbach looks like he’s lived a thousand winters.
he always looks like he has the bends
Hahahah. This comment got me dead.
Most likely seen a lil snow in his day
And survived the long night.
Philosophical or BullShit? Im still trying to decide.
I miss the Keys with all of my heart, but those songs and albums will always be there to rediscover years from now. I like what Dan is doing with his success though. Spreading the wealth and making good music with a bunch of people I would never have been introduced to if it wasn't for Dan. His new gig as a record producer must be the coolest job in the world. Total creative freedom, riding old knuckleheads and living in Nashville. Awesome success story. Thanks Dan
There still a band
Crazy we’ve had 3 amazing albums from them since this comment
Throwing this comment in since Ohio players was just released. Such a good album
Robert Finley has an amazing voice. I love old-school blues singers.
Robert Finley was great.
When I first listened to this performance, it spoke to my soul. It was very special to my then-boyfriend when I played it for him too. Years later, it's still so special to us. Never in My Wildest Dreams is our song. We danced to it at our wedding. Thank you to Dan, the band, and NPR for sharing this beautiful music.
One of the most eclectic and prolific men in the industry. Can't help but to love Dan!
True, artists like Valerie June and Jim Jones all got connections with him. He’s amazing. Only other person I can think of in the same vein is Jack White. Dabbles in a lot of stuff.
I'm loving this new/old sound Dan. What an amazing job the sound engineers at NPR do to record these performances........
Bluegrass and the blues is kinna dan’s thing since the beginning... And its not “old” its just a genre.
It's a new take on an old sound.... Stay true to your know-all ways keyboard warrior.
Not really, and it actually is and old genre.
yes i know, i was trying to point out that genres dont have to be called old or new. Also, I would say that dan does have mostly blues roots
The way Dan is in control of the pace of this little concert is masterful!
These men are talented for sure, but it's the passion for their art that makes this Tiny Desk performance a lesson in life for me!
Absolutely love this! The raw emotion in Never in my wildest dreams is so captivating
I’ve watched this set so many times love the live version of these songs and now a fan of Robert Finley!
My Sexuality: Dan Auerbach's voice.
I was just admiring Dan's voice, thinking how great it was, then I heard Robert Finley. I have a new reference for the word "relative" now.
Legend has it that Dans played live gigs since before he was born...
only way you can get that good right?
Mandolin guy gets loose with it!
Dan is an excellent writer, musician and has a great voice I just love him, can't get enough of him play his songs every day keep going Dan!!!
WOW! What a performance! One of the best Tiny Desk's!

This warms my soul. I love Dan Auerbach so much!
I remember seeing Pat McGlaughlin at the Big Apple Cafe in Puryear, TN back around 1986. Great to see him still kicking it.
Having listened to the album a thousand times I can't help but love the acoustic evolution. There is music in this day and age... You sadly just have to look under rocks.
Never in my wildest dreams is one of my fav songs and they did it hear!!! Love you, Dan
I heard that Robert Findley song on the radio the other day and it blew my mind. So glad he made an appearance here. That's just about as good as music can get.
You are the lost MTV from the 90s.
Thank you for going in on such a cool channel to bring back life into listening to talent.
The best performance I’ve ever seen to this day is the black keys playing at forecastle fest in Louisville, KY back in 2013. I actually went by myself and never had more fun at a concert. If my wife stumbles onto this comment, I’m sorry. Haha
Adam Johnson hi love
I know this comment is old, but I was at that concert as well, number 3 for me with the Black Keys, and I can agree 100% that it was a phenomenal show, best one I've ever seen.
Yes. I’m actually from Louisville, I’ve seen the Black Keys (my favorite band) 3 times here in Louisville, the best performance I saw with them was at Iroquois Ampitheatre, it was absolutely so amazing. The Forecastle show was amazing as well though.
Always been a massive black keys fan i would say they are one of my all time fav bands and i also love this solo Dan music especially never in my wildest dreams i feel i can really relate i have a similar situation at the moment thank you Dan and NPR
inspired by Band Of Horses I think, check the album "infinite arms" ;)
Robert Finley is a great singer! Glad I saw him on 9/20/21
Waiting On a Black Keys record
Potato Channel My life could really use a new Black Keys record right about now
nah, black keys went downhill...dan probably knew that so he started to make good music on his own
Potato Channel but don't make it another turn blue
100% at some point they said fuck it lets get rich and then Dan went on his own and made a bunch of amazing music with a bunch of amazing muscians which I support the whole way. I love this beautiful music right here
Dan is gay now. After his divorce he went black and he's never coming back
Dan is so damn versatile. However, I’d love a Magic Potion-ish Black Keys album or even just another album from The Arcs. Please🙏🏾
Magic potion was fuckin dope
I want a Black keys 60s cover album. Maybellene, Little Sister, This Diamond Ring, How Many More Times, etc
Tyler Crawford I’ll put my butt in the air if it helps get that done. Butts Up
Now that Richard Swift has passed away, I doubt we'll see another Arcs album.
With the direction he is going he could produce a lumineers album
I love everything on these songs. Lyric and music is just perfect. One of my favorites of all time. Dan is an excellent writer, musician, producer and he sings with soul.
Thank you NPR gods
Dan, j'adore ce que tu fais , ta musique est profonde , vraie, et puissante.. merci de ces bons moments musicaux tellement précieux.. Thanks ... Phil from France.. ;-)
Look at these two very sympathetic and wise gentlemen! ♥️
If you ever plan a trip to Nashville, try and plan it around a time that Pat McLaughlin is playing at Douglas Corner Cafe. Always a ROCKIN' good time!
Dan is so amazing!
The passion of this oldy strumming makes me so happy!
I love how this is mic'd everything sorta rings together when you capture it like that, just two mics and a great band.
The Puppet Head there’s four mics bud
I see that now. I still mean what I said, since nobody is close mic'd
Always coming for more of this 🤗
Amazing. Love dan and everything he’s ever done
What a wonderful treat!! Tiny Desk has done such a great job of introducing me to new music from artists I was not or would have ever be been familiar with as well as new music from artists I am familiar with.
I love the keys more than I can describe but I'm glad to see Dan has moved on and is continuing the dream
OMG yes! I love him, thank you NPR. Much love
Dan all your projects are amazing still on this way
Came here after listening to Dan on Rogans podcast. It’s all beginning to make sense now. Dans story is f’ing awesome and inspiring as all get out. He’s everything that’s wonderful about music then and now. Now if u will excuse me I gotta go climb a mountain and dive into some old blues and bluegrass.
omg i love dan SO MUCH
thanks for this npr music
So good! Love the evolution of Dan Auerbach. I would love to see his act up in New England this summer. Maybe a nice 500 person venue. Oh what I would pay for that.
Saw them come through the Fillmore San Francisco. Amazing show. Excited to hear them all over again at Tiny Desk.
Such joy! thank you!
So powerful, Never In my Wildest Dreams get's me every time
I got onto youtube to listen to some DBT before work but this just made my day. Like, reminding me of a faith in things greater than myself sort of made my day.
Thanks Dan! Thanks NPR!
Thank you NPR!! Great music.
This guy is everything.
Once again, thank you NPR/TDC! Excellent in all ways. Thank you for the tip on "Goin' Platinum". Yet another CD I'll be picking up, thanks to the musical exposure you bring to the masses and folks like me. Take Care!
Dan is the man. Such a cool dude
This is fucking unbelievable! Love Dan's writing!
I'd bet Robert Finlay has a few stories to tell
Am I the only one getting a grateful dead feeling from never in my wildest dreams?
Oh my goodness. Its been a few years since ive followed new stuff coming from dan and im kicking myself for missing this. Love the bluegrass!
Man, Robert Finley's voice really reminds me of Richie Havens, and that is nothing BUT a compliment.
Never in my wildest dreams…🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Father and son performances are alway lovely
God, I love this man!
Shine on me has such an ELO vibe. Dan is able to tap into so many different influences and do it well.
He looks like this cause he’s making music 24/7 365.
Beautiful tune. Did not expect that. Will check out their album for sure.
I love this so much!
Get it while you can ❤️❤️❤️

This set is pure elation.

tripp WOOSH
Ultimate musicality! Love it!
This was amazingly enjoyable
Pat is incredible. so into it. great concret
Love dan, but this group is insanely talanted and shows that age means nothing. Honestly, the more age the more appreciation and experience. Just total perfection
I have chills
Rocking the recording studio tan
That old chap they bring on is awesome.. He's so happy
I really enjoyed this music😊
The contagious energy and joy that jumps off the screen from the obvious buzz that these boys are getting from this performance just makes this amazing song hit you even more between the eyes. It's as though they can't believe after all these years such a simple sounding song hasn't been written before and these bunch of ol musos are just grateful they found it first after waiting so long to find it. Lol it was well worth the wait guys one of the best and most feel good songs I've heard in years. Almost reminds of something Buddy Holly could have done had his plane not taken off on that dreadful winter night in 1959.
Lovin these tunes. Lookin for more Arcs.
What a voice!!!
Lovely music I love it ♥
We love you dan.
good for you dan... well played and hella nice players
That Robert Finley is really something!
Hell. Yes.
Bags of talent! And also underneath his eyes
