    Count Egmont was beheaded in the Main Square of Brussels in 1568 after sentencing in the Court of Blood during the Spanish Fury of the Duke of Alba. His crime: feeling responsible to protect all his subjects, not just Catholics. I've just discovered Apollo's Fire. Jeannette Sorrell is over the top wonderful. I'm so happy. Thank you.

    I was noticing this morning the way a violin/viola player was watching the cello section. That’s part of what makes this ensemble so great. They pay attention to each other, not just the conductor.

      I too notice and appreciate this about them, particularly when they are performing as a smaller group.

    I love how dark the period instruments makes this piece sound. You can also tell you all play with incredible passion. This conductor is dragon fire. She reminds me of my old choir director back in university. He could make your vocal chords react before your brain new what happened.

    Finally, an Egmont with clarity of sound and performance. Contemporaneous instrumental timbres and size of orchestra...wonderful!...whooda thunkit? Well done, indeed.

    I forgot to mention, the Egmont Overture has a new meaning for me, I have been researching my ancestry and I found that Count Egmont is my umpteenth greatgrandfather, this is the best version ever!! than you once again, I love looking at your videos

    I only recently discovered this ensemble - what a discovery! They really do play with passion. They certainly are up there with the best. I really love period instruments - as Christopher Hogwood said, it's like stripping off the dull Victorian varnish of a great painting to give a fresh & new appreciation. This ensemble have certainly done this with the 'Egmont' overture! I shall be watching more of themo be sure!

    I remember when you came to the Cadogan Hall, London for the Proms, I was a volunteer and you kindly helped me after the concert with a disabled lady, talking about the theorbo etc., it made their day, thank you so much, you are so kind

    Magnifique d’interprétation et avec une femme d’exception qu’est Jeannette Sorrell qui mène la baguette après de nombreuses répétitions détaillées comme habituellement ! Bravissimo

    I keep coming back this magnificent performance - it is sensational. Miss Sorrell is such a superb director and the extremely high quality of the musicianship of the core AF players has been enhanced by additional top rate Baroque artists who have swelled the ranks of the orchestra..

    Apollo's Fire is one of the premier orchestras in the world, and one of the few specializing in period instruments. In my days as a Classical Radio Programmer and Host, I could always depend on Jeanette Sorrell and this group of musicians! If you would like to hear a pre-concert (or post-concert) lecture on this piece, I have linked to this performance as my highlighted performance of this piece. In the text below my lecture video, I have also linked to a performance by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Thielemann, so you can compare the texture of the original instruments to modern - it's an immediately apparent sound! To hear my lecture on Beethoven, this work, and the interplay between technique and emotion, just click here:

    Personally, i feel the opening Adagio section is a little fast. However, the subsequent Allegro is just right tempo-wise, so i do not wish to be overly critical...

    Tout dans cette version d'Egmont a l'air bon: la chef, les musiciens, les instruments d'époque... Sauf qu'il s'agit de Beethoven, et que de mon point de vue, une interprétation sur instruments d'époque ne rend absolument pas justice à sa musique. L'écoute de cette ouverture m'a laissé de marbre, ce qui est dommage quand il s'agit d'Egmont.
    Je tiens à préciser que ceci n'est que mon opinion et que je ne détiens pas la vérité.

    I came from the furtwängler Egmont overture ... what should I say... sorry misses fire but this Interpretation is too high and fast for me ... destroying the whole peace ... hear Furtwänglers Interpretation ... that is real strength... and you can feel Egmont and the whole peace makes sense ...

    • @jackarcher7495
      @jackarcher7495 Před 4 lety +6

      Well, it's making a lot of sense to me. I suspect there's room for both Furtwangler and Sorrell in Egmont.
