Yes! It is funny cause I am in the cross section of tech and finance. I can guarantee you most people in tech make more than ones in finance, but for some reason it is OK to wear free shirts to tech offices but you have to spend hundreds to fit into finance ones. Bragging rights are quite different as well, you could be making 500k in tech and still show off how much money you saved by being frugal about something. The culture is so different.

I could buy 15 Louis Vuitton bags and I have zero debt and I want to buy it but I still would not! It’s not wise. Emergency funds, retirement, all of that is also important. I have yet to buy a house, that’s important. I see a lot of young women in their 20s spending all their money and it’s scary. Youth does not last, neither do these handbags.

I'm a very frugal person who would, quite honestly, never buy a luxury item in the boutiques. However, I love luxury items and fashion. That's why I love CZcams--I can see everything new out and enjoy all the eye candy. I think of like going to a museum; I'm just a spectator. As an aside, one of the things I've always appreciated about you, Sophie, is that you are the only luxury CZcamsr I've seen who addresses debt and buying responsibly, which is so important.

As someone who is in the younger generation, I'm 24, I'm concerned by the amount of buy now pay later services available. It's so easy for someone with minimal understanding of finances to get in a tough situation. I have some luxury items in my closet, but most of them I bought preloved and I saved up for them. Since they are just things, there's no point in going into debt, in my opinion. I just wish these services weren't so readily available.

Currently I have three items that have 3 installments due too go out in the next month. One order I did send most of it back so I'm now learning how too let them know that I don't owe them £90 anymore and actually the amount ive already paid covers the one item I did keep. So hopefully that process wont be too complex. If you dont mind me asking but how did you get into that debt using the service? Is there a catch i'm missing.

I feel like it’s important to add that it’s not just luxury items causing this new trend towards astronomical debt. I know from personal interactions with friends that people (my friends are mostly if not all women) are purchasing things on credit like trendy home organization items, Cricut add-ons for their “hobby”, and of course the still ever-present trend of pricey cosmetics. It’s utterly ridiculous. Our lives are becoming increasingly more meaningless, so the compulsion to buy things to make us feel better continues to spiral. I feel like our collective future is just heading towards a truly dystopian reality.

I only buy pieces when I can afford it without having to compromise on grocerie and all the household bills like for the house, car, insurance. Even then I try to find it second hand first. I genuinely love the designer pieces I own. Don't buy stuff just to look rich.

I bought my first Birkin in December and used PayPal Credit because it's 6 months interest free as long as it's paid off before the end of the time period. Obviously you have to make minimum payments every month which is 1% of the balance. But I did this because my high yield savings account is giving me more than 4% interest. I have the money to pay off the bag now but don't see the point in paying more than the minimum until the whole balance is due because I'm making money having that money sit in my account. Have done this with other luxury purchases. You just need to be smart about it!

I think a lot of people need to realize is that you have to calculate how much you can spend on things AND still being able to save a decent amount of money. If you can’t buy it, don’t buy it. Even if you can buy a Louis V, Chanel or whatever rich brand bag. Consider if it’s actually worth the hype maybe better invest in your home, or a car or bike for transportation than a small tiny bag.

While we all have those magpie moments of wanting the pretty thing we see, there is a deeper gratification in saving for that thing and then paying cash. Often I find that by the time I have saved enough, something I like better has become available and I am glad I waited. My worst purchases have been impulse purchases. Oddly enough, one of those impulse purchases was a Split It purchase on a popular resale show, Eeeek. Once I got the item, I was regretting my purchase and most of all that I was going to be paying for it over 12 months. It was my monthly regret reminder. Fashion and stuff is good for the soul. When you own it, you feel good. Even so for high ticket items with exceptional quality or quota bags, e.g Hermes etc , the desire to own more of it has become stronger in you emotionally because you feel you’ve gotta have it, the cure to your depressed state thinking you gotta keep up with the social trend of not being left out. Yet the desire to chase to own more of the bags supersedes the need to pay your debts, thinking you can get away for years via instalments or other means of payment as long as you are employed. The crisis now can’t be everted unless a life changing system is in place to change how we look into luxury and fashion.

sophie, thankyou for being so real ♥ here in my country we have all kinds of credit payments, quite easy to set up with minimum verification process. people with poor financial literacy use them for even tiny purchases, so the amount of inhumane debt collectors practice had been through the roof! it's so hard to break the cycle of evil interest rate as well.

Another excellent video. I definitely found that after I joined instagram I was being heavily influenced to buy goods I wouldnt have beforehand. I have a tendency to overspend especially when Im stressed so I am quite mindful of my spending but the risk is always there. I love the preloved market and that is a good avenue for me because it also satisfies my need to be more environmentally conscious with my purchases. I do buy new luxury bags too but I have cut down on this considerably and try to wait a couple of months before purchasing and its amazing how many times I find I actually dont want the item anymore if I add in a wait time.

Luxury goods aren't worth the price we pay for. None of them! What makes them appealing is their price tag which creates a feeling of scarcity. When it seems scarce then we want it. We want something that others can't have. If Chanel bags cost $99 it wouldn't sell in masses. Because it's within reach of most people. Most small to medium size Chanel bags don't cost $99 to the company to make. Think about that... think about how we make someone filthy rich paying them our hard earned income or getting into debt that's going to take some time to pay off. Over what? A bag?

I’m certainly influenced, but more so by people on the street and my circle of friends and my browsings through second hand sites…
As for debt, I’ve never had it or gone into debt for anything… and most certainly not a bag. It’s important to me that I have lots of money leftover to spend on my travels and to invest because these bags, while they may be my life, cannot support me anyway..

I use Klarna all the time but not for credit, only invoice to be paid in 30 days. That way I get the products before paying and I can return stuff and pay only what I keep and I don`t have to wait to get my money back. I don`t have any debt, I pay everything I buy when I`m sure all is well with my purchase 😊

I agree .you get plenty of warning when payments are due .if for any reason you cant pay on due date the customer service are super helpful and and emphatic. You just need to discipline yourself not to order items with different brands at the same time I think that's how some people get into serious debt.

I love the video range you post. You give a smart perspective. There's a chemical reaction in our brain like a high when we buy something new, right? I love my handbag collection but with the huge price increases it's taken the fun out it, really. Social media does fuel it but I also see the saturation and sometimes that actually helps me not to buy. I'm in my 60s and I've have/had the debt and it's a huge mental drag. You are so supportive and well-rounded in your vlogs🌼

Dealing with FOMO and acknowledging WHY I wanted to buy things was the best change I ever made financially. I am pro afterpay/zippay etc even credit cards when people are capable of using them responsibly (because it is possible). Also learning to budget (the budget mom was my favourite), but things like pay raises just arnt possible in some industries unless you get a promotion (which can be few and far between when people never leave cause your overpaid by industry standard lol).
I just got the keys to my first home, which I bought on my own. It was a long way to get here but huzzah!! 30yrs of mortgage debt to go 🤣

You know it is like zara where everytime you get in you will always find sth exciting to buy…. However with luxury items things get serious… I try to restrain myself even by avoiding going to shops or visiting sites…..

I don't even feel excited when I think of lesser savings in my account just to buy a want item. Ppl shouldn't blame others for their own behaviours. Social media might have made it worse but be accountable for your own finances. No one should be in debt for such things. In fact even cars shouldnt be on debt. Only mortgage makes sense... People need to take responsibility for themselves. If I decide to go into debt to buy an object - whatever it may be - that is my responsibility, not yours. You are not to blame! Not to mention that you have always been open about your own debt situation so it is terribly unfair for people to blame influencers, including you. I do use AfterPay for some larger items. Now it seems that people are using it to pay for their daily coffee, which adds up hugely over time! Not a good idea!

Dont go into debt for a luxury handbag, a new phone or some random stuff that you want. Go into debt for a house and MAYBE for your education if needed or a car if you absolutely need one to get to work. The rest is not worth it. Sophie, thank you for giving healthy financial advice to people instead of just promoting luxury.

Good dialog. It has resonated with me because I just finished reading an excerpt about a financial manager in the Bronx who was in the habit of cutting up his (low income) clients’ credit cards in front of them and then putting shards in a large vase in the waiting room. He used this practice as a sort of “shock therapy” and I cannot help but to think that although this clearly has helped people based on his 65% success rate, it is misguided in a way that keeps people impoverished. It reminded me of the juxtaposition of two of my college professors on credit card usage. My college algebra teacher said that credit cards were “evil,” and I do believe those were his exact words. My economics teacher was very much in favor of credit card usage because if you are of course paying them off every month, the value of having a high credit rating can help you immensely in building wealth as well as the security benefits you touched on in this video. Credit cards are really only useful if you are using them up to the limit of an already predetermined budget. Some people see them as “evil,” not because they are somehow morally or intellectually inferior and therefore incapable of “handling it”, but because the pitfall of debt is extremely easy to fall into if one is not only financially literate but also aware of the psychological tendencies involved in desire.

    Hi Sophie!
Love the video! I only disagree with one thing you said. You said you are part of the problem for the general "want for things" that people have and then they might go into debt to get them. Let's say you only do big Chanel haul videos twice a week. Let's say I watch those videos and they feed my need to want stuff. I am an adult. If I go into debt buying everything I see influencers unbox, that is on me, not you. There is an ugly trend now where people don't want to take responsibility for their actions. I have some debt right now and it's no one's fault but mine. I'll pay it off and while I'm doing that, I'll enjoy your wonderful videos. At the end of the day, some of us want stuff and some of us don't need a lot of stuff. It's just how we are wired and it's not your fault. Thank you for making this video. Very informative!

The Klarna payments also add up to quite a lot more than the original sum. Like, they'll lure you with payments at, say, 100€/month over six months and you end up paying 600€ for your item when it was only about 500 € to begin with. Like, they 'hide' their interest in the rates as opposed to saying "We'll lend you the money at 10% interest" as banks would do.

Sm has def contributed to increased luxury buying and increased debt for aspirational shoppers. I’m guessing a number of influencers write off luxury purchases as business expenses. I think that’s how many can afford to shop and shop. Normal people don’t shop like some do with unboxings every single week. It’s nuts and just too much. The last few years there’s been an overconsumption in luxury and now with the recession and inflation it’s hitting people hard. I think luxury purchases will be tanking this year. It’s about time because prices have been out of control and ridiculous.
