  • I built a 4x1 passive mixer, but ran into some problems during the build.

    Thank you for sharing that. It helps counter my perfectionist impulse to know that everything could go wrong.

    I love the enclosure, you always put so much care into these! I have some pcbs left for an (active) eurorack mixer/utility module, let me know if you're interested:)

      thank you so much! i'm not taking in packages at the moment but i'd love to see the schematic/layout if you're sharing them

    Great video. Honestly this is many more times valuable for all the learning from mistakes.

    This was great as always, and your new year comment made me actually laugh. What you were saying at the end about modular mixers lit a lightbulb for me. I’d never noticed the similarity between modular synths and the analog modular broadcast mixers I’ve used! slot in the module, connect the power/buss cable and done! (Eg. Sonifex S2)

    Cool and aesthetically pleasing project (as always). It's going to be interesting to see where this leads (see what I did there? 😀). It was a shame the demo gods didn't align for you on this weeks show and tell 😥. I liked those little discrete synths that @todbot showed - and immediately thought of you and your racks and how they could be another cool sound source to add into your mixes. Anywhoo... Stay safe out there.

      thank you so much! and yeah, that was so weird because in streamyard my video was visible but then it wasn't going out to youtube so i was very confused 😅 you stay safe too!

    I could see how to easily add a Mute switch, but a Solo switch has me scratching my head. Nice video BTW,, thanks for sharing!
    I need to try a filament swap with my next 3D print.

    Im going to use this design as my first DIY project, but Im going to use a small dollar store Lego case as my enclosure because I do not do any 3D printing....yet. Might look into those mute buttons too.
    Chees!!! and thank you!!

    If you connect 2 line level sources to such mixer, with both volume knobs on and only 1 source actually feeding a signal, won't that signal backfeed into the other source's output, potentially damaging it?

    What solder are you using for audio projects?

  • @TooSlowTube
    @TooSlowTube Před 10 měsíci

    Hmm... Looking at the schematic,it appears that if you turn the potentiometers up to full, there is a direct path from each input to the others, so you're wiring the outputs of all your synths directly together. I don't mean to be critical, but that doesn't seem wise.
    I was expecting to see series resistors either feeding the signals from the jack sockets to the potentiometers, or between the wipers of the potentiometers and the output circuit, to provide a degree of isolation. I think 10k is a fairly common value to use for those.
    Do you own a multimeter? One with a continuity beeper is good for checking things like the wiring of jack sockets - plug in a cable and hold one probe against the relevant contact on the far end of the lead, then use the other probe on the socket. You can also use one, with two leads, to check what resistance you are getting from one socket to the next with the knobs turned all the way in one direction or another.

    I've built a few passive thingies like this. I never felt like putting pots on them cuz I'm only using passive boxes for pretty specific stuff - combining FX returns on a Model 1 mixer with one, and some simple boxes to mix synths/etc. that have their own volume knob. But I keep thinking it'd be nice to make an amplified one that had a HPF and gain on each channel. But then I'd want a cue bus. And it'd be nice to have a LPF on each channel, too. And if you've got a HPF and a LPF it'd be nice to have resonance on one of them (or a BPF). And that's starting to get awfully complicated and it's probably more versatile to plug a Midi Fighter Twister into a R.Pi or an iPad with Loopy Pro or Garage Band or something. And my soldering game is not good.

      speaking as someone who used to shake while soldering, you will get better with practice 😺 i also have dreams of a similar, open source mixer project. i like the idea of building them as modules that folks could pull from to build their own custom setups

    Black and yellow is one of my favourite colour schemes. I painted my first Eurorack beauty case yellow with black bee-stripes because, why not? Anyway I’ve found that the simplest projects are the ones I’m more likely to screw up because “it’s so simple, I can’t possibly screw this up, right?”

    • @BlitzCityDIY
      @BlitzCityDIY  Před 2 lety

      that case sounds awesome! yes, can definitely get lured into a false sense of security with "simpler" builds

  • @woosix7735

    yeah, passive mixers are cool, but you have to really watch out for that high output impedance!
    honestly, Professor Lanterman really sold be on inverting op amp mixers, which have some advantages.

  • @carnage77
    @carnage77 Před 4 měsíci

    Strip board is totally unnecessary here, and probably complicated the entire build.
    Also, equal (very low) value resistors should be added on the output of each channel before the output jack .
