    Games like that are better when Derm is on comms. Since GC last year noticed he always finds positives. Talks through effort and intent, doesn’t try to sensationalise. Was genuinely chuffed when Ryan did a thing after mentioning he was quiet the minute before. Big wraps for some measured commentary while we are building.

    This is where we are at. We are 10 times better but still significantly below AFL average.
    I think this game we didn’t have enough leaders on the field. Reid plays better with Yeo, he looked lost without his mentor. Not enjoying the fact we don’t seem to have a game plan coming out of our defensive 50. Apart from 2-3 times we kick out to the left and hope for the best.

    • @BDub2024

      Without a decent ruckman and Yeo, we have the worse inside mids in the league. That's where the games are won and lost. Ginbey is really a half back having to play on.a wing or centre when he isn't ready. Ledwards isn't good enough yet. I reckon Duggan Hunt or even Cole! needed to be in there to provide physical presence in the middle. I'd have Hall in next week. Maybe Culley if recovered or Gaff. I think that the coach will make those changes. Melbourne will smash us as they have the best mids in the game and they are actually physical. Our forwards will get smashed next week. We won't have any defenders apart from Barrass with the other young defenders all injured. Good luck.

      we're a bottom three team obviously. but we're below the tipping point with injuries. yeo and mcgovern have carried us, whereas we haven't had them for last couple of years. If mcgovern is unavailable, then its only barras as a tall defender. Bazzo Jamieson and I think Hedwards are all injured now (5 disposals for Hedwards signals something).

    • @BDub2024
      @BDub2024 Před 28 dny

      In middle BWilliams Sheed Kelly and Reid will be smashed. That's why you need Duggan, Cole, Hall or even Ginbey to try to create physical pressure. Though Ginbey and Cole are obviously more defenders. Eagles rely very heavily on Yeo and without him we're in strife. When Flynn comes in with B Williams and Allen able to play upforward, then it will help the structure. But you take a good ruckman and Yeo out, and you see how below average the Eagles mids are. We all know that.

    I agree with your assessment Alex. The Pies were missing Jamie Elliott, Jordan De Goey, Brody Mihocek, Beau McCreery, Lachie Schultz, and Tom Mitchell, the Eagles also had a their fair share of senior players out. Both teams had the misfortune of loosing senior players through the match with injuries. I really thought the Eagles played well in patches, but they lost clearances at the centre bounces, to be expected with a developing squad. The Eagles were far more consistent this time than when we met last season. I was looking forward to watching the young star Harley Reid. Being compared to Nick Daicos by the MSM was total BS, and unfair, it placed to much pressure on the young bloke to perform. Without appearing patronising I enjoyed the contest. Best of luck for the remainder of the season, the competition needs a good performing West Coast.

  • @Simmo87
    @Simmo87 Před 28 dny +2

    Went to the game. Was fairly happy with the effort, despite the eventual scoreline.
    Didn't have any commentary filling my head with ideas, but as I saw it - our defensive line is actually doing a very good job. Many times today they were helpless against quick clearance from the midfield, but most would be. Mids were below the standard tbh, a few good efforts but totally dacked at stoppage. And the forwards didn't get too much of a look but between them and the mids the opportunity for scoring just wasn't generated. CWood's defence was top notch, so I acknowledge they had some say in it, but they weren't asked to work that hard.
    In short, most problems are just a manifestation of a subpar midfield, which we already know we can't magically speed up in development. Even some of the criticism I've seen about not having a clear plan coming out of defence I think is just another face of the same issue. So, I also sit comfortable too (in the discomfort of seeing our team not represent itself like itself). It's not a big mystery or myriad of problems. It's redeemable with the right approach and a bit of luck.

    I looked at the contrasting factors in this game, and the two sides in general. Collingwood are the reigning premier, we are the reigning wooden spooners if you can call it that.
    Even with Collingwood's outs, they still have a very good core 22 with or without them, they have considerable depth and experience that we simply lacked.
    As hard as it was at times, I genuinely and consciously tempered that with reality that this is a very young side that we fielded today.
    It may sound like a cliche, but I am prepared for games like this, and it is my genuine belief that they will take a lot of learning from matches like this, and that in time it will help these players to develop.
    I do not see us collectively lowering our colours which in 2023, it genuinely felt like that was the case in more than one match last year.
    I do feel that they simply had more experience, more depth, and more weapons to draw from than we had available.
    Feeling very concerned for Gov having worked in radiology and medical imaging, I cannot help but wonder how much punishment this man's ribs can take... this isn't the first time he has had a rib injury like this before, far from it.

    CBA's kinda get skewed in a game like yesterday's because we had about 6 goals in 10 minutes at one stage, but also 6 goals for the 2nd half. So Sheed was in centre for 4/6 in Q1, 6/10 in Q2, 1/4 in Q3, 0/4 in Q4. Was on the wing for 0/6 in Q1, 2/10 in Q2, 1/4 in Q3, 3/4 in Q4.
    Looks like it was a starting 3 of TK, Harley and Sheed, with Rube rotating in, with Hunt and Chess on wings. Change came in the 2nd quarter after the Crisp goal 48-19, Luke Edwards went into middle, Sheed went to the wing, Rube was still rotating through centre but also wing, with Hunt moved back to cover gov. Chess stayed on wing, then in 2nd half Duggan was in all CBA's.
    In one centre bounce we had midfield line up of Jack Williams, Duggan, Edwards, Sheed with HJ and Chess on the wings :/

      We're past the tipping point with injuries considering our lack of depth. I thought it would be a 10 goal belting and was hoping it wouldn't be 15 goal plus. Our midfield is really ordinary when Yeo or a decent ruckman isn't playing. We're having to take from somewhere else which then causes further problems. We've got more injuries now so could be humiliated against Melbourne which is in far better form than Collingwood currently.

B Williams as a ruckman will be smashed most weeks meaning that our mids need to be defensive. But none of the guys have a defensive mindset they're all front runners. They should have had Duggan and some of his defensive colleagues in there really. Take a few key players out and this is what you get. Stay tuned what will happen to our defence this week. No McGovern and there will be no one apart from Barrass to play as a tall defender. So do you play Hough as centre half back? Or Hunt? I thought it was the best game this year from Witherden, Liam Ryan looked much better in the second half and both Duggan and Barrass were good. Harley is a power athlete and I think he will get stronger with improved fitness over the next couple of seasons. The Nick Daicos comparisons annoy me, they are completely different to each other. Comparing to Dusty or even Christian Petracca are more useful but again, Harley has played 8 games. We are still probably a class midfielder short so the draft this year will be interesting.

    Hi Mate
    I like your reviews here good balanced approach, just a comment if i may to maybe get you to look at the reason our windmen are not getting a lot of the football, it was a comment that simpson made a few weeks ago, that the modern day wingmen don't always get a lot of the ball , however they do a lot of running that on the TV you maybe dont notice, so the likes of Greg clark, edwards, sheed even rebin , don't get that many touches, but do a lot of running and even i was surprised when i looked at the eagles stats and notice Edwards is very quick and covers a lot of the ground. that been said Dom Sheed is and will have that foot problem , that will not get a 100% better, so i believe this will shorten his career along with Barass with his spine injury now.

No, obviously not, but you were pretty noble in defeat. That was the performance of a club that’s actually rebuilding. I was frustrated in that third quarter, because it felt pretty even. Margin was probably about right in the end, but it was far from a piss poor performance, like what we saw the eagles do a few times last year. Wow, this was fast, was expecting this tomorrow. It was not going to go well, going up against Collingwood, so this result, shocking at first, was expected. West Coast is still developing, and Collingwood is well developed.
    I am also quite worried about whether Adam Simpson is worried about his careers that he is making dodgy decisions. He seems to be trying to push players to stand and perform when they haven't proven themselves in premiership level. I am not saying fire him, because at this point the talk of dismissal may be what's causing the problems. People have short term memory and will probably treat this as Eagles falling away for the season, media in the West is brutal. This will be an extraordinarily long week at Lathlain Park.

      I think you're exagerating the talent in the team. The injuries are really hurting us, as we lack so much depth. Without a good tap ruckman and Yeo, we will get smashed. Sheed Kelly Ginbey Reid just won't cut it. Really Duggan should be in there when Yeo isn't there. That's obvious. Even another player like Hunt with size and experience. Simpson has had a great year coaching, but the injuries have tipped us over. We could get humiliated at home against Melbourne. A real concern as their midfield and clearance players are number one in the league. Their defenders that control the air, so we may struggle to kick goals as our forwards are below standard. If McGovern is unavialable, then there is no one to play the second tall defender. Bazzo Jamieson injuried. Hedwards appears to have got an injury from WAFL.

    I know the margin looks terrible but I actually thought we competed reasonably well and we had a crack. It wasn't as bad as the margin looks and the margin can be a little bit deceiving. I thought we completed well in general plate we just like polish going forward and we broke down at centre half forward I think tactically we probably couldn't do much different but I would've liked to seen a few changes but overall I'm still happy with the direction that we're going in last year. We were getting flogged by 100 points on a very regular basis. At least now we are competing and sometimes when you compete, you're going to turn the ball over in crucial spots, but that's okay

    Missed the game because of mothers day but some random thoughts:
    - harry edwards for gov and culley for petch please.
    - yeo for sheed and waterman for ledwards if fit
    - gov should wear some sort of padded vest
    - heaven help our wafl team with these injuries mounting
    - all things considering, good game barass, witherden, cole and Duggan,

    Dom is a legend of the club, but not only should he not be in the 22 from now on, he should arguably be delisted. Cannot win games of football with someone who ruins defensive structures because of how poor his workrate is. Same knocks on TK but at least he's potent offensively.

    You have to understand, I’m a mad pies supporter, and the pies put a cue in the rack after half time, there is definitely a gap, but once your young blokes get more game time it will fall into place. Pies have found good form now so don’t be discouraged.

      I didn't see the game. But at this stage he should really be half back and is being given more responsibility than he is ready for. Remember Ed Allen got picked as an early pick by Collingwood and he has barely played a game yet. I see Ginbey as half back and wing. Not inside mid as he has a turning circle of a tractor. Its only his second season. At the end of 2026 season it will be possible to make a call, and even then he'll still be a youngster. I think your expectations are too high, don't believe all the hype from The West.

    Good second half..Ryan slowly worked.into the game. Witherden and the back six were ok given the onslaught. Sheed is not about to find pace. Game has gone past him. TK sub par. Reid ok. B. Williams terrible. Johnston and Dewar deserve more games.

    Predictable result. We're crawling to the midseason bye with injuries and our side lacking depth. With a struggling ruckman and Yeo out then our midfield will be massively exposed in contested possession. Just look at the last two years. I would always have Duggan or another defensive mid (Cole) in there just to provide physical pressure. We know last year that Williams Kelly Sheed plus youngster were getting smashed in the middle in centre clearances. Hall should be in with physicality. Maybe Culley if ready. Gaff or Hedwards if fit.

  • @stevelewis2080
    @stevelewis2080 Před 28 dny

    Okay sure, I get the optimism, hell; I kinda agree.
    Where I get frustrated is watching premiership players second to the ball, selling out their teammates, making dumb ill-disciplined mistakes/decisions (Sheed w/ 50m, Cripps last game), and not tackling/chasing/being out-hustled. These are all inexcusable and we need to stop accepting it. Sheed was god awful, TK lowered his colours, Ryan looks so underdone it's not funny, Edwards bless his heart doesn't look cut out for AFL footy. Chesser when played inside was actually pretty solid and we need to play him there more. Ginbey was completely overwhelmed and lacked composure as an inside midfielder but played much better as a halfback (where he should play moving forward). Harley was good, got stuck a few times doing too much, but still such a stud. Bailey Williams simply isn't AFL level as a ruck and prob as a fwd.
    We need to have way higher intensity in the contest, we simply can't rely purely on Yeoy to do it all as a 2 way player. His body won't be able to take it.
    The rest of the kids looked pretty good. TB can be excused for being average in the first half, vale Cam McCarthy
