- In August of 2019, we ventured out to the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in the beautiful mountains of Colorado. The scenery was breathtaking and the fleet of original Denver and Rio Grande Western locomotives and cars was impressive. This is without a doubt one of the premier railroads in the country. We were able to catch K28s #473 and #476 and K36s #481, #482, and #486. Enjoy the sights and sounds of authentic narrow gauge steam railroading in the San Juan Mountains.
That Powell on 482 sounds exhausted
Departures
481: 8:49/17:24
482: 10:25/19:06
473: 12:53
Great footage!! Wish I could head out there again, I was there for the SPNG 18 charter.
Thanks!! Nice, that's awesome that you got to see 18 there!
That whistle on 481 has 482’s whistle, which means 482 has a Powell 3 Chime that sounds like Nevada Northern 40’s whistle.
Awesome trains, love’em. 👍👍👍
Awesome!
So I see 481,482,486,473 and 476 are running and I know where 480 is it’s in the shed
Nice! I'm the head brakeman at 14:52
Thanks! And nice! That must be awesome!
482's whistle sounds similar to Nevada Northern 40's
I don’t even like the sound of that whistle. I rather the one the used before.
Wonder if 482 can get a 6 chime?
That whistle was stolen in late 92 early 93. The one for 497?? Santa Fe steptop 6er was stolen sadly.
@@nicholasmedovich8691 well that's a shame
@@nicholasmedovich8691 wonder if 486 can get a Reading 6 Chime?
K36’s IMHO would preform terrible on oil firing. None of them were ever designed. K37s because of the c class standard consolidations and k28s because most went to US army for oil burning i think would be the most consistent. Again this is my opinion.
The K28s that went to Alaska never burned oil, they were still coal until the end when they were side lined and scrapped. The 4 K-28 like Mikado's built for the railroad in Oahu were oil though.
