Dangerous USB phone chargers 12

  • Another pair of USB chargers - a test and what's inside. One is a "5-8V 1000mA" single port charger from eBay, the other has two USB ports and one micro USB port on a cable, claiming 5V 2.1A, donated by a viewer. Let's see what surprises and hazards are hidden inside. Including the schematic. Some chargers may not comply with safety regulations, they may cause an electric shock or fire. Their current rating may be fake, the output voltage may be wrong and they can cause electromagnetic interference or damage your devices.

    You are absolutely right that manufacturers no longer including chargers will simply mean that there won't be high-quality chargers in most homes; we're left with this dangerous crap and there's no incentive whatsoever for Chinese manufacturers to improve the safety or to make them meet their ratings. Phone manufacturers don't help matter, either, as any chargers they do sell may be of good quality, but are still overpriced. The inescapable trend I've witnessed in my lifetime is that you can either spend too much or too little; the middle ground continually disappears.

      Thankfully a few weeks ago, I managed to buy a charger from LIDL supermarkets which didn't cost too much. It was £7.99 and features 5V/2.4A via USB type A, and QC 3.0/PD via USB type C (5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A). This one should be safe enough and hopefully won't blow up my phone.

      And the 'good' manufacturers also glue/weld their devices shut so you can't even take a look inside if it's of genuine quality, let alone repair it.

      I think it’s ridiculous to call a safe, well designed original charger for $20 “overpriced”. I think the extra $17 are a tiny price to pay for knowing that it won’t electrocute me or burn my house down. And it’ll likely be more efficient as a bonus.

    11:57 Excellent, this is a fantastic transformer, really good quality! There's no isolation between the secondary and auxiliary windings, and the huge gap means that the secondary is touching the primary. So all three windings are isolated jut by the thin lacquer on the wires (approx 0.05mm or less) - which is not designed to be the only isolation between mains and humans. This is an awesome electrocution deathtrap! Super dodgy!

      Actually larger ones like Samsung, Apple and other ones stopped including chargers in package (since iPhone 12 and Samsung S21), however on the other hand those phone require USB-C PD and or PPS (programmable power supply) so those Schnick & Schnack el cheapos like those on video will charge in snail speed. For instance with last super dodgy charger my Samsung S20 would be charging (3880 mAh accu) for about 4-5 hours, while with >= 25 W PPS power supply it is done in ~ 80 minutes and with 9V PDO or QC2.0 / QC3.0 it is charged in 2 hours.
      I was actually surprised when I received USB-C 20W power supply in iPad mini 6 (2021) box, however I had already Samsung 45W / Xiaomi 65W chargers + various USB-C notebook chargers (DELL, Lenovo, Apple), so I kept it as backup :)

    The sad truth of the matter is that these chargers are going to become much more commonplace in the future, with smartphone manufacturers (notably Samsung and Apple) no longer shipping chargers with many of their phones. The cables that also come with these phones are USB type C based, rather than USB type A, so their previous charger won't fit the cable that is being provided with the phone. This will be problematic especially if the user is switching between different brands (e.g. from Samsung to Apple) or if their old charger was a different type (e.g. from Micro USB to USB type C). Given how the manufacturers are trying to charge a lot of money for their genuine chargers, people won't pay it, and will instead buy a different charger from elsewhere - which may be of questionable quality.

      Brazil is basically a scam, you must pay something like 80% of the product's price in taxes, and since the Brazilian real is worth nothing nowadays and taxes are charged in dollars (why would the customs charge you in some monopoly money like the Brazilian real?), anything over 2 dollars is instantly a luxury item. Brands like Multilaser love it as they pay only 2,5%, selling crappy Chinese products for prices that are closer to quality brands, basically what brazilians would call "camelô gourmet". If Lenovo makes a phone that costs 800, Multilaser comes with a similar one and puts a very similar price, even though they have paid something like 20 or 40 dollars for some dodgy white brand manufacturer in Shenzhen or Guangdong.

      The charger would just probably shut down. I guess this is one interesting features of these crappy supplies. May be related to the fact that the control chip gets its power from the auxiliary winding - and the loaded secondary starves it so the chip ceases oscillation.

    • @RicoElectrico
      @RicoElectrico Před 2 lety

      Another failure mode - a permanent one - would be the secondary rectification diode overheating. It did happen in the past DGW's tests as well. But it's much more rare, usually shutdown comes first.

      There might be a mistake in the schematic, the divider should go after the diode to get a DC value. The winding will output high frequency AC, but each half-wave would be different and malformed - not a sine wave at all.

      Car phone chargers are not likely to be dangerously-dodgy because there's no high voltage, no need for isolation which is the common culprit in the mains chargers - if the charger melts it'll likely just trip a breaker, but if the isolation is bad your phone will get mains voltage (with a bonus of enough resistance on its path to not trip a breaker while it fries the phone and the cable)

      1 hour to 10 hour shouldn't matter since there's not much space for heat accumulation. I suspect that most heat related failures are when running them near the cutoff current, because those control chips usually include short protection.

    • @argcargv
      @argcargv Před 2 lety +1

      Without it the high frequency switching noise will have no return path and will instead radiate out from the cables causing EMI problems.

    • @westelaudio943
      @westelaudio943 Před 2 lety

      Basically you can think of the transformer as an nonideal isolator, because the prim. and sec. windings form a "capacitor" which can pass high frequency AC which is still part of the mains curcuit. This is so weak it can't hurt you but it will seek to return to mains earth and radiate off of everything along the way. So this interference cap is put in to short it out before it reaches the cable.
