- Now the sculptural tables are just about completed and I will discuss, level and apply finish to the four pieces. This video is the ninth of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables." More information can be found on my website www.davidgroth.com
Most people can make a furniture, but turning it into a unique piece of art is another level of craftsmanship. Such an awesome series of transforming something into amazing!

Very generous! Thank you.
OK, I'm either done doing anything, 'cause I can't match this incredible work or I've got to live another 77 years to start over for the fifth or sixth time ... freaking awesome my friend. I will forever be grateful that you placed this work on CZcams for me to become inspired by. Thank You tons.
Many thanks for the thoughtful comment!
:@@DavidGrothsculpture, you live in one of the greatest spots on the planet. In my travels, I have dubbed it, "the place you can't get to from any place else". That being said, I would love to find an excuse to travel to that region again sooner than later, perhaps even fly in to the closest strip and rent something with wheels. If you would be open to another artist seeking your inspiration from up close, let me know. I must say that the chances of this happening are down below 20%, so the threat is not too potent. Have a look at my site or my CZcams postings (about 160, I think) and note that our medium is vastly different. However, I am seeking a new challenge and have begun already to include wood into my designs. This may be more than you need to know, but I would love to have the chance to meet you if the opportunity opens up. Your thoughts ... I will risk offering my primary email here ... db@coppergardens.com (clue to my web address therein)
i love how every single piece is unique in every single way and is hand crafted 100% loved it thankyou
one word FANTASTIC. Thank you for taking the time to do this project, for all to see.
one more word....THANKS!
in these days of the pernicious corona virus, your creations are messages from heaven which transmit that hope remains eternal! God bless you and your vision.
I am just amazed of your craftminship and how you do it with a chain saw AWSOME David .it's a pleasure just watching you at your work .
Thanks Peter, so glad you enjoyed the video!
WOWWWWWWW!! :-) Thank you for sharing your talent and letting us watch you work
This guy and his work is a "One in 7 Billion" Bravo.
A billion and one thanks!
How gorgeous! Wow, superb artistry! Master craftsman to be sure.
Such fine creative sculptures...from storm surge beach found myrtle rootballs/stumps - lovely organic shapes, colors, textures. I imagine - over time - the maturing color /patina just embellishes what you initially created. Such a pleasure to watch the process. TY.
This was a great series. Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks!
WoW that's alot of work, but, In the end it's looks absolutely fabulous. Well done David.
Thanks! :-)
Beautiful and unique...I love it!
I happened to alight upon your video. Your work is very inspirational and indeed very unique. It must be very tricky to make "yet another" table that's got something to say. This is the case here. You've put a great personal touch on your work, and I must admit I really enjoyed your surface treatment. I've done miles of French polishing on antiques -I live in Paris France- and this is a pleasant change to see. It's so alive and organic. You have my complete admiration.
You certainly made my day! Thanks so much for letting me know. You never know about a visit since my partner is from Ireland and she will be due for another visit in the next few years!
This piece will be in a museum one day.
It's like the table was always in the piece of wood & what you did was pare away what was hiding it.
A great talent to have.
Thanks!
Terrific job with the shaping and texturing!
Beautiful!
I love your work. Thanks for the inspiration!👍🏻
Thanks so much!
Grazie.Sono pezzi magnifici.Il suo talento ed il suo sudore, sfideranno gli anni a venire.
Grazie molto
His sculpture has taken on the movement of the ocean .
I found your videos totally by accident and glad I did. I was thinking all the time, what an excellent Master Class. Your method for equalising the length of the legs to eliminate wobble was a tip I'll be able to use on chairs and small tables. Nice one! Col, NZ.
+Colin Gantiglew Glad the technique will work for you. Thanks!
The remarkable creativity, bringing not only meet)) pleasure even from observation by!
+Aleksandr Bezizvestnykh
Thanks for the generous comment.
So pleased that I found you here on youtube and of course you have a new sub.
Sincerely

+naybobdenod Glad you enjoyed! Thanks.
Beautiful! That's inspiring.
He's not just a pretty face. Great talent. Great job, loved it.
Looking for driftwood an aquarium I found your videos. You sir are an amazing artist. Really enjoyed.
Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment!
I hope you recover soon and with a smile!
Fascinating. Really enjoyed watching, and did so in amazement. I LOVE collecting large pieces of driftwood, pressure washing, cleaning, drying for months at a time, but I'm not very good at identifying the type of wood. That's what I was looking for when I happened upon your videos. After doing this for so many years, my first thought is how much your hands likely hurt!! Thanks so much for sharing
Fortunately no problem with my hands hurting...and I've been at this for 40 years now. So gratifying that you enjoyed the video, thanks!
This is one of the most beautiful job I in my life
Congratulations
Thanks so much!
incredible work
Beautiful. What a talent.
Many thanks!
Dave you are one badass wild man, very much enjoy seeing your work (vid, also very concise). Also on your brand of finish, did not think the poly could be used in the same sentence, but obviously wrong. Fantastic, will dig deeper in your work. Sincerely Michael
+Michael Wilson
Thanks! The idea of using poly with linseed oil and bees wax I got from a Sam Maloof formula published in Fine Woodworking a few years back.
Beautiful and Amazing!!
Many thanks!
Can't wait to see the couch and recliner that goes with this table..
Truly jaw droppingly beautiful, amazing skill, for me they are visually soothing,
Many thanks!
Your videos deserve more views!! Your talent and passion for what you do is out of this world!! Extremely thankful for sharing your art with us.

Many thanks for the glowing compliment!
Very well done sir, a true artist by my standard. Your patience and skill are molded together, this in my opinion, is a work of art and love. Thank you for sharing, it could not have been easy, working under the camera. Thanks to both.
Much appreciated!
love your work well done
Many thanks!
stunning works
Thanks!
Good luck with carving the tree trunks and thanks for commenting! David
Beautiful.
Thanks!
This is great. I understand. Nice work.
Many thanks!
wow, you have a golden hand & brain. i like the wood Sniffing technique. 👍
Sniffing helps and sometimes the only way to identify the wood I'm looking for.
I like the Sniffing, period.
This inspires the shit out of me. Just building 2 own design tables and this really gives me inspiration and insight, thanks for posting and showing your methods!
So glad you liked the video...good luck!
Thanks, they are pentagon shape tables made from 10 smaller triangles, and I burnt the wood in shou sugi ban technic. :)
Glad you like the tables. You can contact me by email through my David Groth .com website.
Art!
I am in awe of your artistic and practical prowess. Thank you for sharing your craft - very interesting!
Very generous...thanks!

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!
Awesome!
Thanks!
I have the chainsaw and some interesting tree trunks and this video is the tipping point, so thank you David for the inspiration. I live in Yorkshire, England close to some of Europe's finest sculpture resources so........
very very very nice ...
EXCELENTE !!!!!!!
Thanks!
@costarricanarte
Gracias, me alegro que te gusten mis trabajos! David
in shock..!.came across the first video as i was just about to put the laptop down and get some rest before work tomorrow morning... but now 9 videos later im not sure i should even bother going to work in the morning... because as a woodwork teacher myself, i now know that neither my students or even i will ever produce such wonders!! Just Genius! any chance you could pop over the Atlantic to Ireland here and show my students what they're working towards..?
I certainly appreciate your very thoughtful comment about my work.
Resurrection of wood in another dimension! Good .
Wish I could have that piece in my home!
Great compliment! Thanks.
love wood and timber art projects myself. these tables are spectacular. I can't seem to accept the gouge work on the surface. I'd have taken a scoop gouge to all side surfaces for aesthetics and texture. in knowing that the tables made like this, they'll never hold a true plane. I think the gouges speak to this reality as the artist try's to let you know the surface isn't expected to maintain an even plane.
regardless id dig deeper and invest in a drying kiln to achieve correct moisture levels maybe even try soaking the timbers in glycerin to lock in its shape before craving.
there are expensive alternatives but this is what I've used with good success and is safe.
best of luck, keep evolving.
I don't have half the passion or physical wellness to achieve anything this grand but someday I might.
till then I'll have to share my creative criticism
✌🏼️😉👍🏼
be well two thumbs up!
Wood is a living medium and the work gives it even more life, and also, as David described, the pieces look like they are in motion. Accomplished artistic expression and superb craftsmanship, beautiful and fascinating results. Really enjoyed the videos. Was on youtube looking for a chainsaw jig and do not know where the time went!
The chizling/carving gives the piece energy.
Certainly agree! 👍
Good! I like!
Thanks!
very nice
awesome
Thanks!
The only designs that ever exist are the ones I directly draw onto the piece as it develops. By working this way the resulting form best lends itself to utilizing the original raw wood shape.
Nice job,very pretty
he's very talented
Thanks!
Trinidad. I've been through there on the way to and from, Oregon.
Great place.
I was in Bandon, Oregon helping my sister repair her barn. In the mean time I was making bench furniture for her and her friends and they suggested I make furniture as a business. It didn't work out staying with my sister but I do miss the nice people, the ocean, and the peace working with old wood.
Very interesting creations! How did you join the two pieces and how can you make sure that these two pieces won't fall apart?
The two pieces of wood are through bolted and glued together. There are wood plugs covering the bolt ends.
Шедевр. Очень красиво. Лайк!
+Аleksey Bek
Большое спасибо за светящейся комплимент!
Очень оригинально ! Молодец !
stupendo!
Thanks!
David, great video, would you tell me more about the finish of oil and wax..? perhaps a video on it...?
Thank you
Hello Edgar,
The finish I use:
1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 thinner, 1/3 polyurethane, and grated beeswax melted together to the consistency of cream. Rub the finish into the wood and when it is dry (probably a day or two) buff it out. You can repeat the process a couple times to have a more durable surface. The finish is liquid resistant, however not liquid proof. This formula is very close to Sam Maloof's formula published in Fine WoodWorking November/December 1980. Hope this works for you!
Good luck, David Groth
Thank you very much David...
very very nice and beutiful ark🙏🙏🙏🙏🌷😃🌷🌹🌺
Thanks!
I love watching masters do their work. You just seem so confident in everything you do. How many hours goes into a piece on average? You must have at least 5000 hours by now. They say (Malcom Gladwell in his book Outliers) you need 10000 hours to become a world class master.
Also do you have any trouble selling your pieces? Just curious, keep up the great work!
Hello Danny,
I began carving 40 years ago...so who knows how many hours it all adds up to? There is no easy way to calculate an average on how long it takes to make a piece from start to finish. I usually work on 4 or 5 pieces at a time...the larger sculptures take at least 2-3 months. At times sales have been very good and other times very slow...generally if you want to make a lot of money I would suggest going into a profession other than art! You have to make art because it is what you really want to do.
David Groth Thanks for responding. Yea art is known to be a really tough profession to make money in, I don't think I'd ever do it unless I really had a passion for it.
Have to respect that I understand
I'm trying to figure out where the thumbs down comes in , how do you give such a talent a thumbs down is beyond anything... great workmanship!!
👍👍👍
Please can you tell what kind of coating you use? I couldn't understand it in the video - if i remember correct it is a self made coating? I ask because i use a wood wax from the hardwarestore called "Hartölwachs" in german and i looking for some alternatives to wax the wooden gun shafts of old muzzleloaders.

David kamu memang pintar sekali
Totally Unbelievable you are up there on your own David nobody comes even close
Hi, beautiful work sir. I am curious about that finish paste. You've mention that it is made out of three ingrediencies but I've managed to understand 2 only, linseeds oil and bee wax but have difficulties to understand the third one.
Turn that table upside down and use a suspended router table to level those feet quickly, easily, and exactly.
You work inspires me. I create pieces similar to yours. Hopefully I'll have my pieces up on the tube soon! Maybe you can check them out.
+Jeffrey Janiga Thanks!
Do you have this product for sale?
Do u allow people to come visit your studio or do classes. I too am a cabinet furniture maker, but veneer
Thanks for your interest, but the reason I upload the videos is to share information and at the same time remain private.
Where is David located? Washington?
Erik Williams
I’m in Northern California next to the coast.
Ah! I ended up answering my own question by watching to the very end of the video and saw you were up in the Trinidad area (I used to drive up to Arcata all the time). It's nice to know that there are such lush forests in california!
Have any tables like this for sale? Approx how much?$$
