Robert Reich: Who Rigged The System-And How To Fix It | Town Hall Seattle

  • Millions of Americans have lost confidence in our political and economic system. After years of stagnant wages, volatile job markets, and an unwillingness by those in power to deal with profound threats such as climate change, there is a mounting sense that our system is rigged to serve only those select few with enough money to secure a controlling stake. With characteristic clarity and passion, Robert Reich shows how wealth and power have interacted to install an elite oligarchy, eviscerate the middle class, and undermine democracy.
Drawing on the example of Jamie Dimon-the chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase-Reich exposes how those at the top propagate myths about meritocracy, national competitiveness, corporate social responsibility, and the "free market" to distract from their accumulation of extraordinary wealth and power. Reich outlines how, instead of answering the call to civic duty, this socioeconomic elite has chosen to uphold self-serving policies that line their own pockets and benefit their bottom line. Join Reich for an exposé that demystifies the system so that we might instill fundamental change and demand that democracy works for the majority once again.
Robert B. Reich is Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He has served in three national administrations and has written fifteen books, including The Work of Nations, The Common Good, Saving Capitalism, Supercapitalism, and Locked in the Cabinet.

Unfortunately, some of us, (myself for instance) are not employed. We are struggling to survive - I am fortunate to be a Retiree (age 73) - living on Social Security (and nothing else) -- but I am fearful because I could be suddenly faced with no income at all -- and lose the retirement home that I am living in (in fear these days).

Well yes, but Reich is much more than a "brilliant mind and a flawless orator". It is true that the "chronically disadvantaged members of our society" would benefit from radical changes in our society involving greater democracy, a fairer tax system. our educational systems, our concept of
what is good for the international community. We could start by using proportional representation in our voting system and making bribery illegal. I am talking about lobbying.

I listened and cried for the American worker who really does nothing but work for no real reward. I was in that system too long as a sole business person and I worked SO HARD for virtually nothing, and I got about 1 or 2 thank you's. I just kept assuming my reward was coming... But, I was similarly used in my family of origin where nothing I did was seen to be of much value. It has been such a hard life to look back on it makes me cry for all the working people who wind up feeling pretty much like no one in spite of their efforts to give out their best quality. To die in the pandemic is a relief from the pain of carrying other people's burdens in loyal sacrifice of self... a victim of a world that is so very, very unfair especially to minority people and women.

But he was a little too far left to get enough popular support. And, of course, the DNC and the system as a whole was rigged against him as well. I always thought how ironic (but predictable) that they called him 'Crazy Bernie', when, in reality he made perfect since and Trump is actually the certifiable nutcase_ and yet so many support him. Also, if any election was rigged, it was against Bernie in favor of Hillary. This, my friends, is what we're up against. Thank you, Mr. Reich, for all your hard work. I don't know how you keep from banging your head into a wall. I try to explain our "system" this way: In our system, business exists solely to make money; it's it's raison d'etre. It "behaves" like a shark, intent on only one thing, to satisfy it's appetite. If a business were a human, we'd liken it to a sociopath, as it measures it's success solely on its own gain. Regardless of what the business advertises about "caring" about us consumers, it doesn't. I wouldn't, nor don't, even expect it to. That's where well-crafted regulations enter in. "Regulations" are a way of imposing a "conscience," if you will, on business. They're the vital, protective buffer between the vast imbalance of power between workers/customers and business.

I am so glad that I came across the Seattle Town Hall site, I live in Vancouver Washington, where you live in Oregon as far as the majority of the media is concerned. We have had an ongoing problem of even some of our ZIP codes being classified as Oregon, which is a problem when you're dealing with businesses where the difference in state laws can be an issue. I was a medical billing specialist, and possibly public enemy number one as far as Blue Cross Blue shield Humana and quite a few others in Oregon were concerned ; so being retired is probably a good thing. Medical professionals are obligated to adhere to the laws of the state they are licensed to practice in. They cannot dictate Oregon laws to Washington State physicians or medical specialties or the clients they serve in Washington State. Auto insurers paying for medical and chiropractic treatments, had possibly classified me as an enemy of the state. While I did work to correct the ZIP code problem, I also audited their audits, aka EOMB's explaining why they rejected things that they didn't want to pay for., And professional justification. ... My audit of your audit says professional standards are different in Washington State you cannot impose Oregon professional standards that are entirely different upon Washington professionals, and, btw, if these Oregon physicians are licensed as chiropractors we will be happy to accept their opinions until then ...pay up! I just had to share this, probably because Robert Reich gets me all feisty! This is just a wonderful form, so yeah I'll get to your donation site.

When I was young, a millionaire was considered filthy rich. Now they talk about being billionaires. Really? Why do people feel some people should be billionaires? Do they know that most of these billions they have are taken out of the economy and if spread around to the peasant workers (so they wouldn't need government assistance), would be circulating in the economy? When we talk about breaks for millionaires vs. billionaires (even with inflation), we should acknowledge that 1 million seconds is 11.6 days while a billion seconds is 31.7 years. But the facts are that minimum wage is plenty, if not too much, to get by on while billionaires are left with a mere 100s of millions to get by on (after taxes) and can barely make ends meet. Poor, poor billionaires, I feel so bad for them I'm about to cry...I need a tissue.

Robert Reich mentioned the social conscience of Louis Brandeis, who expressed strong support for Henry George's approach to the elimination of poverty and inequality. In 1916 Brandeis wrote to Mary Fels, widow of the industrialist Joseph Fels regarding her support for "the establishment ... of a single tax colony in Palestine." Brandeis wrote that the "project will prove a most important contribution, not only to the single tax, but also the Zionist cause." As someone who first read Henry George's works in the early 1980s I have found it tragic that his remarkable analysis of how the world works was ignored or misrepresented by economists and others who are supposed to be governed by objective, scientific analysis.

A wage must support a person for a day. Otherwise it is theft. Maybe it does not make the person rich but it must pay for simple food, clothing, shelter. Any time the minimum wage is raised, it causes the prices of everything to rise so the person is not better off. Currency must be based on something; not printed out of thin air. Historically, basing the currency on gold at least in some part keeps the politicians from printing it out of thin air. They have to print it based on the amount of gold they have. It is the only think that will restrain them. Consider the power they will have if they are able to have digital money, criptos - that they can increase so easily. Also, if a citizen falls out of favor with the powers that be, their entire wealth can be wiped out with the touch of a button. Thus the person can be totally controlled. Every transaction he makes will be known and thus controlled. As if that were not enough, they want control over the health system. Then they will have control over life and death as well as wealth through digital currency.

And that won't change, because the standard of living of most Chinese people is simply to low for them to replace us. And also, the Fed is the reason we haven't had another great depression so far. You socialists always use Sweden as the example to follow. Well, you have a total population of 10 million people. It compares to LA or NYC. Also Sweden is not a socialist economic system. It's a CAPITALIST business model with a socialist type government system. It is a small country where poverty is very low and the cultural norms are practiced pretty much throughout the entire country. They have a small GDP where they all work together to produce and maintain their excellence in their specialties they export so they all agree to this system that benefits most of the populace. That is not the case for the US. However I do believe when we did have an actual capitalist system where the government used socialist laws to control the size and power of corporate monopolies, to enforce safety and labor laws to protect the people from oligarch tyrants like we had during the Robber Baron years, much like we have today. Today we have crony capitalism for the workers and socialism for the oligarchs running the show.

I'm glad our country doesn't have the system America does. In my country, everyone has a right and *obligation* to vote, so the results are truly a reflection of the majority's will. Also, I can decide on issues alone. I don't have to label myself or register as belonging to any party, so I can't be targetted for or against anyone. No-one knows who I will vote for or voted for in the last election. I find it really horrible that people in America who are not actually politicians call themselves 'Republicans' or 'Demoncrats' and feel they have to vote for one party and hate everyone who wears the opposite label. Americans aren't Americans voting for what's best for America. They are 'red' or 'blue' people and at that level your civil war has never ended. Knowing that NO-ONE is obliged to pre-empt their right to decide, in private, at the ballot box is such a freedom that Americans never know. No-one has to lobby me to register to vote. Everyone in my country *must* vote. No-one can harrass me for an imagined political allegiance. No-one knows what my allegiance might be. No-one can rig electoral profiles either or stop me voting. I have to vote. I don't have to tell anyone how I'll vote. I pity Americans for all the limits on their freedoms.

I agree with so much of what you have covered in your book and the problem with excessive wealth and its corrupting powerful forces. However when it comes to the covid and the WHO and other alphabet agencies in the system you so accurately point out, I think you might want to reassess your position in the matter. Closing everything down served the powerful. They forced small businesses out and their handling of the covid crisis, aside from blaming everything on Trump has done more harm than good. I can see this is an older post so maybe you have changed you position here. Im pretty sure the powerful people who now run this system brought us covid and the solution to it which is not a solution. The 2012 Olympics celebrations was a ritual for the plandemic and the raising of the witched. Are you a victim of compartmentalization? are you cleverly helping to set the stage for the global take over? Or are you staying in your lane and playing it safe while serving bread crumbs of truth . Ir is sad that we were all brainwashed for decades by equating communism with socialism. It was so entrenched that the mere mention of socialism strikes horror in most Americans. Yes, it was a con job of the century. Now we see the end result of an imbalanced capitalistic
system, where all the gains and wealth go to a handful. All the rest are failures, not having the wherewithal to make it big times in a free for all economic system. Most Americans are reeling in despair, absolutely unable to comprehend how they were taken by
the rich and powerful. No matter the one-sidedness of capitalism, our system is great. China would look at America and be envious of how well the US has succeeded in the mass brainwashing of an entire nation. Just look at the pittance of a social security check for survival while the elites bathe in champagne and caviar--and blame oneself. We are indeed a nation of sheep.
