How we trained our puppy to ring a bell to go outside (Pomsky dog training)

  • In this video, we explain step-by-step how we trained our puppy to ring a door bell to let us know when she needs to go potty outside. Our puppy is a Pomsky. Pomskies are very smart dogs, but they're also very stubborn. Teaching our dog Beedi to tell us she wants to go outside by ringing the bell has made our life so much easier and we hope it makes yours too.

    Sophie is bell trained. I didn't use treats. Every time I would take her out to potty I would ring the bell and say outside potty and within 48 hours she was ringing the bell. Not consistently, but it showed me that she understood the concept. She also went through a phase of just playing with them for a bit. It didn't last long. Now, she'll ring her bell to tell me she needs or wants something like to be fed to to get a treat.

    Hi James and Laurent:
    This is the best video I've seen to date about teaching a dog to ring the doorbell when shehe needs to go outside to relieve. I really liked how you explained the importance of making connections for the dog. This is logical but so many people don't see it. They try to train the dog like a human, and they do not think about setting the dog up for success.
    I also really appreciated that you talked about the treats being an intermediate step, something else I see many people mucking up on.
    I don't use that system with my dog, but I do use a bell initially when I'm teaching my guide dog to target a door, counter, light pole, or elevator button. I also use a clicker and treats. Eventually bell, clicker and treats go away.
    Anyway, what you demonstrated in this video is a great foundation to targetting and can be transferred to so many other skills.
    Thank you for your content. Take care.

But, regardless how many people watch them, we're always glad when viewers find them useful and it helps them with their puppy.

    Hi James & Laurent: My Pomsky will be 10 months in 2 days. I've had him since he was 8 weeks old. He does his business on a pad in the house & now he'll go out to the patio as long as no one is out there to do his business. He DOES NOT like to use the bathroom outside, he seems to hold it til we get home #1 & #2. How do I train him to use the bathroom outside?

    • @JamesandLaurent
      @JamesandLaurent  Před 2 lety

      It sounds like he's shy and not wanting people around more so than not wanting to go outside. When we're at the dog park, Beedi goes to the very end of the park to do her business rather than in front of us. Maybe that's one way to start. Let him roam around at a park to get him used to it.

    How do you know how good the breeder is?

    • @JamesandLaurent
      @JamesandLaurent  Před 2 lety +1

      If you are talking about Pomskies, the American Pomsky Kennel Club has a list of approved breeders. That being said, there are also reputable breeders that are not on that list. Beedi's breeder is called Oxsana Perfect Pomsky. It is one of the oldest Pomsky breeders in the US and we highly recommend them.

    My pomsky boy (Milo, 7.5 months old) rings his bell when we go out. I didn’t use treats. Only issue is he sometimes rings the bell when he hears something outside that he is curious about and wants to see what it is. So sometimes he rings when he doesn’t have to go, but not the end of the world!

    Great tool for potty training but beware cause they then learn that bell ringing will get them let outside even if they don’t have to potty. You then don’t know if they need want to go out and play or potty so lots of trips for you responding to the bell.
