They weren't scared or confused. The truth of the matter is, umpires don't always know for sure whether or not a pitched ball hit a batter, especially back then before video review. They will look to the batter's reaction to gauge the situation. If the batter is wincing in pain, or automatically starts going to first without waiting for a call, etc... But since Belle stood there acting like he wasn't hit, the umpire didn't make him take first because he assumed he really wasn't hit by the pitch.

I was a usher for the Cleveland Indians from 1995- 2001.
    Fabulous experience!!!
Until he left Cleveland we saw him every single day they played @ home ,as well as, the other amazing players
Albert was always kind and introspective.
Intense @ times but always approachable.
Usually he was quiet but cool with a head nod.
We talked briefly once. A truly memorable experience.
The convo was initially tense, tight and then heartwarming and especially thoughtful.
Sometimes he was with his twin brother who very cool and pleasant.
But Albert was normally pretty receptive to saying hello, a nod or wave to usher before the game...when respectful.
He never was disrespectful to me.
He should have been MVP several years but he wasn't an "Media Darling🤦🏾‍♀️"
Which was ridiculous because he was a 50/50 man in 1995!!!
The 1995-1997 Indians are still my favorite.

What were his stats you ask?
39 HRs, 126 RBI, 98 Runs, 28 Doubles, 316 Total Bases, and .575 Slugging Pct
In fact, Albert beat Mo in nearly every statistical category

    OBP: .401 to .388
    OPS: 1.091 to .963
    BBs: 73 to 68
However, Vaughn did league the league and nearly doubled Albert in one category- Strikeouts: 150 to 80

@@tchoupitoulos agreed, plus not wanting to take a base doesn't diminish todays athlete. They are talented.

The two response before this one are guys to avoid at parties. They also will definitely be able to lead you in the correct path for your retirement/mortgage. HTH

    "Take 1st base."
*grips the Earth, rips the entire diamond up, spins the field underneath him so that first base is now home plate.

I remember Albert Bell. He was tuff as nails no BS baseball player - period! People use to bitch about how much he made as a player, but I think he underwent two hip surgeries and literally gave his body to the game. He earned every penny he made. I wish there were more players in the game today like Albert Bell!!

In the slow replay look at how long Belle stares at the ball before getting hit. Surprised the fastball didnt chicken shit and turn into a slider

Albert Belle was my favorite player growing up. I lived in Cleveland at the time. Over all the years I’m not sure I could pinpoint why he was my favorite. Now I can, so thank you Jomboy. 😂

I saw him with the Sky Sox when I was a kid, he went by Joey Belle then. Had a bunch of homerun balls from him but the moment I remember most was after a strikeout he went into the dugout bathroom and proceeded to smash the sink with his bat. The acoustics of smashing porcelain in a stadium is something I'll never forget.

I was at this game and it was epic. Still remember it as a 12 year old. Albert Belle hit three home runs that game, Cal hit his 399th home run, and then hit in the game winning run with the bases juiced.

I was there in Cleveland for this man’s greatness as a hitter. There were many games where he was a baseball god. His talent and power and drive will not be seen often. “ALBERT, ALBERT, ALBERT...”
