  • It's the end of October, the temperatures are dropping, the waters are getting colder but i am still out there riding.
    On this My Sea-Doo Life Adventure I am riding on the Upper Niagara River from Fort Erie to beyond Chippawa in Niagara.
    During the ride I venture off across the Border over to America not once but twice.
    Also take a quick look at the Historic Navy Island.
    I decided this will be a 2 part video, part 2 will conclude with a ride up the Welland river before finishing down at Buffalo by the Peace Bridge

    As an old-time Grand Islander and operator of AIS Station Grand Island 3617, I like to learn as much as I can about the Upper Niagara now that the old timers are all passed on. Thanks! You always have a mooring at my dock, Nigel!

    Hello from Germany, north, close to Hamburg.
    I like your VLogs, give me so much inspiration for my future adventures on the water. I am a beginner and want to discover the ELBE river upwards or the Baltic coast next year. Own a Seadoo GTX300Lim 2021. Best regards.

    Nice video, I dont think Ive ever seen anyone actually go anywhere on a jet ski.
    Pretty gutsy going north of Navy Island and around the north end of Grand Island on a jet ski. With only 1 engine, no way to row, and no ANCHOR your life would be in serious danger if your engine quit, esp that time of year when no one else is out on the water. Out in the middle of the river like that, you would never be able to swim to shore in either direction if your boat / jet ski was dead in the water, esp with all that gear you had on. With a wet suit, kick board and swim fins..... maybe. Always have a plan B on the Niagara.
    Last I knew of the Canadian parks department does have a way to rescue boaters if they get hung up in the rapids above the falls, with a very impressive jet boat, but only if you are lucky enough to get hung up in the rocks where the water is more shallow.
    Strawberry Island just south of Grand Island in the middle of the river is a great place to spend the afternoon, if you have a boat to get there.
    When I was a teenager in the '70s we rode our bicycles from the west side of Buffalo, over the south Grand Island bridge (there is a side walk, very narrow). Usually went to Beaver Island State park for the day, but a few times we rode all the way around Grand Island right along the river on both sides.
    A really excellent bicycle ride is from the Peace Bridge on the Canadian side all the way along the river to the falls. In fact Ive stopped at that same Tim Hortons a few times, on bicycle and motorbike rides. For most of the ride you are less than 20 feet from the edge of the river, and its perfectly flat riding on a bicycle.

      You are right, no rescue unless Hydro guys have boat ready. A seadoo went over 3 years ago, broke down, rider was safe, sea doo floated down river and then over. It was recovered, badly damaged but miraculously in one peice

    Love Love Love Everything bagels. Chippawa has the BEST Fish and Chips in all of Niagara. Been here, Niagara Falls, for 10 years and just tried the Fish and Chips at the Buried Treasure Cafe. It is to die for. Might even go as far to say, the Best in Southern Ontario. Great ride today, loved the scenery, but a bit upset over the markers that were removed. Who do you contact concerning that?

    • @NigelHay
      @NigelHay  Před 2 lety

      Firstly, Fish n Chips, I will make sure i get some next weekend!
      secondly, the Bouys (keep out) I can only guess they are removed for the winter due to Ice? it's the only thing i could think of.
      But a person from out of the area riding today could be tempted to go further down river and close to the falls not knowing the dangers that are just meters away

    Nice cold weather adventure! Wondering what the current on the river is typically like between fort erie and chippewa. Looking to put a small boat in and do some fishing?

    • @NigelHay
      @NigelHay  Před rokem

      Depends how small and where you go.
      The current I would say is ok for a small boat between Rail Bridge (Fort Erie) and up along Grand Island.
      I wouldn't go beyond these points as the currents really increase. River is shallower at Peace Bridge and runs very fast.
      Also does the same around Navy Island.

    • @kenwittlief255
      @kenwittlief255 Před rokem +1

      the water under the Peace Bridge is the fastest, it is between 8 and 12 knots, depending on the wind surge and the recent rains

    I'm sure you have been asked this but are you ever concerned about being that close to the falls? How fast is the water moving and is there any chance of a rescue if you have a malfunction on the jetski? I'd be so nervous going that close. Do people go closer??? Great video

    • @NigelHay
      @NigelHay  Před 11 měsíci

      On the upper river, the only risk you would really have of going over the falls would be if you had engine failure and then you would have about 1km to get on to a rock or small island.
      I believe a seadoo went over a couple of years ago.
      Rider made it to safety but the seadoo eventually went over the falls and was recovered, mainly intact!

    • @NigelHay
      @NigelHay  Před 2 lety +1

      Just Mark, I looked into this, the protocol is to notify them of your intention and where you are landing, then you have to call in i think. That said I have known of a few people with boats that have gone over to the US side and just carry the passport in case they get stopped.
      I will do a video on this early Spring as i go to Buffalo for the very first time. I'll do a detailed video on what we all need to do when going to the the US via water.
