Easy answer: ride as if you’re invisible. Meaning, ride as if other drivers don’t see you. Be cautious of drivers pulling out of driveways and changing lanes

Not only assume people can’t see you but just make yourself more presentable: Stay out of blind spots, and if you’re feeling shiesty add some reflective strips to your jacket/helmet if you wanna be a little more subtle with your high-vis attire.

I just bought my first bike 4 weeks ago, a 2019 Triumph Street Twin. Im 37 yrs old. Other than the motorcycle course I had never ridden a bike before. That said, im a pretty competent man, great with a manual transmission and fully understood HOW to ride. I was indeed a bit nervous when I went to test ride the Street Twin but the moment I set off I felt at home and I literally rode it for 4 minutes before telling the salesmen I wanted it. Drove it home that day for a 30 minute ride and I was VERY surprised at how comfortable I felt. I definitely was careful and a bit timid. Took everything nice and easy. Four weeks now and im still surprised at how quickly I adjusted and comfortable I feel on 2 wheels now. Get out there and ride yall! Don't be afraid, take it easy at first, stick to roads you know well and increase your riding on busier roads as your confidence builds.

My boss drove me 20 miles away to pick up my new motorcycle on the clock. I have never operated a motorcycle but knew how everything worked thanks to your videos. I got familiar with the bike in the parking lot for about 10 minutes then decided to hit the road. I pulled out on the highway with a little jerking and reached 6th gear and felt like I was flying. Looked down at the speedometer thinking I was way over the speed limit and I was doing 40mph. A few miles after that I stalled at a 4 lane stoplight. Made it back to work safely and took a hundred miles before I felt comfortable in traffic.

I got my Ninja 400 last month and rode it around the neighborhood after bringing it home in my buddy's truck. The first time riding it reminded me of my first time skiing a black diamond when I was 14. It's much scarier to think about than it is to actually do. Once you get going you just have to remember your training and be aware of your speed and surroundings.

I kept it for 6 months, then traded it in for a Moto Guzzi V7. The Ninja was a wonderful bike to learn on, but was uncomfortable on longer trips, which is the kind of riding that I enjoy the most. In the end it simply came down to preference. I have nothing bad to say about the Ninja.

I bought a 2016 V-Star 650 last spring right after passing the course. Trailered it home. Took it out the next day. Wasn't too nervous as I had just taken the course. Was more nervous about stalling the bike and pissing off other drivers than crashing the bike. Day one was driving around the city. Day two went out on the highway. Best weekend.

I was already at the age of 50 when I bought my first bike. I bought it in Helsinki and had to drive it home 500 km north. In the beginning I was a bit nervous but as soon as I left the ring road and reached the countryside it became more calm and it was a great ride. I could even have continued further but the saddle of my Rebel 500 is very painful after a long ride. I had about 8 hours of driving lectures when I passed the test and I would say that is really the minimum. Some very talented beginners can maybe do it with only 5 hours of lectures. Now I have had my Honda Rebel for 3 years and maybe it's time for something bigger. Maybe an Africa Twin or a HD Heritage Classic or Low Rider st. Thanks for the video!

Didnt have my M endorsement, yet. Planned to get back to Kentucky and use the on-base MSF course. Till then, i just did a bunch of easy laps around the neighborhood to get used to the bike. That was Dec 2008. Bike now has over 36,000 miles on it.

I just got my first bike at the beginning of January. Went with a 2023 Honda rebel 500. Was gonna get it from the Honda that’s less than 10 miles from my house but they been closed since November after trying a few other Honda dealers I ended us 25 miles away getting my new bike. Was nervous through the whole buying process knowing I’m about to have to ride 25 miles first time on the road. But when I threw my gear on and got on the bike I seemed to calm right down and it was mostly a wonderful ride home. Had stalled it a couple times at lights and went wide in a turn, was lucky I was all alone when it happened.

Have 250-350 miles on it, waiting for salt to be off roads to ride more in March or late Feb when it gets above freezing in my area. (Got full armor gear and 4 season gear since riding it home, have worn insulated armor gear head to toe since bringing it home.)

Yam Dawg, keep dropping these videos please! Very educational and informative to say the least. You highlight and hit the marks the new riders would not expect.
Which in return, you are providing people a stress free way to get into riding. Awesome! I can’t wait to see your next video to enrich my mental.
I got my first bike, a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 650R. I had my buddy ride it to his house. And then went and completed the MSF course. I went and got my bike from my buddy’s house and rode it back to my house with no issues.
I planned a route on side roads that got me home. I practiced riding around my neighborhood and a city park parking lot to practice slow speed maneuvers. I didn’t feel comfortable driving on roads or the highway until I could do figure 8’s within 3 parking spaces, using just throttle and rear brake. And practiced until I mastered counter steering, braking, and gear shifting. After a couple of weeks and about 25 hours of practice. I felt confident to hit the streets. And I hit them so hard, I felt like I was Yammie on the bike 😅
I now have a 2006 GSXR 1000, and I practice everytime before I ride this bike. I have a lot of confidence while riding, and that is because I practiced until my skills became natural. Not having ABS, hasn’t affected my riding.
But, it changed the way I ride. I learned from you Yam, that every bike is not the same.
2 days ago, I just bought my son a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 400 with ABS. I drove it to his High School Parking lot and had him walk the bike and practice applying the brakes. Then, running and applying the brakes. After 30mins, I showed him every part of the bike. And had him riding his bike within 10mins. He is now doing figure 8’s within 3 parking spaces and next week he will be taking his MSF course. Riding his 400, I showing him techniques on his bike. I see that having a beginner bike, is the best option for any new rider!

Took my MSF course in early November 2022 (with neither prior riding experience nor ever driving a stick shift car), got my M endorsement end of the month, and bought a 2020 R3 from a private seller early December. Trailered it the 1+ hour route back home w/ a U-Haul motorcycle trailer (and had to learn how to strap the bike down safely). Spent the first few weeks riding the neighborhood until I mustered enough courage to get on the freeway to go get gas. Stalled plenty of times on the road but drivers were pretty patient if I'm being honest. Since then have been riding a little further each time on my usual route and getting more and more comfortable. Thanks YN for being a GREAT resource! I'm in Austin so maybe I'll see you around.

My first bike....I'll never forget it. 2003 Vulcan 750. $4k bucks in hand and off to Motorcycle Emporium in Maryland. They let me put around in the lot for a few minutes and then we signed papers. Pulled out of there and stopped at the first parking lot on the way. Not because I was freaked out or anything. I just needed to hop off and look at her. The rest of the 30 minute ride home was mostly inclined intersections so I learned friction zoning fast. The feeling of flying and freedom made most of the butterflies go away. It's funny. I've forgotten a lot of other firsts in my life but not the first day as a rider.

I practiced in my yard and spent hours riding around my house before I ever touched the road. The bike will handle grass just fine but it’s not intended for it so it forced me to be cautious and careful on the controls. And my first wreck was you guessed it in the yard. My local shop delivered my first bike for me because I didn't have a license yet, I don't remember how much they charged, but it was worth it. Keep point for me, if something doesn't feel right, don't ride. I've had this happen several times when just going out for a ride, I would rather be safe than have a bad accident and know that I had a bad feeling about it. You could put yourself in a bad situation if you're hyper alert and expecting something bad to happen. It's easy to overlook small obstacles when looking for the big ones.

After an MSF course on a 125cc bike and 3 test rides that were like 10 miles each (2 of which on an 1,133cc bike) I decided to go with an 1,811cc Indian. I flew one-way to San Diego, CA and rode it over 1,000 miles back home to western Texas. A little over 400 miles the first day, a little over 600 miles the second day. It was also below freezing temperatures with rain the last 40 miles. Hell of a first run lol

I just got a 2009 V Star 650 5 days ago. Day 1 I was nervous as hell. But Day 2 I figured I cant keep bringing gas cans to fill it, so took a trip to the station. And next thing I knew I did a tour around town, putting on 20ish miles on Day 2. Looking for any excuse to ride now with the unseasonably warm weather. I mostly kept to twisty backroads but really I find them more intimidating than a highway now. Fun, but I cant ignore the potential for not my own error, but someone else to drift into my lane. I think this is the start to a great thing. Just wish I started sooner than 36.

Passed the MSF several years ago and trailered my 81 honda gl500 silverwing, needed tons of work only rode it a couple miles or so, replaced head gaskets, thermostat, cooling fan, front brake pads, rebuilt the front caliper and the rear brake drum, replaced the tires and a bunch of other work, then got her going again, rode like 20 more miles or so, only to snap the head cover bolt off into the head doing a retorque and valve clearance check 😢. I recommend getting a gently used or new but cheap starter bike in great working condition. Don't get a project bike and spend more time wrenching than riding.
So naturally I found a gently used, 1900cc Yamaha Stratoliner for super cheap. And then rode it for an hour and a half back home. 😅 Thankfully all was well but the first 15-20mins was rough as I went from a little 500 to 1900 low end torque monster and hadn't ridden a bike in a couple of years.
Don't do what I did. 😅 All went well and I love the bike but if you're NOT comfortable with the basic operation of a bike. Then please dont get a heavy 800lb muscle bike even though they are typically going for much better prices than newer starter bikes.

Buying my first bike was a bit nerve wracking. I was excited and admittedly very nervous. I was trying out an Indian Scout realized that it was waaaaaay too much bike for me and was introduced to the Royal Enfield Continental. I felt a lot more confortable riding it around, it was much cheaper, and while the cafe racer style was a bit hard on my back, this bike is really easy to work with, ride, and modify. I had my truck with me, but my nerves would’ve been too much for me either way, so I had the dealership drop it off. (At no charge I might add, thanks Indian OKC)! I’ve put over 1k miles on it and am looking forward to some summer day trips this year.

Just bought my first bike, I was fully confident that I was going to be able to ride my bike out of the dealership after purchasing. My only practice was in a parking lot a few times with some buddies…yeah..dropped my bike and decided to wait until I could get someone to ride it home for me. I’m happy I decided to wait, even happier about my purchase! (Kawasaki Z500!)
MSF course is booked and I have my permit, but parking lots only for me for the next little bit! Any advice is much appreciated, I’ve been excited to join the community for a long time :)

I FEEL like a new rider, but I'm a re-entry rider after 20 years of not riding. I was young then and could push start a bike if needed. I just bought a bike YESTERDAY and I'm the same rider I was in my mind, but my body has aged and I have arthritis in my left knee and had a right knee replacement. My fear is red lights and putting my feet down. Can I hold the bike up ? I can in my driveway and I can maneuver it easily, but when I went to take it on its maiden voyage this morning I was SO shaky I turned it off and went inside. I am not afraid of riding, I'm afraid of stopping and falling. What a great idea of parking lot practice. I will do that 100%.

MSF is a must have in my opinion. Also if buying a used bike, best bet is to follow a simple rule. If it doesn't run and doesn't ride then don't buy it. I made that mistake once, never again will I buy a bike I can't ride immediately.

I picked up my bike a year ago, put about 2600 miles on it so far. i'd be interested in content focused on returning to the season, what makes a good day/weekend trip, and what's next after you have some dirt under your fingernails. Ha ha ha. A lot of dealers don't care if you have a M class. I know a bunch of big ones like RideNow don't care. They won't let you test ride it if you don't have an M, but you can sign paperwork, and ride away without anything. They put it in the personal responsibility category. "Hey, we just sold you the bike. We didn't tell you to ride it without a license."

I had my first bike delivered to me. I actually failed my riding test 2 seconds into it...classic mistake of looking down at the line I wasn't supposed to cross instead of where I wanted to go and drove right over the line and an instant fail. I went ahead and bought my bike the next day and had it delivered 3 days later, retested the day after that and passed. I can only imagine the added pressure of driving away from a dealership alone and new to riding. My first ride was around the block in my quiet neighborhood with my family there "cheering" we on. Truthfully I planned to have my bike delivered anyway just to avoid the pressure of a first ride in traffic.

my very first time riding a motorcycle i had just purchased a used dual sport off craigslist. i had a friend ride with me so they could drive my car home and be my navigator since we were about 80 miles away. i understood the main controls well enough just hadn’t ever tried. first few miles were a little nerve racking but i learned on the long trek to the house.
was it the smart way to do it? probably not. did it work out? yep. i took it easy while i was getting the kinks out. but it didn’t take long to have the confidence to make it home.
after i sold that bike i took a 6 year break. my second bike i bought brand new from the dealership and it was almost like my first purchase all over. rode a couple laps around the parking lot while i got reacquainted with how it felt to ride. the most nerve racking part though was going from a 250 and taking a 6 year break without touching a bike to a 790 Duke. it was almost like starting out with a big naked as my first bike. but after about 5 or 6 miles of stop and go i knew i’d made the right choice.
after having my second bike for a week i completed the msf course and got my m class endorsement. may not have done it in the right order and may have gotten too big of a starter bike but i’m glad i went 790 over 390.

I bought my 2021 cbr1000rr from one of the biggest dealerships in Arkansas. I’ve been riding most of my life. I started early with dirt bikes, and graduated to street bikes a decade ago. This is the first one I’ve gotten from a dealership, though. I found out my license didn’t have an M endorsement on it at that dealership. I took the test and passed ten years ago, and have a receipt from the dmv and my permit from when I passed, but they never put the endorsement on my license, for whatever reason. I’ve since gotten it, but the dealership didn’t bat an eye when it came to me leaving without one. Lol. They also let me leave with the chain slapping, and without any adjustment to my suspension at all. Lol. These bikes are set up from the factory for a 180-200 pound person, and I weighed 155 pounds then. I adjusted the chain myself, but I wasn’t happy that they didn’t check anything like that before I left. I bought it a little over an hour away from where I live. Most of these people don’t care what happens after you leave. I had a place shortly after I bought my first street bike adjust my chain for me, and they didn’t tighten the axle nut. I found out it had fallen off when 15 minutes down the freeway I noticed that when I let off the throttle my rear end shook almost uncontrollably. It was a 2006 cbr600rr. Boy, did they not enjoy that call and having to pick me and the bike up on the side of the road. 😂
