- Trigger warning Cruel and racist language (N-word and the likes) is enunciated in this audiobook version. Some listeners have taken issues with it, hence this disclaimer. My view: the n-word is loaded with hate and has a twisted history. It's absolutely horrid to use the n-word in our daily lives no matter who you are. But in historic literature, it has had and still has a place. Ms. Morrison wrote those words out without censoring them for a reason. Please: if you cannot accept the fact that the n-word is pronounced in this audiobook, please kindly choose a version that does not offend your sensibility. Thank you for stopping by.
Starting in 2016 Black History Month, to honor the Pulitzer Prize awarded writer Toni Morrison and her soul-penetrating stories, and also to cultivate my voicing interest, I will attempt to narrate the novel Beloved by chapter. This is the pilot chapter. I do not own any copyright, and will not be posting any text to avoid copyright issues. Thank you all for listening to it! Happy to make adjustment for better performance if you'd kindly indicate in the comments! :)
Update (3/10/2016): Thank you for the listening in! I've hence uploaded Chapter 2 of the novel here: • YQ Audio for Novel - B... .
Update (4/10/16): Thanks for waiting, all! Chapter 3 is now available at: • YQ Audio for Novel - B... !
Peace! - Zábava
Hi there. Thank you for doing this for free. Much love to you and to the great Toni Morrison 🙃
Thank you for posting this! Toni Morrison (aka Chloe Mae Wofford from Lorain, OH, next door to where I grew up) is my fav author & this is my fav novel. She wanted you (the reader) to work whilst reading (or listening to) it. For the students here, many doing assignments- try reading her 1st novel, ‘The Bluest Eye.’ I often included it as one of the texts in my college courses (eg, feminist psychology or social psychology classes). When Toni Morrison died, I received emails from former students who had become fans after reading ‘The Bluest Eye.’ She was such a brilliant wordsmith & a lifelong inspiration for me.
I cannot put to words how grateful I am of you for posting this ❤️
Thank you for taking the time to read this and post it for free! This has been super helpful for school! 😊💕

Thank you so much for making this for free. It must’ve taken so much effort and I really appreciate it. I needed to read this book for school and I couldn’t afford to buy all my school books otherwise so this is a great help! Ik you’ve been receiving comments about not saying the N-Word; I’m an English Major at a top research university in the US and while it’s really uncomfortable, all my English classes included that word when written in literature and the professors would say it albeit uncomfortable. Please don’t delete the videos, we really need and appreciate them. Thank you
this is a changing standard. i also come from the same background, english lit major at a top university, but we no longer use slurs in the classroom, especially the N-word. if there is need to say it, a Black professor with a better background and knowledge of the slur will use it instead.
Thank you years later, mal most a decade and this is still so helpful so many ❤❤❤
Bro said the n word so casually 😂
Fr bro coulda skipped it 💀
Thank you soo much ❤ I needed this for school
Love how active you are with your audience. Also fantastic reading

We shall not erase history as history is what makes sure things do not repeat. If the word is in the book, she shall read it as the author portrays the story. To not do as it is wrote is to do the author and person it’s about is to take away the main characters suffering. A whip or chains will offend many but it should not be discredited due to someone discomfort as there was actual individuals that suffered such fates. We do not strip our ancestors of their stories being sensitive to what had happened. Listen to their truth with an open mind and an open heart as the authors main focus is for EVERYONE to feel HER PAIN AND SUFFERING. Respect peoples voices even if it’s not something you’d say today, it was something said if that era.
I love the book and the movie
So helpful !
She reads it greatly
Thank you.
thank you

PLEASE the next time don't ignore punctuations and take breaks!!!!! It was hard for me to tell who was saying what or if it was even a dialogue at all. Regardless, thank you!
What is the background static?
That's the sound of you being too cheap to buy the audiobook.

Do you think you can do Jazz by Toni Morrison?
Hi there, thank you for the recommendation! I'll check it out, you just gave me the idea to finish her trilogy! lol
Oh god I hope not!
Thanks 😁
i don't know if it's just me but is the audio unstable? I usually listen to music on another tab at lower volume than the audiobook tab but this keeps going from low to high and throwing my concentration out of wack 😕

Hiya don't be sorry - that's what the comment section is for :) Have a great one!
20:30 she said fucking but not in book
Hi there, not sure what you meant, but 20:30 didn't have "fucking" even in the reading. But on 21:37, there is the word "fucking" -in fact, also in the book on Page 13, Line 5 in the First Vintage International Edition, June 2004 (red cover), when discussing the conditions of Garner's slave men prior to Sethe's arrival. Thanks for listening.

As a non black person you should not be saying the n word in this and you should know why. The story could of been conveyed without you saying it and as a blk person im uncomfortable with how comfortable you were saying that.
Original "Hi, your feeling is valid, and as a result, I will delete all the chapters." -- Update: Hi Abigail, I am glad that you brought it up, and this is a moment when conversations could happen. And again, your feeling of discomfort and concern is valid. What you might not know is that every time when was doing the recording, I cringed every time as I had to vocalize the word -- it vividly portrays the cruelty, atrocity, and dehumanization toward the black community by slavery and white supremacy. I'm not sure if it still is the best approach to delete all these videos - because I have gotten feedback from numerous young students who felt these videos helped with their coursework, and I have a hunch that the usefulness of these videos might outweigh the downside. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but I did not turn on monetization for my channel because of these videos, as profiting from any form of black sufferings should not be ok. My question for you if you could kindly enlighten me: What do you think would be an appropriate approach to address the issue? Perhaps I can add a disclaimer at the top of the description regarding the the N word and its context in Morrison's work?
@@WhyQueueCue I think that a disclaimer is a great idea. Additionally I would stop saying the word and instead specify that you will be taking a brief pause in place of reading it aloud. I am not a person of colour, so I can’t speak as to wether or not it appropriate to change the slur to “negro” given the historical context, but if that is alright, it could be a good alternative as well.
She isn’t saying to you or to anyone. She is reading a book to you for free. If you are so offended go read it yourself.
And you must hate rap ;)
@Time - Traveling Wage Slave thank you. That’s what I’ve been saying. At least one person has some sense.
As a black person myself I absolutely disagree. Context is important. Censorship is erasure. If there is someone out there listening who doesn't have the book to follow along, it's important to include all language as written so they can feel the impact of the words as the author intended.
yo ur not black dont say the n word even if this is for an audiobook...
snowflake
@@grandpagrubber nahhhhh She’s in the wrong… ur a snowflake for not being able to comprehend that.
Next time skip over the n word thanks 🙏🏽
Chareese Mollet obviously no one should use that word excessively, but this is a piece of literature that centers around slave experience and other relevant historical topics. Of course it is unacceptable to use that word in casual or everyday conversation, but in this context it’s purpose is just to accurately detail/portray the time period that the story is meant to take place in. So in this case, it’s totally fine. It’s one thing to just say it whenever, but when using it because it is in the literature you are reading, it’s not being used personally by the reader to intentionally offend anyone belonging to the African American community, nor are they using it in actual conversation as a derogatory slur.
D
Thank you both for your replies, and sorry that I've been late to respond. I feel unsure of what to do next. Unfortunately, I just received another comment from a black listener who expressed high level of discomfort regarding "how comfortable" I "was reading the N word out loud" - although ofc every time when I read the word, it was as if the horror of slavery and systemic and institutional anti-blackness materialized right in front of me. To me, like you said, Gracious Rosebud, the word is very specific and intentional in Toni Morrison's Beloved as a tool to illustrate just exactly how cruel, dehumanizing, and violent the treatment of the white society in that era really was toward black people. The N word is not part of my vocabulary at all outside of reading this novel, and it shouldn't be. In fact, I police my Chinese friends when they deploy words in Chinese that have derogatory connotation toward the black community. I almost deleted all these videos, but I think I should have another approach.
@@WhyQueueCue it’s a book. People give me shit when we read books like this out loud in class, but that’s what written and that’s the words the author intended the reader to read/hear. Do what you think I is right but I think it’s best to just read the book as is.
Anyway thanks Sooo much for this upload. Really appreciate the time you put in.
Ignore the naysayers.
NO, DON'T!! If Toni used it, she should say it! Why don't you monitor the people around you in real life?? Probably because you'd be a Karen. Write Toni and berate Her?
This recording sounds like my 10 year old brother rambling about the grass hopper he found at school while we stand in the middle of a highway. If you are still struggling to speak the english language audio books are not the career path to undertake. I am only upset because this is the only audio available for free and God knows I am not actually going to read the book for my literature class. For the time being I am forced to listen to you mumble indefinitely and though I would rather shove tooth picks under my toenails I want to get an A. If anyone has any suggestions for me please let me know
She's doing it for free, man. Don't be mean.
@@nitzans I understand your logic Nitzan and I do appreciate the reader's intentions. However, if I took a shit and gave it to a homeless person to eat would he be forced to consume it under the ideology of 'beggars can't be choosers'? My criticism may be harsh but you cannot fairly deem it uncalled for.
@@Opinions4Free audible free trial. Seriously though you're an asshole
I have some advice, read it yourself!! it's not that hard. don't be lazy and actually try like she is. like you said, the girl is literally struggling with her English but proceeded to narrate the book, even for people who don't deserve it :). reading the book is definitely easier than shoving toothpicks under your toenails. you got it buddy!
you suck. hope you failed.
How bad reading is that
an amateur and stilted reading of this magnificent novel that does a disservice to this author. Awful ! Awful! Stop it! No more please.
Buy the official audiobook then
this chick read an entire book out loud so people can have a free alternative to the offical audiobook. I'd be a little more grateful if I were you.
Seriously fuck you. It’s free
