The main reason why the streets of Namibia are empty is because there is not much business is done on the streets. Namibians go to shopping malls and have isolated marketplaces. is just how the country is well organized. Pedestrians are rare to find in Namibia because the transportation system is also convenient for everyone and affordable.

I travel africa and realised that the reason streets are full in africa is coz municipalities allow people to trade on the streets. If those people were not allowed to be on streets they will be empty. Look at Lusaka now. If u were in Lusaka May last year and go there now u will be shocked as to what happened to CBD. THE CBD was chaotic until government decided to ban trading in CBD last year and send people to designated points. Since then Lusaka CBD is no longer congested. The hawkers dirtify cities and towns. In Namibia trade is only at designated points mainly far outside CBD.

Namibia population is 3,2 million in 2023. 2.6 million was last census of 2011. The latest Census was last year 2023. Windhoek has a population of 500,000 people. One thing I know is that even if Windhoek had 2 million people, the streets will still be empty coz Namibians dnt do trade on the streets. The streets in Namibia towns are only full Monthend. Infact if u arrive in Namibia Monthend, u will not believe its the same place that was empty. After month end they withdraw from CBD. Its also full from 4h30 pm Monday - Friday when people are knocking off from work.

This is interesting. How did all these Bantus end up with similar sounding names for ugali? The fact that maize reached Africa in the 16th century when the modes of travel and communication were limited, that's a very long distance to travel by foot. Maybe it was a staple of common Bantu ancestors, and maize replaced an ancient grain or cassava.

@@M_KK Yes, millet and sorghum were probably the original grains used for making the dish but when maize entered the scene, it quickly gained popularity due to its widespread availability and affordability. The ingredient changed, but the meal remained the same. It must have been a revered food, judging by how the name stuck. Perhaps the original name the Bantu progenitors used was something grand like “Obosimamah” meaning the meal that makes you stand firm against the challenges of the gods. 😄Or it could just be a humble name meaning “pounded” due to how it was prepared. In Kenya, the millet variation is still available, although its less common. It's prized for its nutritive value despite being more challenging to cook due to its sticky nature.
