  • The Cog Railway Train closed in 2017 for a major overhaul including brand new trains, new track changing from wood to steel, new visitor center with a beautiful new gift shop, exhibits and restaurant. Delicious Donuts! It reopened in 2021 offering incredible views once again traveling in the new cog railway train to the top of Pikes Peak. Best thing to do in Colorado Springs.

    When I got to the top of pikes peak my blood oxygen level went from 97% down to 88% and we felt light headed and it feels like your moving in slow motion. One employee said that it took him a month to get used to the elevation.

    When I was a truck driver, I drove a Freightliner bobtail up to the peak some 20 years ago - when I was young and adventurous ha ha. It's 40 to 50 degrees colder at the peak and a lot less oxygen, bring a coat and winter hat is a good idea if you want to spend some time outside at the peak. I did it once and it was awesome, but no one told me you can hardly breath at that elevation.

    We drove it 10 years ago when we were attending a military conference at Peterson AFB, and when we got to the top and were looking down at Colorado Springs (which sits about 7900 feet ASL) it was a surreal moment considering we were stationed at Scott AFB in Illinois that sits in the highest point in the county (861 feet ASL) mind-boggling for us "flat-landers". A pilot in our group said if we were on an airplane at 14K and lost cabin pressure the oxygen masks would deploy. Kind of put things into perspective.

    The Pikes Peak Cog Railway had first started back way into 1890 where it opened. And was ran by six Cog Railway steam locomotives. Today four of them survived in preservation today. Locomotive #1 is display at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado, Locomotive #2 is displayed at a park in Manitou Springs, Colorado, Locomotive #4 displayed at the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams, Arizona (It used to operate at the Pikes Peak Cog Railway as a heritage railroad), and Locomotive #5 is displayed at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The railroad also has gas power, snowplowing, and Diesel Rail Cars that were built between the mid and late 20th Century. Now they use these new Diesel Electric locomotives that were built by Stadler Rail in 2021 at the country of Switzerland for this mountain railroad.

      @@thegoforthgang326 No problem. I have been here back in July 2016 and June 2022. I am also glad that locomotives #1 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in April 1890), #2 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in May 1890), #4 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in January 1897), and #5 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in April 1901) are preserved now. I have seen their #1 displayed at the Colorado Railroad Museum back in July 1st 2016, and July 1st 2022 along with Gas Rail Car #7 (Built by Colorado Midland Shops in 1938) and Diesel Electric locomotive #9 (Built by General Electric in 1946) on display there. I even got to see Diesel Electric Railcar #15 (Built by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works in 1963 located in Switzerland there) displayed at Woodland Park, Colorado after the ride here in 2022.

    My opinion after just coming back. Drive up to mile 13 then come back down. That is the most beautiful views you’ll see the entire way. After Mike 13 it is dead and also DEATHLY TERRIFYING TO DRIVE. I drove up to mile 16 then took a bus the rest of the ways up. But wouldn’t do it again. I’d drive to Mike 13 then drive back down. Up to mile 13 it the best part. Plenty of areas to stop. A gift shop at mioe 13 and an area to walk around there. After Mike 13 it’s terrifying.

    Paid $75 for a reserve ticket on the 2 seat side but the 3 seat side has the better views. I thought the price was too high but the only alternative is to drive to the top and I’m sure the drive back down would do some damage to your brakes.

    • @thegoforthgang326
      @thegoforthgang326  Před rokem +1

      The cog lets you look out without having to pay attention to the driving, but I would think the drive would give prettier views. Yea, he talked a lot and gave lots of history, but he didn't talk at all going back down. The biggest thing we didn't like about the cog was you don't get to stay up on top very long. 20 minutes total to look around, go to the bathroom, shop at the giftshop and maybe get snacks. so we felt very rushed to get back on the cog. So that would make driving more attractive to spend longer at the top.

    • @jayusa879
      @jayusa879 Před 11 měsíci +2

      The drive is scary as hell there are no guard rails on the road you drive off the road you will die. And coming
      down your brakes get so hot there are areas to stop and let them cool off if you don't you will be out of control unable to brake.

    • @user-yb7eh3yh3l
      @user-yb7eh3yh3l Před 11 měsíci

      @@jayusa879 I was the one that originally asked the question. We went in July. I drove up to mile 16…. It was nothing until Mile 13, after mile 13 it was the most terrifying thing I have ever done in my lifetime. I can’t believe they let people make that drive. Thank you Jesus that we took the bus to the top from mile 16 cause no way could I have survive driving an inch further. I’d never do it again !!! I’d take the cog or have a tour bus take me the entire way.
