- They make the pencil better at the same price. good

- If you want MacOS on a 2000 usd machine, get a macbook pro.

Bezels contain the camera, etched glass over camera lens would be disaster. Circle cutout for camera would look worse.

If they can stop at edges of the display with precision, then they can leave a gap for the camera.
The matte screen covers have the camera hole and it looks fine

now why cant the macbooks just put the camera in the bezel, instead of creating a gross notch.
The A14 came out in the iPad first, but they waited until the iPhone event to go into more detail on it. It'll be the same here with when M4 is in Macs, and the enhanced cores in the A18 Pro.
My hot take is get rid of the regular iPad and keep the iPad Air as the “standard” iPad.
Well we have MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, so that idea would mirror the Mac lineup pretty well (plus iPad Mini of course)

I was peeved with the pencil thing at first, but when someone mentioned how they had to change the magnets b/c of the camera it makes sense. The other option would be to put the charging mechanism on the short side, but that would be awkward as well.
Looks like they are going to just have the two pencils moving forward, so it would also be strange to have a Pencil 3, if the only other one is the USB-C version.
It's really dumb that you can't get the textured glass on all the pros.
Imagine if all the Pros came with the pencil this year... That would've been something. They could EASILY do that. That would've made allot of sense.

12:40 "iPad Air shouldn't exist." - Actually, the 13" air with the pencil pro is the perfect product for student artists. The 11" feels too small at times when drawing, the 13" is like an A4 piece of paper. The M2 chip gives you more than enough layers, the M4 is too OP to justify the price leap.

Apple is trying to justify the Air’s existence by jacking the Pro prices, even if jacking them is somewhat justifiable. Before the base model price difference was $200 ($599 and $799), now it’s $400 ($599 and $999).
Its the other way around they are trying to justify the iPad Airs existence as an intermediary between the iPad and the iPad Pro. The M2 makes perfect sense here as a step up from the M1 and, from a manufacturing costs perspective. I know TSMC is still having issues with the 3nm process a year after it debuted. They have to pass those costs of fixing the process to their customers or in this case their only customer for the special 3nm process they created for Apple. The M4 is still too expensive for the average consumer. Imagine it adding another $400 to the cost of the iPad Air and then leaving it only 50 to 100 below the costs of a pro. Think about what kind of effect that would have on university and college students. Also the base iPad is still the device used in most schools for elementary and junior high. they have to take a hit on it to ensure market penetration. students.
The fact that Sam is also trying to justify the new Air's pricing is hilarious. The Air's should've been $150 (for the 11' Air) and $300 (Air 13') cheaper than what they should be. I actually agree with Andrew (Tailosive Tech) that the Air's are over priced. And that lasat gen refurbished Pro's are actually a better deal for the M2 chip than the new Air's

They are upset that Apple didn’t turn the iPad into a Mac but I don’t know why the boys ever thought that would happen. They’re different devices and should always remain that way other wise an entire product category becomes redundant. They sound like a couple F150 owners yelling about how the new Miata is the worst pickup truck they ever seen.

Couldn’t watch this whole thing but wanted to see what they said about the keyboard. I think it’s a great upgrade. Bigger trackpad, function row, haptic feedback and aluminum base. And you wanted more ports and different design? I thought was already a great design.
From a non-tech consumer perspective, making the iPad Pro lighter made sense. iPads are meant to be portable, I could fit the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard in the bag and not worry about it.
I also agree that the chips are becoming powerful but the iPadOS limits its capabilities. For the price you can just opt for a Macbook Pro because that's a better value for the money. I've never really understood why some regular people would choose using the iPad as their "computer" until I saw a professional who's in meetings with clients in a restaurant, presenting using a 12.9 inch iPad Pro, and then pulling out the Apple Pencil for signing a contract right away. The person could have easily used an iPad Air for that workflow, but I get that he wanted a bigger screen and only the iPad Pro had that. So now, Apple introduced a bigger iPad Air and that made a whole lot of sense.
Though the tech community has criticized Apple for the release, I finally understood now why these existed. They probably have a market study where majority of the iPad/Pro users are not entirely the tech community.
Debuting a thinner form factor in the iPad Pro have made the lineup confusing because of what Apple has established with the Air and Pro lines.
Before: Air means lightweight, Pro is for Pro users
Now: Air means basic, entry-level. Pro means Extra.
If you REALLY want or need something specific, may it be a feature, compatibility, thinner hardware, accessories - you go for the Pro. And that's how Apple charges you a premium. Totally unfair tbh.
Why do complain about apple removing a camera, but make fun of people that use iPads to take pictures and videos? Make it make sense
Insanity the amount of money to upgrade memory when it reality it is cheap. What’s also insane is that an 11” ipad with an oled screen and a more powerful chip starts at the same price as a 6.1” pro iPhone which is much smaller and less powerful.
The 10 hour battery life is what got me. Insane that it’s not more with the most PoWeRfuLl and EfFiCeNt M4

The rumored iPad MagSafe wireless charging and reverse wireless charging seems to be long forgotten now? I forget whether this was dismissed a while back?
They also didn’t tell us that they got rid of the ultra wide camera and one of the studio quality speakers. My current iPad Pro third generation has those two features. I also was surprised that they didn’t mention anything about battery life, which I was hoping it would be better but…at least it is the same (and not worse).

@@anianii They didn't remove a speaker, the new iPad Pro has one less studio quality microphone (I think its the front facing one that's usually next to facetime camera). We will have to see if quality is affected.

Disagree on the proposed iPad lineup. I think the lineup is perfect right now just like the iPhone, a range of options. iPad = iPhone SE, iPad Air = iPhone, iPad Pro = iPhone Pro. TBH iPad mini is the one out of place here. But gotta say the Apple Pencil situation is truly ridiculous.

As someone who commented about subscriptions on the last video thank you for revisiting the topic. I appreciate hearing that if you make a subscription that it would be additional content but not affect GB. Not sure that I love Sam’s idea of making the idiot bar the bonus content because as a listener that feels like a great part of GB, especially during the periods of the year when there is no news. At the end of the day though I’m sure anyone could look at any type of paywalled content and feel like they are missing out but as long as you guys are working hard to make sure that GB feel’s like the “full experience” with the bonus content not taking away from that I think the community will really appreciate this and it probably wouldn’t affect the amount of people who subscribe to the bonus. A “7”AM event for me in Australia was midnight, as opposed to 3AM. I got to bed at 6 but it was still nice to have the event not too late. So they probably had the even early to cater to an international audience
Jern your right. Not all yields are perfect so they use the binned chips in other products. Apple still names them the same chip but most other companies label them secretly (i.e. Intel’s i3 i5 i7 i9).
Also the whole bezels aren’t textured cause that would cause the front camera to not be clear.

I have an iPad Pro and a MacBook Air, I love the way both operating systems works independently. I’m wondering what if Apple bought MacOS Catalyst apps for iPadOS like they for iOS Catalyst apps for macOS, that would a better alternative rather than bringing MacOS to iPad or iPadOS having dual boot mode. macOS Catalyst apps on iPadOS would require an iPad with M Series chip and keyboard while developers can add Apple Pencil support iPad version of macOS Catalyst apps. I hope Apple brings MacOS apps to iPadOS as Catalyst apps, that way Apple can keep both iPadOS and macOS separate as well as makes pro users happy
I would have preferred Apple ditch the thinness, kept it thicker and added more battery capacity. surely they could have added a few more hours of use had they kept the previous form factor.

I use Logic Pro on my m1 iPad Pro and at times it slowed down, cpu or memory hits the wall. You guys just watch content or write scripts on iPad which is why you don’t get why it would’ve been better for the Air to get the m3 already and btw if all you do is watch content and use a document app on a app you wouldn’t need an M series chip either. .
Exactly. This change finally makes the air the clear "every day use" iPad. The Pro versions are not for the average consumer. These are the same people that will tell you the iMac 24" is a great family computer and the Mac Studio is for Pros. They would never tell you to get a tricked out Mac Studio to watch CZcams videos.

@@POVwithRC Sorry, I phrased that poorly. I just meant it has the same effect as a matte screen protector from the studio displays with and without the nano-texture. If someone wants to spend the money, they should feel free. I just meant that you can get a very similar effect on the cheaper versions for a lot less money.

Couple of things, Apple had an event the London at their HQ (Battersea), that’s the reason for the early start. Also Tim was wearing 1of1 Nike Air Max 86 designed on the iPad.
Apple Pencil makes more sense now than it did defore the event. There will be just Pencil and Pencil Pro in a couple years
The second camera could have been great for Vision Pro spatial camera
John. The Matt finish is only on the display and is inserted into the frame of the iPad. It’s gonna be bad enough as to how dirty the glass is going to get that you need a special rag to clean it. Much less the edges. The nano display must be clean in the specific way or you’re gonna ruin your device. Also, will you be staring at your screen OR the edge while working on the iPad????
The physical event was in New York. That’s why they started earlier. So they had more time for the hands on.
48:05 You download the mkv in 4k and then through it into „Hand Brake“ to convert it into mp4 thats playable. That’s unfortunately one of the only solutions
soooo, with regards to the removal of the iPad Air, if it wad deleted from the lineup that would mean if you wanted an iPad with a laminated display but didn't want the mini you'd be paying $999. iPad Air is at a pricing sweet spot....
The iPad Air needed M2 over M3 as apple want to get off that process node, M3 is one be removed fast.. Plus it makes iPad Pro seem like a bigger upgrade...

To touch on the pricing, im stoked the iPad Airs didn't change, the 10th Gen got cheaper, the iPad Pros weren't ridiculously priced. other than the nano textured glass and 13 inch models...
I think the main issue is that people think the iPad’s problem is that it doesn’t work like a computer. The first computer I’ve ever owned was a 15 inch MacBook air m2, and it was also my first personal computer. Aaaaand, coming from an iPad Pro user, i just dont get it. Everything about it feels cluttered : files management, app settings, window management, pro apps interfaces - like adobe - feel absolutely punitive to use. I think apple fixed all the issues i had with my 2018 iPad Pro with this new one (except battery life, I’m beyond shocked it wasn’t improved), and i seriously don’t want the iPad to just be a surface running macOS…
So if apple does a morning event that means the products going to be trash. That’s what I took from it 😂

Hey guys been following you since before the podcast and I agree it’s the #1 Apple podcast in the world!! However where I don’t agree is with your iPad line up. We need to get rid of the one iPad that doesn’t match the others. What do all but one iPad have in common? Laminated displays. And since the Air is no longer the lightest they need to drop that name and get rid of the cheap iPad. So then the lineup consists of iPad Mini, iPad (formerly known as iPad Air) in 2 sizes, and iPad Pro in 2 sizes. And that should be the line up, simple!

I guess my biggest issue with the new iPad Pro is that my old magic keyboard, and my Apple Pencil second generation will not work. So if I really want to get the iPad Pro and all the accessories, the price tag goes way up. Now, I am considering the iPad Air. I probably don’t need the iPad Pro, but I usually like the latest technology even though I probably don’t need it for what I use it for. Interestingly, I had an apple support chat the day of the event and they somewhat misled me since they said the old magic keyboard would work. But, as I look on the website, it says it does not. Not sure what I’m gonna do yet. Keep up the great work guys love the podcast! And, I love your channels.

38:23 side the mat glass has a special cloth to do wreck it perhaps where your fingers hold the iPad on the screen makes the edges of the Matt glass texture messed up. So their solution was to not put it on that area.

Apple put 2 huge expensive OLED panels on the iPad Pro so they have to take a camera and microphone away to make the price work or it would have been even more expensive.

They are most likely going to discontinue Apple Pencil Gen 1 and Gen 2 next year and then there will be just the Pencil and Pencil Pro. But for that to happen they also have to update iPad Mini and the entry level iPad (maybe) to be compatible with Pencil Pro. 🤷🏻♀

Don't forget that Apple also removed a microphone from the M4 iPad. The last two generations had four mics. The M4 iPad only has three microphones now.
The iPads are too expensive now. Apple needs the iPad to be priced like last years. I think the problem with software is the App Store. It costs too much now to be as developer for the App Store. I'm not talking about the 30% cut that is an industry standard. The cost to keep up with OS upgrades, app change requirements, yearly fees, etc. An app developer said it costs about $75k a year to keep a free app in the App Store. Fees, costs, labor, etc.
M3 also supported AV1, that’s something I was hyped about because I want to see a world where the CZcams app doesn’t kill my battery life

Think part of why Apple skipped the m3 processor for the iPad Air is due to that they want to move on to the new 3mm chip process. Apple was pretty much the only user of the current 3mm manufacturing process. It then makes sense to skip the m3 processor.

I was hoping for an OLED iPad Air, I would've bought one no question. If that didn't happen, I would've gone for an iPad Pro 11", but with the price change, I'm not really willing to. I practically only use iPads for content consumption.

When the products ship on Wednesday that's when the store update their retail side too. It's bizarre because if you go into store on Tuesday you can buy an M2 iPad Pro. If you go in on Wednesday, you can only buy the M4 one. They still show the M2's in store until they officially release on the 15th where everything will be swapped out overnight.
