Loretta Lynn is a country legend. She is a singer songwriter who's music has spanned 6 decades. She was also friends with the great late Patsy Cline. Her younger sister Crystal Gayle also is a great singer. She grew up dirt poor & stayed humble & true to her roots. The autobiographical movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" is worth looking at. Sadly we lost Loretta last year.
FYI there is a movie of the same name about Loretta's earlier life and career. My dad met her several times and adored her. Loretta wasn't afraid to tell the story that others shied away from. Check out her songs The Pill, Don't Come Home Drinking, You Ain't Woman Enough and her duet with the legendary Conway Twitty Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.
She wrote most of her songs, except for some her duets. She was so straightforward about certain subjects that some of her songs were boycotted by radio stations. She spoke the truth about a woman's life, and we loved her for it.
Loretta Lynn is my absolute favorite! She wrote 90% of her songs all from real life experiences. She married her husband Oliver "Doo" Lynn at age 15 and 4 kids by 20. She was best friends with Patsy Cline. A lot of her songs are from her marriage. Some of my favorites are "Fist City" "Don't Come Home Drinkin with Lovin on Your Mind" and "Your Squaw is On the War Path" and the song she wrote when her husband died "I can't Hear the Music Anymore".
Loretta got wealthy as a singing star, so she returns to the home that she grew up in. Nothing was left, but the floor and the memories. You have to see the movie Coal Miners Daughter.
Loretta is country as country can be. Who else could take the words tired and hard and make you believe they rhyme? All in all she had 14 songs that were banned by radio at some point. One of the most popular is The Pill.
She is one of the original queens of country music along with Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton. Like Dolly, Loretta wrote her own songs. If you can, check out the movie of the same name with Sissy Spacek as Loretta.
There have been 4 women designated "Queen of Country Music": Dottie West in the 50"s, Loretta in the 60"s, Dolly in the 70's, and Reba McIntyre in the 80's. Not sure what publication made the official designation but the names and decades fit.
I saw her live about 10 years ago. She came our did a few songs and then said to the audience, let me know what you want to hear and she did songs that were called out from us. She sounded great
She was quite the beauty in this video. Loved her spirit and dedication to her husband. I wish I could find a woman as dedicated as she was, from the stories I've heard.
True stories are the base for all her songs she sang about real life and that is why she was and still is so popular I am 56 yr old Hair Band and Classic Rock guy but I will listen to the Queen of Country Music anytime.
Please, please, please react to Fist City. This woman was a legendary badass. She has the most Number 1 songs that were hits despite them being banned by country radio. So many of her songs were banned and she didn’t give a sh*t about it.
Back in the 1960's we hardly ever knew what the artists looked like. Maybe on the record cover or a guest on tv shows. Maybe a fan magazine. No mtv. What you guys do is so great. But 24/7 availability is wonderful. Also people have much more expendable income now! Appreciate this age your in!!😊❤
There is a movie called Coal miners daughter!! U all should watch she had shes been trough a lot!! Her and Pasty Cline were best friends and one of her Twins are named Pasty after Pasty Cline.
I am 59 and love all kinds of music. But I grew up on these old country artists bcz that’s what my parents listened to. I saw many of them in person including her. Loretta is my all time favorite of these oldies. She holds a special place in my heart. I have a country playlist on my Spotify and have quite a few of Loretta’s songs on there so I still listen to her all the time. The movie is one of my all time favorites too of course!

This song always brings back the memory of seeing the Loretta Lynn biographical movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" at the drive-in movie theatre back around 1980 or so. It is still one of my favorite country songs--and movies. If y'all get the chance to watch the film, I highly suggest doing so.
met her at her home at hurricane mills, an old southern mansion between nashvill and memphis. beautiful place. we were standing on the road and she hollered at us to come up and we talked to her about 15 minutes. very sweet lady
It's really a tribute to people making the best of their circumstances for their family, mostly through uncompromisingly endless hard labor. But managing to keep a positive attitude around. It's something to be honored...
Ive only been to 4 concerts in my whole life, all Loretta Lynn, 1980 in Broward County Far,1981 ,then in 2005 in Asheville NC and 2012 at the Biltmore Estate at Asheville. She was the best # singer, lived a hard life,Patsy Cline took her under her wing and they wer close for about 2 years until mPatsy Death in a plane crash in 1963,Patsy Cline was just 30,Loretta Lynn was never the same again. Great stuff, guys! If you get a chance to see the fabulous movie Coal Miner's Daughter starring Cissy Spacek, you'll get the whole story of Loretta Lynn's life and the way she suffered when her friend Patsy Cline was killed.
Loretta has a sister named Crystal Gayle who was also a very successful country singer. (Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue) She was very well known for her loooong hair that went to the floor. Loretta and Crystal are cousins of country music legend Patty Loveless.
Loretta Lynn was working on the third or fourth of a 5 album contract , still writing and recording songs, when she passed away at 90. Her motto was Never Stop Working, Never Retire. She had to stop touring in her 80s due to health problems. She went from being born in a 2 room shack, to her Daddy buying a bigger cabin for $600, to getting married and starting a family as a teen, to moving to the state of Washington, to buying a ranch that included a mansion on the property AND THE TOWN OF HURRICANE MILLS, Tennessee! She had a Net Worth of $65MILLION when she passed away...but, stayed as humble as when she was dirt poor. She didn't call us fans...she called us friends! And she gave to us as much of her life (including building a campground for us on her ranch) as she could, trying to repay us for all we had given her life. She was always grateful her children didn't have to grow up poor like she did. A 60 year career, tons of records, tons of awards, tons of fame, and tons of money...and she just stayed Loretta Lynn, The Coal Miner's Daughter from Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. She said she just wanted to be remembered as just a good person. Rest In Peace.

Another great song about growing up in and around the coal mines is the song by Patty Loveless “ You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” performed live at the Austin City Limits. This is a very touching song and I think you both would enjoy it.

Got to see Loretta Lynn with Conway Twitty around 1971 Massey Hall Toronto, check out the two of them sometime, Lead me on might be a good one to start with
Phil, if you’re a history buff…the movie Coal Miners Daughter, starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones is well worth the watch!!! It’s a classic example of what talent and a LOT of hard work can get you! Plus her close friendship with Patsy Cline is showcased. Life was just as tough in the early years of her married life and career as it was in Butcher Holler! She was one determined lady and we are all better off because of it!!?
If you're a history buff you'd probably enjoy the songs of Johnny Horton. Battle of New Orleans, Sink the Bismark, Johnny Reb, North to Alaska. Whispering Pines is my favorite. He was killed in an auto accident at the age of 35. He was married to the widow of Hank Williams who died a few years before at the age of 29 in the backseat of a car from an overdose.
*The one thing you missed on those facts you mentioned about her is...a movie was made about her in the 80's called Coal Miner's Daughter & Sissy Spacek (hand picked by Loretta to play her) won a Golden Globe & Academy Award as best actress*
Y'all should watch the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" Sissy Spacek played Loretta Lynn and actually SANG all the songs in the movie. And the actress that played Patsy Cline in the movie also sang the Patsy Cline songs. There's also a movie about Patsy Cline.
movie: "Coal Miner's Daughter" 1980 (if you've already seen it, my apologies) Amazing Movie .. and Loretta Fully approved of the way it portrayed her life .. Sissy Spacek is Fantastic in it, along with Tommy Lee Jones .. Wow .
I would like to see y'all react to Elvis' "Love Me" performance on the Ed Sullivan Show and "Trying to Get to You", which i believe he performed for his '68 Comeback Special.
The Queen of Country Music!
“Fist City”, “The Pill”, “You Ain’t Woman enough to take my Man”
You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man) is a MUST!
Just to name a few
I LOVE Fist City!
Don't come home drinkin...
This song is autobiographical, being raised “Dirt Poor” is and was a real thing for many Appalachian Americans 💕

And Tommy Lee Jones playing her husband

Loretta is country as country can be. Who else could take the words tired and hard and make you believe they rhyme? All in all she had 14 songs that were banned by radio at some point. One of the most popular is The Pill.
Also Crystal Gail is her relative had several hits in the 80s and is also a great singer known for her long strait hair
Crystal Gayle was her sister
I loved the movie Coal Miner’s Daughter with Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn and Beverly D’Angelo as Patsy Cline…loved that sound track…

Loretta WAS country music. There’s a huge catalogue here for you. Fist City, Love Is The Foundation, Rated X. ❤
Love Loretta! My wife's favorite singer.
That same hard working dad gave us Crystal Gale as well. Two daughters with number one hits, isn't bad for old guy.

Her song of her early life. Wonderful. My grandparents listen to country so.. there you have it.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Loretta was country royalty. Such a beautiful, sweet soul, and incredibly talented to boot. I met her on a USO tour when I was stationed in Germany in the early 80's. I even got a kiss on the cheek! That is her natural pattern of speeech. Conway Twitty was her male singing partner for years. They were great together ❣️
Had to watch this again. Loved your reaction so much
Glad you enjoyed!
My grandparents were from west Tennessee but were still very poor as kids. I remember my Grandmother talking about being a sharecropper and having nothing to eat but wild plants. Grandaddy telling of working on the State road crew for 50 cents a day and being glad to get it.
Grandparents came from that neck of the woods, and a similar situation.
Wild 😮
Much love from West Virginia
Loved her and the movie❤
She has another song called Van Lear Rose. Which is a song about how her parents met.
Listen to The Pill. That song along with a couple of others got her banned from the radio.
She was just what she was and she wrote songs that were honest and straight forward.
An interesting connection with Peter Frampton: Pete Drake played lap steel for Loretta Lynn and gave Frampton his first talk box.
Loretta had 14 of her songs banned from the radio. That never kept them from going to number 1, though. She tackled subjects that were considered taboo and she also pissed many male dj's off in her day with her truths...lol! i have been a coal miner for 30 years
*The one thing you missed on those facts you mentioned about her is...a movie was made about her in the 80's called Coal Miner's Daughter & Sissy Spacek (hand picked by Loretta to play her) won a Golden Globe & Academy Award as best actress*
She was great! You should watch coal Miner’s daughter, the movie. Sissy Spacek, stars in it, and she did an amazing job!
Loretta was a great friend of patsy cline she named two of her daughters patsy and cline
Thank you both for listening and keeping her legend alive. I was raised on her music and I loved listening to her music
This song was her life...and she is a legend...also of note she's the godmother of modern motorcross..the Loretta Lynn's are happening right now...
If you guys have the time, "Coal Miners Daughter", (the Hollywood film) is very very enjoyable. Try to fit it in to your lives.
