"A Lot Like Me" from The Magician's Elephant | RSC's new musical first listen to Jack Wolfe

- Have a first listen to Jack Wolfe perform a track from the upcoming new musical, The Magician's Elephant.
Nancy Harris provides book and lyrics for the piece, which also has music and lyrics by Marc Teitler. It follows the story of an orphan boy, whose whole world is transformed when a magician conjures an elephant from the sky.
The show is set to run from from Thursday 14 October 2021 to Saturday 1 January 2022, and will be directed by Sarah Tipple, who was the associate director on the venue's hit musical The Boy in the Dress.
The principal cast includes Keisha Amponsa Banson (Matilda) as Gloria Matienne, Marc Antolin (Matilda) as Leo Matienne, Sam Harrison (Les Misérables) as Count Quintet, Forbes Masson (The Boy in the Dress) as Police Chief, Mark Meadows (Flowers for Mrs Harris) as Vilna Lutz, Alastair Parker (Matilda) as the Magician, Summer Strallen (Young Frankenstein) as Countess Quintet and Jack Wolfe (Pinocchio) as Peter Duchene.
Further cast comprises Sharif Afifi (Milliner), Alison Arnopp (Baker), Hannah Brown (swing), Michael Carolan (swing), Lucca Chadwick-Patel (Fishmonger), Stephen John Davis (Doctor), Zoe Halliday (The Elephant), Wela Mbusi (The Elephant), Suzanne Nixon (The Elephant), Wendy Somerville (Mrs Griswald) and Mandi Symonds (Sister Marie).
The Magician's Elephant is designed by Colin Richmond, with lighting by Oliver Fenwick, music supervision and direction by Tom Brady, vocal arrangement by Brady and Teitler, orchestrations by Sarah Travis and Teitler, sound by Paul Groothuis, movement by Francesca Jaynes, dramaturgy by Réjane Collard-Walker, puppetry direction by Mervyn Millar, puppetry design by Millar and Tracy Waller. i’ve never heard of shadow and bone (i might just check it out though) but i’m so glad jack wolfe is getting popular now! he’s absolutely brilliant in everything he’s in, so i’m really happy more people are finding out about this lad
I absolutely recommend shadow and bone! If you want to know more about Jack’s character specifically, you might want to read the book Six of Crows and be on the lookout for a character called Wylan.😉😉😉 Enjoy!

Haunting Voice. You can definitely tell this is a stage trained voice. The presence, clarity and sheer magnitude I could listen to this song on repeat for days. I can totally see you performing Marius in Les Miserables or Phillip Carlyle in The Greatest Showman and giving one of the most memorable performances in each part. You prove beyond a doubt that the best singers require the least orchestration. Absolutely One of A Kind.

I can’t help but imagine Wylan singing this directly after his one-night-stand with Jesper, so this is my self-indulgent hypothetical musical sequence/missing scene.
{Piano Introduction} The scene opens on a darkened room in the Slat. It’s crowded with a single bed, a small trunk, and a makeshift table that used to be an apple box. Clothes are strewn haphazardly across the floor. The camera pans slowly around towards the bed, revealing two figures. Outside the window, the moon shifts from behind the clouds to illuminate their faces.
{Key Change} Wylan turns his head away from the accusing light of the moon to look at Jesper’s sleeping form. His gaze softens. He begins to sing.
{In the dead of the night, while the whole world’s in slumber} Wylan looks at Jesper like he might disappear between one blink and the next.
{What is it you dream of?} Wylan’s eyes dart down to Jesper’s lips
{What is it you wonder?} He smiles softly as he sees that corners of Jesper’s mouth are turned slightly upward.
{Do you have a mother?} Wylan lifts his hand toward Jesper’s face.
{Far across the sea?} He gently moves one of Jesper’s curls back into place.
{Longing for her baby} As he takes his hand away, his fingers just barely brush across Jesper’s face towards his lips.
{Wondering where [he] must be?} Wylan’s fingertips hover for a moment, and Jesper stirs, before rolling over so his back is to Wylan, who draws his hand back as if he’s been burned.
{Alone here with no family} As the key changes, we see Wylan’s thoughts also take a darker turn.
{Under lock and key} The moonlight briefly shines on Jesper’s Dregs tattoo, as Wylan seems to realize that a relationship will never be in the cards.
{In so many ways} A look of deep sadness cross Wylan’s face.
{You’re a lot like me} He looks down at Jesper for what he thinks will be the last time.
{A lot like me} Wylan pulls away, mind made up to leave before Jesper gets the chance to leave him first.
{Piano Interlude} Wylan stands up and shrugs on his clothes. When he lifts his shirt off of the ground, the moonlight bounces off of two pearl-handed pistols nestled into a leather holster. Wylan slips his shoes on and crosses quietly over to the door. As the piano melody begins to descend into the minor key, he turns the door handle. He hesitates, but doesn’t look back before he opens the door and leaves, shutting it behind him silently, and making his way down the hallway.
{Do you have a sister?} Wylan passes a dark alcove where Inej waits in the shadows. {Someone you can tease?}
{Someone who you belong to?} Wylan doesn’t notice her, but Inej looks at him curiously before glancing back the way he had come.{Someone who you please?}
{Do you have a home?} Wylan makes his way down a set of stairs.
{Do you have a name?} His mind is still clearly on Jesper as he passes a dirty mirror {I look into your eyes and all I see is pain} The camera holds on his distorted reflection.
{Alone here with no family} Wylan rounds a corner
{Under lock and key} He brushes right past Kaz, who stops for a moment, tilting his head to follow Wylan’s progression.
{In so many ways} As Kaz observes Wylan, his gaze sharpens.
{You’re a lot like me} His expression turns calculating.
{A lot like me} The camera zooms out as a hint of a shark’s grin appears on Kaz’s face.
{I’ve lived my whole life not knowing for sure} Wylan steps out of the hallway onto the landing overlooking the Crow Club
{If someone’s out there for me} He crosses over to the steps separating him from the crush on the main floor.
{If there’s something more} He steps down into the crowd.
{Surrounded by people who never stop to see} Wylan pushes his way through the crowd as the people around him jostle for a spot at the Makker’s Wheel.
{The lonely boy before them} Wylan keeps struggling towards the door
{The boy that is me} With one last push, he reaches the exit and steps out into the damp dark of Ketterdam.
{Piano Outro} He waits for a moment, breathing hard, before he squares his shoulders, turns down the street, and is swept up into the night.

The way Jack sings , the emotions we can feel so strongly and how you see how much he likes singing, the adorable " I enjoyed that " at the end that is so much like him and so genuine. ( Also his Wylan mannerism and how that song just feels so much like Wylan to Inej or Jesper is really cool , I hold the Six Of Crows duology so dearly in my heart I am really happy we got such a perfect person) That man is an angel, he looks/sounds like such a cute, kind and sincere human , oh who can't love that 😌❤

I haven't stopped listening to this song since I found it. I was looking for Jack Wolfe after finding out he can sing on TikTok, and after I heard this specific song, I was completely mesmerized. It's so powerful and relatable, I can't help but feel sad but also feel comfort. You can *hear* the emotion in his voice, I was almost brought to tears the first time I heard it. The piano is so nostalgic somehow, but also slightly creepy, I love everything about this. I really want to see this musical one day, though I can't do it in person. Thank you, Jack Wolfe and Royal Shakespeare Company for making a musical that has this amazing song in it!

I watched the magicians elephant at the RSC a few years ago for my birthday. I was obsessed with Jack from that moment I couldn’t take my eyes off him. When he popped up in shadow and bone I was so excited!! He deserves it so much ❤
