  • Are sheep worth it to raise? What is the time commitment and routine like? If you want to sell meat for profit, would you have a return on investment? What infrastructure do you need to get started raising sheep for meat?
    We bought most of these supplies from FenceFast.ca a small Canadian supplier:
    Gallagher Sheep Netting
    Gallagher post double foot step in multiwire
    Gallagher Standard Economy Grazing Fence Reel
    Gallagher polywire 200m

    You forgot the big one ! Cutting the grass $2000 for ride on plus 1 hour to cut plus $10 gas each time. Sheep seem a great way to go. Happy homesteading.

    Great information thank you guys. Here is one vain question.... Are they as messy as chickens? Do you need to keep your little artists out of the areas were sheep were till the soil had a chance to absorb the "gifts"? Ok two questions ;-)

    • @ODriscolls
      @ODriscolls  Před 2 lety +1

      Their poop isn't as bothersome as chickens but we aren't walking around barefoot 😅😅

    • @ODriscolls
      @ODriscolls  Před 2 lety +1

      Sheep manure is super non-offensive. Kind of like rabbit poop. They don't stay in place long enough for it to pile up or anything.
      Worst case is you get a smelly sneaker coming back to the house now and again

  • @FullonFamilywithoutlimits

    Was really looking forward to this one.
    We always had sheep back in the UK in fact Kristen got two bottle lams for her birthday one year.
    Just wondering if they’re all for meat or you are keeping some for breeding?
    If you keep breeding stock and need help with foot trimming or ‘Dagging out’ (cleaning up their backsides for lambing) give us a shout.
    Ether way looking forward to following your journey.

      We originally planned to breed some but I think we will be processing them all this year. Hoof trimming is something I'd like to learn however. - Dom

    I am happy for the sheep but why no goats this year? And where will the sheep be held in the winter time those sheep you keep? And plans for a different kind of building to house them for the winter?

    • @ODriscolls
      @ODriscolls  Před 2 lety

      Hey Cristina. We decided to try sheep this year instead. If I had my time back I would have mixed in a couple of goats to eat the stuff the sheep don't like.
      Originally I thought I would prefer sheep and my plan was to breed four of them this fall. I cut some poles with which I was going to make a pole barn. However we have decided not to keep any sheep this year so I wont be building the barn. Maybe next year we will try a cow haha.

  • @logibearlifts3454

    Do you butcher the sheep yourself or do you send them off for butchering? If you do send them off how much is it?
    Also you able to sell the wool to get some money back?
    As always love the videos

    • @ODriscolls
      @ODriscolls  Před 2 lety

      Surprisingly, no. But there are predators around. We think maybe the electric perimeter fence has deterred them? Could be luck though! There are bears, coyotes, fox, and raccoons in the area.
